Old Mill Snuffs: A Commentary

I have now tried the following Old Mill Snuffs by our own Chef Daniel. The snuffs I have tried are listed below in no particular order… Evangeline Olde English Toast Pure Virginia Toast Conundrum Cafe Brulot Fleur de Cafe Atchafalaya Premiere Acadia Butternut Toast Having tried all of these snuffs, I can honestly say that these are quite simply World Class snuffs. They are balanced, harmonious, and rich in flavor, nuance, and vitamin N. I do not have the time to review them all but I cannot go on using them without commenting on them. Although I am not nearly as experienced with snuff as many of our Snuffhouse members are, I have now tried over 250 individual snuffs, according to my records. I first started using snuff approximately 35 years ago and have been a mostly occasional user since, but more intensely in the past 15 months. Some of Daniel’s snuffs are extraordinarily complex while others are of great depth. Still others are simply rich and full. And Daniel is very aware of the importance of the nic effect and makes sure that ample nic is present in each of his snuffs. In my own way of rating snuffs I use the old reliable 5-point scale. None of the Old Mill snuffs have gotten a rating from me at less than 4 and there are quite a few at 4.5, and some 5s in the bunch as well. And I am not a generous rater. It seems to me that Daniel feels as comfortable with snuff blending as a soaring hawk feels comfortable with wind currents. He sure did take to it quickly and seemingly effortlessly. His snuffs are creative, unique, innovative, and satisfying. His ingredients are natural and wide ranging. And he is just getting started! Soon we will have his products in bottles and tins. It is my opinion (and nothing more) that we now have a major snuff maker in the person of Chef Daniel. In fact, as far as I am concerned, Old Mill is already in my top four favorite brands. And if Daniel’s skills and ideas continue to grow and develop, he could eventually be in my top three quite easily. And no, Chef Daniel did not pay me to post this. I have either bought, or traded, lots of snuffs for all the Old Mill snuffs that I have tried. This is all just my opinion of course, and therefore not worth much in that sense. But having shared mine, I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on Old Mill Snuffs in general, if you are willing to comment of course. Thanks.

Yea! What is the website?

Yes: No discredit to @chefdaniel but it’s about time that he got a retail outlet sorted for these snuffs; whether that’s via @MrSnuff or @Snuffstore or his own website.

First, thank you @fredh‌ Secondly, a website or other retail venue gets the attention of some very unsavory folks; the IRS, BATF and too many other entities in Regulation Nation to mention. The net result would be higher costs (if that were possible), more hassles, wealthier attorneys (if that were possible) and the potential for me to lose sight of the personal nature of this endeavor. Maybe someday, but for now I prefer to keep it small, personal and right here. I certainly appreciate the concerns expressed by those searching for a website, and it’s not my intention to make things more difficult. It’s just that I’d rather keep this among friends, and that group is right here. Who knows what the future holds? My crystal ball is cloudy, so now I’m stuck with an old 8 Ball, and it has too many moving parts. I considered a Ouija Board, but that takes a small crowd to operate and the only crowd around the Old Mill are furry beasts that walk on all fours and have no opposable thumbs. Somedays that includes me in that category. Thank you again for the support, valuable feedback and interest. Stay tuned to the September update, available by emailing oldmillsnuff@gmail.com Cheers

How about a review from someone who has not had even a pinch - but already considers themselves a huge fan? I do not think it is telling tales out of school to relates the following anecdote. Yesterday I had several exchanges via email with chefdaniel in regards to many facets of this endeavor. I found him to be polite, informative, knowledgeable - but most all others things - passionate. Therein lies the key I think. These days we seem in many ways to lose sight of passion - we are so busy and committed that even in hobbies we can get a touch jaded or . perhaps more fairly, distracted by other things to the point we cannot fully enjoy the moment. There is a moment of Zen in everything we do - if we find it. Over the course of a few hours, I had that moment of Zen - i was discussing a new interest to me with someone who was passionate enough about it to answer every question, make suggestions, and devote his time to my time. After that, I ( voluntarily with no sales pressure )committed to make a pretty decent trial package - because I could tell just by the words on a screen that what it ultimately would lead to was a nice bespoke product that would have to be top notch. To expand - I homebrew, and I go to a lot of local breweries - i am lucky to be in an area where brewing has exploded - but all too often you find guys who push a product out the door too young or not perfect - in an effort to recoup cost / gain margin. I could tell that there is no way this would be the case with Old Mill / chefdaniel - rather that nothing will leave his hands until he deems it “Perfect” - not simply “Good enough”. -The HP

I TOTALLY agree with @fredh as well as with @The_HP. @chefdaniel is a creative spirit whose skills are only just beginning to become known (at least in our small snuff world). I find his snuffs to be totally unique. They are well balanced with no single overbearing aroma, but if you sit back you will notice a symphony of goodness. The flavors are also of the type that tug at my soul. By that I mean that they often trigger memories and make me think of many things, a walk through the woods, a stroll near the farmers market or memories of my Grandmothers garden. And they elicit visual thoughts as well. And to think that he basically does this in his kitchen with pretty basic equipment. Just imagine what he could do with ‘proper’ tools… Well, I for one am practically quivery with excitement to see what is just around the corner from this master 'snuff chef".

I am excitedly waiting for the snuffs… @chefdaniel‌ has been in constant contact and I have quite the selection coming. WIll post up a “box opening” when they arrive.

OH. My. I received : Mississippi Mud Southern Comfort Old English Toast Premiere Toast and Jelly Butternut Toast Evangeline Pure Virginia Toast Fleur de Cafe Acadia OK, let’s set some background and then we can move forward. As of this posting I have only been around here for 2 weeks or so. I am very new to snuff, and had up till today only had at hand an assortment of Scotch and Sweet Scotch snuffs; all of the bone dry as heck super talc fine slightest sniff and they are in your throat category. I have been amazing intrigued by what I have read here and decided to branch out and order some stuff from Mr Snuff ( 2 orders actually - more American Scotches, and 2 bundles of European snuffs ) , as well as entering into a few purchases from members here . SO - I was excited when I got to the house this afternoon and one of my packages had arrived - it was the Old Mill package. I opened the box and i it were 10 well packed tins, neatly bubble wrapped. With hands shaking from excitement I pawed through them until I found the “Southern Comfort” - I wanted something different than my last ten days and I remembered the alternate name of “Uber Mint”. Holy mackerel I was not prepared for what happened next. Taking ( for me ) a generous knife bump to a boxcar, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and then sharply pulled the snuff into my curious proboscis - and BAM! It was like Wrigley’s - but real Wrigley’s, like you used to get as a kid - filled my entire head. My nose began to run ( well, i think it is salivate ) and though I schnuffled like a stock broker in the 80’s for 3 minutes I keep thinking in wonderment to myself " How have I not known about this for my first 39 years?" Long story short - I am not a refined gentleman, so I do not possess the vocabulary to review snuff in an arid and lofty manner - but I do know when I like something - and I am pretty damned excited that i have 9 more of these little tins to try for the first time - and pretty much expect each one to be just as fun . - The HP

@The_HP‌ take a big bump of that Butternut Toast. Like a pinch from heaven’s snuff box.

I plan to hit some of that one tomorrow . I did get a teaser taste of the Fluer de Cafe, but will get a good snooker full tomorrow and relay my opinion here .

Hows the Evangaline and toast and jelly? Thinking of trying those myself!

Both of those I have given only a quick “open and sniff” at this point . Let’s get dirty for a minute and play in the mud - Mississippi Mud. The minty-ness here is different, and more subdued than the Southern Comfort ( which btw i saw has finished for this season - so I count myself lucky to have gotten some when I did ) . The Mississippi Mud has a nice vibe to it that I have a hard time articulating - think “fall break” when you were younger - crisp, but not cold, the air is heavy but clear - kind of like how good water tastes great - but water is flavorless . In that vein, Mississippi Mud is far form flavorless - rather is very nice and solid - i just have difficulty pinpoint it as it is more a " feels like" than a tastes like . I rather enjoy it. I took the tin to work yesterday with the intent of it being something to break up the daily doses of Tube Rose and Honey Bee - and it ended up being the main snuff of the day.

Dunno about toast and jelly, but Evangeline is great. I might just take a morning pinch of that instead of butternut toast

2nd post here. I’m fairly new to snuff and favor American Scotches. I contacted the Chef recently about trying some of his snuffs. He suggested I try his Toasts. Pure Va, Olde English, Butternut and Toast and Jelly. I bought the first three and he sampled me on the Jelly (Thanks). They are incredible. After spending a few days with these I’m thinking that this is how snuff was meant to be. The flavors are excellent and very long lasting. I’m definately going to be checking out his other offerings.

50/50 mix of WoS dynamite and Dholakia swiss chocolate, this is in the wrong thread, my apologies. Recently bounced emails with Daniel at Old Mill, very helpful fellow.

I’ve only tried a small handful, but Daniel seems to have a very broad range, with each of the snuffs being different and unique. I’ve only got a tiny tin of Butternut Toast, so I’m eking it out. One of my favorite sweet snuffs.

I have tried most of Daniels offerings and not all are to my taste but the ones that do appeal to me are amazing. Really, snuffs like Puro Dominicano, Limoncello, and Moulin Rouge are incredible. I am sure that making all these snuffs are quite time consuming so I think they are well worth his asking price, in fact a bargain really. We are lucky to have OM, SWS, and Abraxas doing these small batch snuffs. In time I would hope more talented millers appear with there own creations.
