Pure Maple Snuff Yep it’s really good. Not too heavy on the maple scenting, just right. Typical Old Mill grind. Easy to pinch or spoon in but one interesting aspect: when spooning or especially pinching you can hear and feel, a crystalline “crunch”. It’s pretty cool , but the snuff is completely smooth in the Nose. A little nutty, perfectly mapley, and the tobacco is well cured ( correct term?) and smooth. I just got this and in 15 done three rounds of the nostrils. It’s yummy but you won’t get sick of the flavor. Chef Daniel just keeps cranking out the Hits.
I got some last month but haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. Did you get Chef Daniel’s email about how he doesn’t have a heck of a lot due to dropping 3lbs of it in a glass jar?
@larry_90066, yes I saw that. pretty sad, as it’s really good. I almost ordered a jar but wan’t sure how the maple was going to be- so I got a large tin…wish I had gotten the jar and the large tin
I got a jar and a small tin. I’m planning on sampling from the small tin and saving the jar.
@larry_90066, that’s usually what I do but didn’t this time…I like the idea of saving big jars of Old Mill. One day you’ll be able to look back and sample from them and it will be sooooo good!
Enjoying some of this at the moment.
It’s incredibly smooth and balanced. On the crunch - I got some large tins, and they all had a bit of wood in the bottom. Sarsaparilla - cherry (I think), Solstice 15 - alder, and this - maple.
on decanting, the other two snuffs fell away easily from the wood (a small square of thin planed veneer). The Sugarbush snuff wood had a bit of a crust on it. I use a funky spoon to transfer snuffs and it took a bit of pressure (minimal, but it took some effort) to scrape off the snuff.
I’m wondering if the maple sugar is causing a bit of that crunch? It’s a bit wetter/stickier than muscovado, for example.
@DireWolf, I think it might be the maple sugar crystals. I like it. It definitely melts into invisibility in the nose. I haven’t noticed any wood in my tin, although I haven’t decanted it yet. It’s an outstanding Snuff!
I’ve been bumping it all day - along with some Viking dark (not a bad combo). Poking the tin bottom with my spoon, I hear a bit of a crunch…
Fantastic stuff with a great, long lasting scent, decent bit of burn (more of a warming, maybe), and it behaves well. Seems to settle into the right spot pretty easily for me.
@DireWolf The snuff and the wood are both high in maple sugar, so some crystallization is bound to happen, but it’s all good, and it is fun to feel the crystals melt away.
@jmahes The wood in the tins was a first, and last, time experiment. It works great in the jars, but I’m not happy with the results in the tins. Of course if you request it I will happily do it for you all otherwise I think it best if the tins go commando.
Merry Christmas
@chefdaniel, I like the crystallization. It’s interesting and fun in a tactile way ( since I pinch the snuff, I can feel it crunch ).
Later tonite, i’ll dig into the tin to see the wood-didn’t notice it. Since I can’t get a jar until the future I’ve been careful not to go too crazy snuffing this one ( even though I really want to! )
Merry Christmas to you too
@DireWolf Well, 'tis the season, right? I did keep a small amber jar for my personal stash, lined with maple, and I’m finding the same texture that you nice folks have. It’s kind of a soft, sandy feel in the pinch, but once planted in the nose it melts away nicely. It seems to release the maple and walnuts first, then settles into a nice, smooth buttery maple with the good tobacco coming through. IMHO, it’s more about the tobacco than the scent, so I like to find that balance point so all the players get a shot at the spotlight.
Sugarbush V 2.0 is down for a nice long rest and should be ready Feb/Mar.
Merry Christmas!!
Sugarbush V 2.0 is showing progress that V 1.0 didn’t. Maybe it’s the warm weather, or my positive thoughts, but the leaf is showing a very high concentration of the flavor system quite unlike the first go around. It might be attributed to the higher proof of the rum over the Canadian whisky or the phase of the moon. Damned if I know. It’s looking good. Caveat; this is not the same snuff as the first go around. It’s still looking good.
Next up is the drying and buttering phase and then into the mill. Stay tuned.
Arabesque goes into the mill on Monday, and is showing some very exotic promise.
Merry Christmas
This sounds awesome. I am looking forward to the release!
I’m ready for the new upcoming offerings chef especially arabesque. Sugarbush is another awesome snuff!
I have them all in baby food jars and Amber jars and the baby food jars are keeping them all fresh so far no problems I always use a snuff spoon to remove snuff I’m very careful and have good snuff hygiene so I don’t contaminate snuffs and get mold that’s my biggest fears I own more artisan snuffs more than any others
