When I go out on the town, I find that I like to keep my pockets light. I’ve already got my keys in one pocket, phone in another, a wallet in one, and a handkerchief in another. Being one to keep things light, a snuff tin of any size added to any of those pockets feels like I’ve got too much. Perhaps some of you have this same quirk… you don’t want your pockets to become too bulked up. Some of the snuffboxes i’ve seen seem a little bulky, and to me they seem like they’re not designed to distribute an easily-controlled pour onto the anatomical snuffbox. So, what else can you use to take your snuff on-the-go? I decided to take a trip down to a local surplus store and check out what sort of bulk containers I could find that would store my snuff to my liking. After about an hour sifting through the different glass vessels, I found that small culture tubes were perfect for my need! The one that really seemed to be perfect was this little glass test-tube that was only 1cm in diameter by 7.5cm long. The cork adds .5cm to the length. The compact size ensures that I can put it in my pocket and not feel it’s even there. It’s shatter and heat resistant, do that means it’s going to be durable. The simple cork keeps the tube air-tight. Plus the length enables me to exert precise control when tapping the snuff out. To get the snuff in easily, I also bought a tiny funnel. Overall, the whole purchase set me back a whopping .95 of a dollar. Guess I’ll have to wait until my next paycheck for those gumballs. What does everyone else use when they just need to bring along a tiny bit?
I like the luxury of a good box or bottle and I do have a few bone snuff bottles that can be worn as pendants around the neck. I have considered a belt pouch for holding snuff boxes in. but I really don’t feel the need to travel “light”. Cargo pants might help your situation. Your idea is good but it could get you into trouble with the cops if you know what I mean.
Most of my snuffs are pinchable, so the normal snuffbox suits me. If I carry a German snuff, the Bernard Minifranzl bottle is with me. Genrally I only pour out German ones. Its small, and although stone, its not heavy. +1 on cargo shorts. I never seem to have enough pockets.
if i am out … i have a little snap pouch holder … and i put in 2 or 3 different snuff rockets … or just carry a single triple tech box. about a zippo size profile. also, i have a few flat heartwood boxes that i don’t use so much anymore … but their slim lines and flat profile make it about the size of a regular bic lighter
Since my colection started to grow, my pockets started to fill. I adopted a mil-issue grenade pouch which i wear on my belt. Cost a buck. I now carry three to four varities at most times(i like to have a least one clearly marked “nasal snuff’”) as well as my multi-tool, lighter and chapstick. I can really only handle one or two things in my pockets at a time as well.
I am with Juxtaposer: I just like the style of a snuffbox. It’s some kind of luxury feeling pleasure.
I wear a fanny pack. That way I can carry my snus and a few bullets or tins of snuff.
If I have more than my wallet hankie and one tin of snuff I just put my tin in my shirt pocket. If I have any more than that I bring a backpack. Just because I cant stand having pockets all full. And I have one of those tubes too! Its an old sprinkles container and all plastic.
Lovely title for a thread; like something out of Jane Austen!
Since the time I became a snuff taker, I do not have to carry cigarettes with me no more. Because of that it’s no problem to have my snuff with me.
when I was quickly scaning the post titles I thought this said probability not portability.
Indeed sir, may I venture to opine that portability is so a la mode in connection to ones insufflatory equipage. Or something.
My little flask-tube has been my favorite way of keeping snuff fresh and easily portable. I end up holding it like a cigarette while i’m out with other cigarette smokers, except I don’t blend in quite as well with my hand up to my nose and sniff the Spanish Gem inside. It seems like a decent amount of people in this thread carry an actual snuffbox. I would have gone out and bought one already because I understand and like that luxury, but I haven’t particularly cared for any snuffbox design i’ve seen thus far. That’s why I ultimately went out to search for snuffbox alternatives. And, I’m sorry to say, I will not be wearing a fanny pack anytime soon while i’m hitting up the local bars and talkin’ to them fine ladies out there. Same reason i’m not rocking out with the cargo pants.
LOL @Niedziejkore I hear that! A Fanny Pack would get me slapped where I’m from But I WOULD carry a nice snuffbox in my pocket- and I do! Keep looking. There’s some nice silver ones out there. The Purist in me is looking for a slim, smooth and plain one. I have a couple tripletechs- you should check them out they’re neat! I think Snuffgear carries them… you might be interested in the snuff flask from Toque…
FAO Yanks: if you’re ever in the UK call it a bum bag. Fanny here is slang for vagina. Could get you some funny looks lol. Stefan
Hey I get a lot of compliments on my fanny pack. Like I said though, it makes a nice container from snus/snuff. I’m 24 so I go out too. Walrus1985: My occupational therapist is from South Africa and I almost left it there one day. She noticed and yelled for me as I was walking out. I couldn’t hear what she called it, but I’m assuming it must have been ‘bum bag.’ I just know she didn’t use ‘fanny pack.’
I occasionally wear a fanny pack. They are considered passe fashion-wise here. I don’t mind the social judgement because very few people realize I’m actually wearing a quick-draw, Safariland gun holster with a concealed 9mm inside. It looks just like a black fanny pack. It sure came in handy one night when a car full of hooligans tried to rob me and my wife in a dark parking lot. Thank God no one got shot but I was glad I wore my fanny pack that evening. They never saw it coming but they were in a mighty big hurry when they left.
@Spyro, I think more people than you might realise know that fanny pack = CCW. But that is a conversation for a whole other forum I carry my snuff in a bullet and/or a 10g toque tin. If I am loading up, it all get spread around in coat pockets. I used to have a coin purse type thing that carried a tin or two and a Schnifter snorter, but I left it behind somewhere. The bullets slide nicely in to my coin pocket on my jeans. At work, refills go in my briefcase.
I don’t like having bulging pockets. I usually wear cargo pants or carpenter jeans. In standard cargo pants, here’s the check I make before leaving the house: Back right-wallet Back left-handkerchief Right cargo-gum, work keys (for tills/safe/etc…I work in a retail accounting position), spare change Left cargo-cell phone, name tag Right hip-personal keys Left hip-SNUFF!!! The snuff is either in a bullet or a sealed tin (right now a Kendal Mint Snuff tap box type deal). When I’m not going to work, the rotation changes, but is mostly the same. I generally like my pockets light, too, so only a couple things go in each one. As for the ladies, I’m married, so that’s none of my concern.
spyro I don’t know if its the concealed weapon they were afraid of, it might have been the fire breath
