Daniel asked me for my thoughts on this one by email after I ordered it from him, so I’m posting them here. It is a very interesting and complex snuff, but to me, also quite a challenging one. Frankly, even though I usually take the line that a beginner can start with complex snuffs and jump in at the deep end, I’d think twice about recommending this one to a beginner. It’s very dark, medium grind and moisture, and goes up your nose easily enough. The initial impression is benevolent enough, it has a sweet hint, with a slightly herb-y aftertaste. I said to Daniel that I noticed a bitter taste. It’s not the scent that’s bitter, but the drip. Actually, that’s not a bad thing, I’m not a big fan of sugar and enjoy strong, black, unsweetened coffee, so bitter can be good. I’m not sure if it’s from anything that’s been added to the tobacco, it could well be from the perique itself. Perique is funny like that, it can be sweet and bitter at the same time. This snuff gives me some of the warm feeling in the back of the throat that I get from smoking a pipe and rarely get from snuff. I told Daniel I found it “broody” and that it would be good to take during a thunderstorm (rainy season over here, or just about. I’ll have a chance to test this over the next week). I try to keep my reviews factual, without letting my imagination run away with me, but the name, Evangeline, added to the fact that I’m reading a gripping history of Haiti at the moment (what an screwed up place!) made me think of Evangeline as a sullen slave woman who might kill her master with a knife after passionate congress. Forgive me for that, it was just a flight of imagination. So, I’m glad I have it and I’d consider buying more when the small tin I have is finished, but I don’t think I’ll burn through it. I’d probably use it a few times a week. It suited my mood last night when I was lying awake worrying about a land purchase. It’s not a light, comfortable, fun, easy snuff. I’m sorry, but comparisons with the SWS Perique are inevitable. I’d say the SWS is a more conventional, restrained snuff that I could use more often. The Evangeline is much more dark and powerful. But I’d have to say, the power is controlled, it never gets out of hand. She may murder you while you’re sleeping, but she doesn’t shriek and go out of control. A very interesting, unusual snuff, not really like any other commercially available snuff I’ve heard of or tried, not even really close. Definitely worth trying.

@JakartaBoy‌ I think you’ve nailed it. Both Evangeline and Acadia snuffs are my attempt to capture some of the mystique of growing up Cajun and evenings having Longfellow’s epic poem read by one of the elders of the clan: “This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks…” The Cajun side of my family has been in what is now Jefferson Davis Parish since they got their butts booted out of Nova Scotia by the British in the early 1700’s. The Richard and Dugas (pronounced Ree-shard and Doo-gah) families are primarily in the rice business but through extensive barter they’ve also been involved with coffee, tobacco, cotton and distilled spirits, not always considering the niceties of the legal system while doing business. There’s a lot of Perique in my heritage to say the least; I’ve elders that used Perique as RYO tobacco. Me likes Perique Perique, to me, is like the Martini: One is not enough. Two is too many. Three is just right. Greg Pease wrote what I consider the definitive treatise on this most finicky of condimental tobaccos, and his comparison to a culinary spice rack is spot on. The challenge we face is that it isn’t used in snuff. Until now. I think the term Brooding captures the feeling I was looking for in these two snuffs; not to be taken lightly, not as an amusement and not without consequences if you turn your back. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/evangeline-a-tale-of-acadie/ http://glpease.com/BriarAndLeaf/?p=11

When I still smoked a pipe, hands down my first pipe upon getting home in the evening while walking the dog was some Samuel Gawith St. James Flake - I loved the leathery , fruity and almost narcotic smoke it made. As a side note, the method in which perique is treated during growth, harvested, cured and fermented is amazingly interesting to me. I want to see it first hand one day. That said, I also notice the “bitter” of the Evangeline, and while it does not unsettle me, it is stark enough I cannot make this one an all day snuff - it leads to heartburn I learned sadly. As for a nice thick nose full while enjoying a glass of Maker’s Mark and lemon, however, it is superb.

Does this snuff have something to do with @perique on this board, @chefdaniel ? DUN DUN DUNNNN

@chefdaniel, I must admit, I just looked up “Cajun” in Wikipedia to find out a bit more about what the story is. Just goes to show, snuffhouse can help to improve your understanding of both geography and the human universe. I barely remember some BBC documentary about the “languages of America”, or something like that, where they talked about Cajun French, with a big detour into the food of the region. Very interesting.

@JakartaBoy‌ Yes, a very interesting region, culture and history. Weird may be more accurate. I only visit during the cooler “months” which is actually about ten days in the middle of January. Gotta get my gumbo. Cheers

Evangeline reminds me a lot of Escudo, which means I really like this snuff. It’s got a peat, mild peppery spice, and dark fruit scent; and has a quick mild burn with minimal drip. I’ve taken it as an all day and it stuffed me up a little, so I prefer to take this snuff right after dinner in one large take. I like it to hit my throat and drip because the scent and flavor are intoxicating to me. If you are a fan of Perique… then do yourself a favor and give Evangeline a try. You won’t regret it, as it is the best this limited genre has to offer.

Hey guys This is one great snuff and by the reads above we all agree. I also maybe strangely to youz,is a smell sweetness of a New Orleans dessert Beignets. And also included in that smell mixed in is caramel Espresso. I really love this snuff. I am just wowed by the very carefully blended ingredients. Very refined and just damn good it’s hard to put it into words. (For me atleast lol) I also now that I have it in my nose again smell a small batch Bourbon actually has the notes of my favorite two Bourbons. Bookers bourbon,Stagg Bourbon. This is my favorite now I think. I just love this Old Mill. Never met Chef Daniel but would love to meet him and see his snuff mill and chat about snuff production. Very intrigued about his products. Keep up the great work of artisan snuffs, there is love in every batch! How could there not be A+++ you can get a sense of the hard work and careful blending of ingredients the nose doesn’t lie. This is such a fun ride. Please never stop making snuff chef! I’d be ruined & depressed if you ever did. You have a certain style in your snuffs that another alternative couldn’t be found IMHO it’s just that different. I like your style for me also Old Mill snuffs linger very long too and that’s another + as well. The prices are very fair I think as well even still fair as cost went up a bit. Well worth it. Will give more reviews on the lot that I bought soon. Been busy and have buddy in the hospital with lesions on his brain that almost killed him. Promise more reviews soon. ----Another note to whom is the boss man or boss woman of this great forum. Is there a way we can have a snuff wardrobe attached to each of our profiles so we can list our snuff stock and have a section for our personal star reviews from * ** *** **** ***** in ratings and longevity of fragrance in the nose. ----

^That snuff wardrobe is a cool idea^

I hope we can make it happen. I belong to Basenotes.net and we all have a fragrance wardrobe. Let me see if I can find a link to a wardrobe on Basenotes to get a better idea

http://www.basenotes.net/wardrobe/22538&t=tried&s=n I typed manually frags that were not in directory. But the ones that are scroll down and see how it’s set up. I think it would be great for us snuffers and pipe smokers as well.
