I have lately been enjoying one of @chefdaniel’s latest creations for the last few days. It is called Solstice. I swear it smells, out of the tin, like oatmeal raisin cookies (my favorite type of cookie). It is very smooth, with a medium grind and full of “flavor” and there is ever so much going on with this snuff! I detect fruits, vanilla, caramel, and bakery-type sweet and exotic spices. Good nic hit as well. Solstice is a wonderful snuff and I highly recommend it. Chef Daniel has hit another home run and I am a big fan. Having now tried 35 of Daniel’s snuffs (that’s all of them I think), I believe that he is one of the very best snuff makers in the world.
Winter Solstice. December 21, 2014
The one thing I’ve definitely noticed with Old Mill Snuffs is that the scents tend to last longer than other snuffs. Olde English Toast is one of my favorites for this reason. I haven’t tried Solstice, but it sounds like another winner.
Not putting any Solstice 2014 in my nose until Dec. 21st. Just wouldn’t be right. It smells great from the tin though.

I think for it to work properly… you need to have emptied a tin prior to the 21st with the last take at the stroke of midnight on the 20th, but I’m not sure? I think only @chefdaniel knows how the whole existential magic thing works with his seasonal offerings. I’ve also heard that it works right if an entire large tin is taken on the winter solstice, but that it elicits a slightly different response in the user? ~:>
@Kentuckysnuff Patience, Grasshopper. I think you’re going to enjoy this one. I like @fredh’s comparison to raisin cookies…maybe being molested by the gingerbread man, smeared with black treacle and up to his eyeballs in rum. YEEHAW
@chefdaniel You’ll know my impressions of it on that day, before anyone else. I am reviewing each snuff you sent me on a day-to-day basis. One a day. I’ve done Yvette but haven’t uploaded it yet.
I’m working on Winter Solstice 2015 right now. I got a free 6’ Colorado Blue Spruce that was grown in Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. I trimmed the bottom boughs, letting them wilt somewhat and will pack them in a cedar crate “sandwiched” between whole leaf TN-90 Burley, Piedmont VA Red Virginia and a smidgen of Kentucky Dark Fired. Let that do its thing until whenever, then see and smell what happens. I hope it doesn’t suck.

Great review. Having tried all of them I’m curious of more of your impressions as a whole. What are your top favorites of old mill and why?

My favorite Old Mill snuffs are the following. Each gets a 5 out of 5 rating (Solstice rates a 4.75 btw). The best (to me) are listed below in no particular order: Edible Arrangement Cafe Brulot (the best coffee snuff in the world after Cafe 11 and I have tried them all) Calypso Melba Toast Butternut Toast Noisette Cuba Libre But my all time favorite Old Mill is Melba Toast and one of my all time favorites of any brand anywhere. It is a completely smooth, no burn, highly complex, medium to fine grind snuff that is effortless to take by pinch or by boxcar. It has hints of peaches, spiced wine, raspberries, vanilla, nutmeg, honey, roasted marshmallows, and fruit infused freshly baked muffins. It is not cloying in the slightest and has good staying power in the nose. The beautiful base tobacco complements and intermingles with all of the above flavors and the entire presentation is a harmonious gestalt wherein the overall effect is greater than the sum of its parts. This is the kind of snuff that makes me feel deep gratitude for having been fortunate, or blessed, to have snuff as a part of my life. If I have treats like Melba Toast, it makes having treats in food form almost unnecessary. I say with no exaggeration that this is a world class snuff made by a world class snuff maker, in @chefdaniel. So that is how I see it, Captain, Sir. You asked and there it is. Melba Toast is my favorite Old Mill snuff, for today. Tomorrow? Who knows? See the list above.
@fredh Thank you. BTW: Winter Solstice, 5:03 PM Central Standard Time (USA). Set your alarms accordingly. I know what’s going to be in my nose
It’s in my nose and it’s superb! It’s the best winter seasonal offering out there, but is so good, and complex; that it will be in my nose regardless of the season. The layers of scent are gifts that keep on giving, and @fredh does a nice job describing them. I kind of feel like caroling? I agree, 5 Stars!
I had a take today while out running some errands. I picked up on a cedar, lemon and orange zest scent that developed after the oatmeal raisin cookie scent. It was nice and lasted a while with the cool breeze blowing in the windows. I have no idea if cedar or citrus fruit zests were used in it? I suppose I could have been imagining it?
@Jim Nope. Not your imagination.
Just had a pinch (or eight) and it was superb! Thank you @chefdaniel for using snuff to not only satisfy my nose, but my inner Christmas cheer! This is @#%!ing great!
I just got a box of snuffs from Chef Daniel at the Olde Mill and Solstice was the first one I tried. It really is an impressive snuff. Very rich and flavorful and it captures the essence of this special time of year. This is a very grand snuff and I hope Chef Daniel will continue to brew up many more of these wonderful snuffs.
