Ode to Toque Quit, one of the great natural unscented snuffs

The very first snuff I ever tried. I just bought one, little, tentative 10gm tin of the stuff on a challenge from someone on a pipe forum, when I laughed at the idea that you could satisfy a nicotine craving with nasal snuff. Love at first sight. It seemed really clean, sharp, a neutral tobacco taste that didn’t linger, quick hitting and satisfying. I thought that was the only snuff I was ever going to need. And then I tried the White Indians. And then Viking Dark. And toasts. And some of the artisan snuffs. And I began to feel slightly … no, not contemptuous. But as though I’d moved on to better things. But I took out a container of it the other night, and it’s really good stuff. Just like what I thought at first, it’s almost like the vodka shot of the snuff universe. The others are more like the whiskey, brandy and tequila – all with their own strong character, while with vodka, lack of strong character, some sort of invisibility, is what you’re looking for. It’s worth of a place with the great, unscented, natural snuffs. Actually, it tastes like a toast to me. I think it’s got something of the quality of HDT about it. Anyway, it’s a good snuff. So, my vote for the great natural unscented snuffs is for Viking Dark, HDT, Dholakia White, Quit and Swisher Square (just because it’s the only Scotch I’ve tried). I’d have to put Havana Toast in some sort of “specialty” category, it just doesn’t seem like a basic natural snuff. What’s your recommendation for the naturals?

  1. Wos IHDT #22 2. SWS St.James Parish 3. SG Back Rapee 4. GH Irish D 5. SG Irish D Light 6. Lundy Foot (not sure it is plain) 7. F&T HDT 8. Swisher 3 Thistle 9. Swisher Square 10. Havana Toast to my mind it is pretty “basic” Caveat: I have never tried Quit or any of the Unscented SG Crest series

NB Madras–simple tobacco and a heavy hitter. It is my all-day work-week snuff. (I will admit that I’ve yet to try Toque Quit or Rustica, they might be just as good).

Favorite is Irish Do Light, followed by HDT.

@Ivan, looks like I should put SG Back Rapee on my list, it sounds different enough from the snuffs I usually take. @mecompco, yes, NB Madras is good. I picked up 100 grams of it in Tibet, where it’s one of the readily available brands. I got it before it started becoming available to most members of snuffhouse, which made me think it was particularly special and valuable!

Agree with you that Quit does have a “toast” flavor. But then again many of the Toques have that similar flavor for me. I’ve tried quit a few of their offerings in their bullet formate. An excellent way to sample their offerings.

I’m not even sure where they make it, just that I LIKE it. I really should see about getting a kilo to jar up–only got around 400 grams left.

I like to blast NB using the bendy straw method, pinch nostrils together to get it to stick, blow out the excess, and hang on. What a rush!
