Old snuff question

L

I was reading an article about how some divers found some 200 year old beer and champagne in the wreck of a schooner and the stuff was actually still good. So, has anyone ever heard of snuff being preserved for that long sealed in a bottle or wooden cask? That would be fascinating to try some 200 year old snuff.

I imagine if stored properly snuff that old would be fine. Depending on the type it may even aged to be better than when milled.

I snorted some dug up in a basement of a house that was over 100 years old. The snuff may not have been that old, but its highly possible around here.  It wasnt horrible. I remember thinking it had no flavor or nicotine.  I dont remember the brand it was something I had, or have never seen before.

Virginia tobacco ages well, burley not very well. Plain snuffs made from VA would probably do fine but I think snuff that old would be far past its prime. Scented snuffs go off a lot faster. Plain snuffs do better as long as kept dry.

Sometimes you can find old bottles of Levi Garrett or bottles of Macoboy and glass jars of scotches with the tax stamp in place on ebay. I had some 65 year old Levi Garrett it packed a punch and still resembled a rappee . I have no idea what it was like new… The bottle of Macoboy smelled of old socks must had been stored improperly. forget about anything in a tin it usually rusts and picks up the rust scent and if the package was made of cardboard  you’re also out of luck it resembling the original product

I recently bought a very old tin of Lorrillard’s sweet snuff from someone on eBay. I could tell from the photos that it wasn’t rusted at all, and was sealed. No tobacco warnings or bar codes, perhaps it was from the 1960s, I’m not sure. But, upon opening, it was pale brown, very dry and fine. Upon sniffing a bit I discovered it was perfect! No musty smell, no iron oxide-rust taste. The same story for a box of Bruton Scotch. Very old, but in good shape, and actually a very nice snuff. Like @basement_shaman said, if the label is intact, cork still in place, etc, it’ll likely still be good. I can’t imagine an old barrel would be good. But you never know.

Have two full un opened 1.15 oz. Bottles of RR Mills Maccoby that have been in box from old estate sale. Keepsake or may open.?.?. My opinion is it may be like a wild mushroom that has not been eaten. Also have a jar of Laolards… :-&
