I realise how utterly obtuse this is but in the film Waterloo, Ponsonby states that: “An old Jew from Alexandria had the blend” after Uxbridge pronounces the offered snuff “savage stuff”. My question is this; at that time (early C19th), what sort of flavours of snuff were popular / prevalent in Alexandria, or North Africa generally (or indeed amongst British officers)? A virtual pint to the first sensible answer!
