Just curious. Does it have a serious following? Tom NicotineRush.com
havnt had the opportunity to try any ive seen it though and it does get my curiosity its not snuff is it?
I bought a couple packs about 6 months ago and I haven’t come close to finishing either of them. The don’t do anything for me as far as nicotine and the juice kinda burns the back of my throat. Johndeere - naa its not snuff. they are tightly rolled up bits of tobacco that you nibble on.
I got some of the tropical flavor recently. I prefer it to chewing/oral tobacco, it’s more discrete, and you don’t have to spit. The only snus I’ve tried is camel spice snus, and the oliver twist is better than that in my opinion. I’d like to give the other flavors a try, but haven’t been able to find them.
I do use from time to time, not exactly devoted to them but they are good. The Senior has a nice strong tobacco flavor. Sunberry & citrus are pretty good as well.
Best I could sell it for would be 5.25. Stuffs not cheap! Anybody know what the shelf life is? Tom
Tom - the bits are vac sealed in a little bag inside the box. I’d guess the shelf life is at least a couple of years, maybe longer. I don’t think I’d buy them. I found a really small piece of Cotton Boll lasts a long time and doesn’t cause spitting. Also makes a very stout snuff, for those hobbyists out there. I wouldn’t mind trying some other twists, but most internet sellers only offer boxes of 12. Maybe you could offer one or two brands of USA tobacco twists?
stich, thanks for the response. Give me some brand names as I’m unfamiliar with twists. I’ve seen them advertised but wouldn’t know where to start. As for making snuff, I’m just getting into that now. Tom
I’m not familiar with a lot of them. There are people on the board who have more experience with twist than me, for sure. I’ve only tried Cotton Boll, and a three twist sampler from stokers. I liked their sweet air cured for chew best. The dark fire cured was pretty harsh. The air cured plain made a good snuff, that will make your head spin. Cotton Boll has a good flavor, and a nice red leaf color. Here’s a link to a place that only sell boxes, but they have a good variety of brands: http://www.riverfrontgifts.com/StoreDetails.aspx/Tobacco/TwistTobacco/opt/store/16/category/371 Hope that is helpful.
The oliver twist has a freshness date on the back. Not to say they arent useable beyond the date but its something to consider if you are thinking about selling them.
I use Oliver Twist when I’m in the mood. I go through a packet every two months or so. Like I say not something I do everyday but it is something I like. Stefan
how do you use this stuff - i ordered some apple twist/pig tail from snuff store, from the picture i looks like it comes in one long section, how much do i cut off to use at a time, also where do i put it in my mouth and for how long, do i chew it suck it, spit or swallow the juice - sorry for all the question but a bit green when it comes to mouth tobacco as its not common in the UK.
thanks for the reply and advice lxskllr - my order arrived this morning, the twist / pigtail wasn’t what i was expecting its very thick the whole thing is probably only about an inch long. i cut a small bit of and stuck it between my lip and gum but only lasted about 2 minutes in there though as my throat started to burn or something? so i had to spit it out - on first impressions im not to keep but will give it another go maybe i’ll come round to it.
did you spit? seems like swallowing twist juice would be a little rough. (i think i understand that oliver twist is alot different from a actual twist pig tail type tobacco)
Hay, Stu90 I like G&H black Irish X better. I cut it into dime (1/16in., 2mm) size slices with a cigar cutter. Chew 1 or 2 a little then tuck it in the lip and spit as needed. They have several other flavors. Hope this helps.
There’s no real need to spit with these twists as they don’t create much juice. Its really up to you. They are made to be a discreet tobacco that you can use anywhere like the office, church, airplanes, court etc. So no spitting is required.
Pig tail was used by the old miners where I grew up in the North of England. They would chew it when they were down the hole and chop it up and put it in their pipes above ground. You just slice a bit off or bite a piece off. Never tried Oliver Twist but it sounds along the same lines. Gallaghers was the make, who also did a fine Irish snuff I’ve not seen in years.
I was first introduced to chewing baccy when i worked in the coal mines. The only type available in the pit canteen was “Condor pigtail” which i believe was produced by Gallaghers, In later days they dropped the pigtail format and made it in solid rectangular blocks. When i was an apprentice i can always remember almost passing out when i tried my first chew, the nicotine rush is incredible. It put me off chewing for a while but i ended up using it regularly, just don’t forget not to swollow the juice!.
Yep, that was strong stuff. I used to drink with the miners as most of the pubs with snooker tables were miners clubs, I remember my head being blown off by a mouthful of condor much to the amusement of the octagenarian that gave it to me!
Had a couple more goes with the pig tail - spitting the juice helped some what but im still not to keep & the apple flavour is almost non existent to boot.
@Hydrahead - the days of work plug tobacco is excellent. I seldom use chewing tobacco anymore, but when I do it’s that or Redman Golden Blend. Yummy Yummy
Red man original for me, or cope. A great change now and then.
@ Snuffster - Have you tried the Redman Select? I can’t get it locally, but have recently found it online. I think I may have to give it a try.
i was at first gonna comment that i did not care for the days o work tobacco but dug it out of my small collection and reviseted it, i dont know if its because of how im storing it (in my makeshift tuperware humidor with moist papertowel for humidity) or just taste acclimation but it seems much better now with a sweet flavor i wanna say molases which is probably what it is but theres another flavor in there too it seems.
All this talk of Redman, Days o Work, and Levi Garrett gives me an idea. I wonder how it would taste to dry some Redman out in the oven, and grind it up into snuff? I think I might give it a try when I get home tonight.
Leman, not tried the select, I’ve only ever used the original but I will get round to trying their newer blends. My thoughts on it as a basis for a snuff would be its sounds completely viable. I know people have made snuff out of rolling tobacco and the like with some success, maybe worth a try. One thing I can tell you with certainty though is that Grizzly makes a dreadful cigarette. My wife and her friend came in the other night after a Christmas get together having sunk quite a few wines. Her friend ran out of cigs and was so desperate she got me to roll a cig using Grizzly that I microwaved to make it dry enough to light. That was one hellish smoke I can tell you!! The sort of dumb thing you do when you are about 18…
It works, scotty. Trout made up some snuff from Stokers Butternut. Very delicious as a dip or a snuff. Wouldn’t burn it though. On another forum I heard of po’ folk drying out their used chew and smoking it as pipe tobacco. I had to try this it’s surprisingly good, in a plain tobacco way. I smoked it in a corn-cob, of course.
Interesting.
Global change is a natural part of the earths cycle. Nothing you can do about it anyway.
There has been many global cooling & warming periods during the earths history. Glaciers have come and gone, the ocean has risen and receded many times. They are acting like this is something new. Its just a way for scientist to get funding by saying man is to blame. Who’s to say the earth isn’t supposed to be 5 degrees warmer than it is now. Back in the days that dinosaurs roamed around, the earth was a lot warmer than it currently is. Volcano’s & wildfires pump more crap into the atmosphere than man ever could. All the money in the world can’t stop the earth from doing what it wants to do.
Completely right Trout, Global Warning is the latest fad that is now so entrenched nothing will change the view for years. Having read a lot of history, it reminds me of the medical view of disease in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Despite growing evidence from enlightened thinkers, the great European Universities would not deviate from the view that sickness was caused by an inbalance of bodily humours. All nonsense, but the vested interest was in the established view. I have heard academics say that nothing will be funded easily at a high level unless it relates to GW.
Although alot does have to do with the earths natural rythyms there is no denying the fact that humans have brought umpeen millions of tons of carbon back into the enviroment over the coarse of a couple of hundred years that the earth spent millions of years trapping beneath the surface but one could also disagree as to whether thats a bad thing or not if you really think about it what is fossil fuel? … extremely aged and compressed liquid (or solid if were talking coal) compost.
Its only been the past 100 years that crap has been pumped into the atmosphere or taken from in the earth at any recordable amounts with only a few scattered cities across the world contributing to this. Its only the past 50 years that it has been wide spread. 100 years ago, the western US was barely populated. Thats not enough to make a difference. You add it all up and its still less that 1 big volcanic eruption or big wildfire. The earth hasn’t even warmed in over 10 years but they don’t tell you that. The Arctic sea ice is actually growing more than it previously was. The past 2 winters we have set a lot of cold records & the past 2 summers have been very mild. You don’t set cold records if the earth is getting hotter. But of course if the earth starts to cool back down naturally, you know Al Gore will take the credit.
Not at any recordable sizable amount is what I was getting at. Back in the 18th & 19th century your talking only a few tiny specs in a few select cities in ratio to the whole world.
“In any case, climate change is the least of our problems. Dead zones in eco systems, vanishing species, and over population by humans. Not to mention a thin ozone layer. This planets going to shit, and it’s 100% human’s fault.” Thats basically how i feel as well. don’t get me wrong though i love hunting, fishing, farming, making money, using my natural resources, etc. its just when the wrong people get in control and have no regard for the environment where they do whatever “buisiness” theyre doing things get destroyed that can never be fixed/replaced/restored however you want to say it. dont mean to rant about this but i wish i was born at least a hundred years ago so i could have enjoyed some nature how it was originally meant to be enjoyed. Ofcourse i would miss my computer and all the nice new snuff flavors, oh and probably my truck but thats besides the point lol.
The problem with climate change isn’t that is happening it’s always happened and always will happen. The probelm is said to be the speed of which it is happening which doesn’t allow for the same adjustments. Well I think live is tenacious and will go on. I do think though that humans are going to like the world they create. Oh well humans are far from my favorite animal.
While there have been cyclical climate changes throughout the earth’s history, some facts are different today in that ice core samples show an unprecedented trend - acceleration of climate warming since the dawn of the industrial revolution and wide adoption of coal. Like it or not, believe it or not we are living on borrowed time. Forests are shrinking, deserts growing, coral reefs dying world wide. Acid rain is killing the lakes and trees. Unprecedented loss of biodiversity. These are major problems and could be a precursor of much worse things to come. How much worse? Look at Mars. Ranting about Obama or Al Gore won’t make it go away. The problem, in my humble opinion, is we have a culture based on growth. Growth of wealth, population, production, consumption - all with scant regard for how this may play out in a world of finite proportions. Eventually even an idiot can see you end up dividing the pie into thinner and thinner slices. That is why it now takes two breadwinners to raise a family, not one. This is not sustainable, because growth in not infinitely sustainable in finite systems. We are approaching at a tipping point, and hopefully we can make the necessary adjustments before we all drown in our own swill.
What stitch said, i couldn’t have said it better.
I always liked Day’s Work, and have been using it for decades. I always pick some up but rarely use it anymore just because I’m not comfortable marinating my teefs in molasses nowadays. I like the OT’s too but only use the ‘Original’. The flavored ones just don’t seem to satisfy nearly as much, and the molasses thing there too (not that the Original is much better I’d guess). I keep forgetting to add those rope twists when I do my LBSS order, they sound multi-purpose and quite tasty too. As far as the rest of this crap, I’m with you guys, damn blasted mankind…they’re simply ruining it for the rest of us! Just kidding, I recycle too… well, I been meaning to anyhow.
If you want a non-sugary OT, go with the Senior.
Thanks TS, I’m not sure I’ve seen the Seniors before and figured the Original was the least sugary. While it’s nothing like the fruity ones, I’m sure it has it’s share of sugar in there. Too bad as I have about 10 of em left! I did have an OT about a dozen years ago that seemed to have about double the vitamin N in comparison, maybe that was the Senior? They would actually burn a little hole in my cheek, a la Cope, if I happened to doze while bittin’…
Just for kicks, I got some of this in stock. 6 different flavors. Original - Genuine English liquorice Wintergreen - Light tobacco with a traditional wintergreen Sunberry - Light tobacco. Sweet Black Currant fruit flavor. Citrus - Light tobacco with a taste of lemon. Mint - Light tobacco with a peppermint flavor. Tropical - Light tobacco with a taste of anise. Tom
AWESOME! I enjoy this quite a bit. The Sunberry is my favorite, but I want to try them all. You da man, Tom.
I have tried the Oliver Twist Original this week and am pleasantly suprised. I have never put tobacco in my mouth before, but these little pellets of tobacco leaf are discreet and taste very good. Quite sweet liquorice and tobacco. No irritation or problems, no need to spit. Quite expensive I suppose and not the nicotine hit you get with snuff, but each portion lasts for over an hour. Worth a try, especially when you feel taking snuff is not appropriate, like when I’m sitting at the high table at a wedding reception during the speeches!
sandy, glad you got to try the Oliver Twist. Haven’t yet tried them myself. I do have to disagree on the expense though. I think there are about 30 portions in a pack. That works out to sixteen cents a portion. Not bad for an hours worth of enjoyment. Tom
I got my first pack from Tom last week. It is vary deferent from Grizzly or cope that I am used to dipping. I have been using 3 or 4 at a time to get much taste. I do like it. I got the sunberry. I think for the money I will stick with G&H ropes for chewing. I will probably get some of this from time to time for a treat.
yes ive had my first try of it today i just bought a tin of tropical and a tin of the mint, its not bad, i put it in my lip and gum, it was all right, a bit too sweet, it was the tropical one, i just felt a bit chilled out with it, im not a big nicotine intaker but as i drive a sewage tanker, im a bit dubious as to keep putting my fingers into my nostrils too much at work even though i wear industrial gloves, so i thought it would be a good idea for me to try the alternative while at work, i have the odd cigar while travelling along the M2 in the truck too, it keeps me from dropping off at the wheel more than anything else. im hoping that the oliver twist can keep me a bit alert like snuff does too, well at least help me just get on with my daily routine. when i put this in my gum it didnt really work till at least ten minutes or so, i had a bit of saliva build up with the very sweet aniseed flavour which was a little overpowering but i either spat it out or swallowed it, over all though not a bad experience, i quite like it.
I tried it once. Not enough bang for my buck. Although the original does have a nice flavor.
Yeah, Oliver Twists are quite weak, pig tails are much better.
