I know Chef Daniel had some unique methods and techniques that went into making his snuff. It will be a sad day when his snuff no longer exists. I really enjoy kind of blue. I was wondering if there is any other snuff blend out there that is remotely similar to Kind of Blue?

M

I never tried Kind of Blue, and I wish I had. Sorry I can’t help you. I’m sure somebody here has tried it and can give you advice. I went through a time when I bought a lot of snuff from Chef, just the small and medium tins. I still have a cigar box full of them. The one I liked best of all, was the Virginia Toast. He and I emailed back and forth for a while, with him giving me tips on making my own toast snuffs. Its sad that he died so young. He made a lot of friends here and added a unique presence to our collective love of tobacco.

Hmmm … I only tried that one pinch from your stash.  More “research” will be needed!

What are the main scents you are picking up from it?  It seems I recall a light, sweet berry scent?

P

Yeah, I enjoy all of chefs blends. Very unique. It’s a sad loss. @Cobguy, I get a blueberry lavender scent with other scents I can’t pin point.

H

There was also garden mint, and a strain of Burley you can only get from some local farmer he knew. The tobacco was also cooked in Amish Butter and cask packed for six months before being released. There is literally nothing like it, and never will be again.

P

Yeah I posted this, then I messaged you. I figured there wasn’t. Just was hoping there might be.

From the Chef menu Kind of Blue: The mood, not the color, honoring Miles Davis Sextets masterpiece album recorded in spring of 1959. This is a moody fruit and floral snuff suitable for evenings with cool jazz on the music machine and a glass of your favorite adult beverage. Composed of Toasted Burley, Red Virginia and Maryland leaf, enhanced with blueberries and dried lavender blossoms from Provence infused into 100 proof Russian vodka along with a few strips of Meyer lemon zest, a vanilla bean and some fresh spearmint, allowed to age in toasted oak barrels before being milled to a medium moisture, medium grind snuff.

P

Yep, that one.

L

After posting his menu, I had to get my little sample he had sent me and take a pinch. The spearmint shines thru nicely!

P

@Llo I got some Old Mill kind of blue in my nose, sitting on my patio and drinking a proper Tom Collins. Now that you pointed out the spearmint, I picked up on that as well. That was one of the scents I couldn’t pinpoint before.

@Psicko Oh I know, wasn’t saying anything about that. Just paying homage B-)

Kind of Blue is one of my favorites from Chef Daniel. I discussed the recipe with him briefly as I had been bugging him to make a unique blueberry snuff. He wanted to have the blueberry more in the background but I asked him to make the blueberry more prominent as it is my favorite fruit. He kindly agreed and gave it the Kind of Blue title and sent a sample for me to try. So I feel I have a special relationship with this snuff. And I am all the more fond of it knowing it came from my friend, Daniel. I am happy I bought a fair amount of it.

And in answer to your question, @Psicko, there is nothing else like it that I know of.

P

@fredh I guess you are the one to be thanked for bringing this idea to Chef Daniel. @hitsuzen ah, gotcha. Painkillers made me misunderstand the tone.

I also was bugging him to make more coffee snuffs as I was highly impressed with his Cafe Brulot (original version) which I thought was the only coffee snuff that was close to Nigel’s Abraxas Cafe 11 (although I readily admit that Wow Coffee Bite is pretty damn good as well but not as good as Cafe 11 or Cafe Brulot).

But Daniel said he was not excited to make coffee snuffs because he could not figure out a way for the snuffs to retain the coffee essence. He said that the coffee scents he has worked with tend to dissipate prematurely. FWIW
