So, after reading a comment from someone on this Forum that NTSU makes a great dip… i decided to try it. A Big Pinch in my bottom Lip. Holy Crap, the taste wasn’t to bad, but man, BANG nicotine rush. After 3/4 minutes I had to spit it out… Wanna a rush, try it
@Micheltn, yes I’ve also tried it, it made me shake a bit! I just find it a bit gritty between my teeth.
Really huh! Damn, I knew it was strong, but this way it’s really strong. I used twice as much as in the nose, so that helped too I guess… but, it’s quit nice!
I got the idea from one of my African clients–when I showed him the NTSU he said that people he knew in Sudan used tobacco just like that as a dip.
Ah Mike, it was you! Thanks for replying. Yes, I think it’ should be used that way too. It’s just to coarse / heavy & messy for the nose.
There’s probably been a bunch of blokes in Africa reading this forum for the past few years thinking to themselves “Look at these silly Americans and Europeans, cramming NTSU up their noses!” If so I stand corrected, but is there any evidence to suggest that NTSU is nasal snuff tobacco? Or was it just assumed?
Well if memory recalls its quite grainy but i’ll give it a try and post how it went for me.
Another case of “which orifice does this really belong in,” not unlike American snuff.
It’s only slightly finer than Copenhagen Snuff, technically. Tried dipping it once and found it quite nice.
@ street carp: yes, its nasal snuff according to South African traditional use patterns. Native S. Africans use it nasally. Indian South Africans sometimes take snuff orally. Our resident South African will verify this, no doubt. It should be kept in mind that Africa is not homogenous. Sudan is as far away from South Africa as England is from Uzbekistan.
I agree that Africa is not homogenous of course. Also, in fairness my client was also familiar with nasal use. The sense I got, though, was that oral use was more common.
When I saw it for sale on some sites, it was sold as 10 can rolls, that made me think it was moreso used orally.
Just dipped a little NTSU menthol. Whooee, that had a kick…
Tried some Menthol too, damn nice! Only I have sore gums now and a little blister in my mouth… must be getting used to dipping…
In Souh Africa, where Taxi and Ntsu are made, oral use of snuff is almost unknown. I only learned about it here. Keep in mind that SA is a small country on the most southern point of Africa. Our culture differs completely from countries up north which are near Europe and/or Asia. The natives of South Africa only became aware of the rest of the world in 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck settled here. Up till then they thought they were the only people on the globe. So, all snuffs made in South Africa are nasal snuff of which some can be used orally as well. Chewing tobacco is well known but not so popular any more. Today most people prefer smoking cigarettes and even smoking a pipe is seen as a sign of poverty. You will find lots of illegal, cheap cigarettes here, sold by street vendors. And, of course, the best and cheapest dagga can be bought on every street corner. So, snuffing and dipping is OUT!
according to the last statistics I read South Africa was in the Top three countries for oral tobacco use. Have things changed that much in a few years or should you not trust statistics you read online.
Lie, lie more, show statistics.
@bob, since 1994 the native population, who were the oral tobacco users, became aware of the Western World cultures (vultures). They started to “move on”, started drinking wine, brandy and whisky instead of their traditional beer, began smoking cigarettes instead of pipes and oral tobacco etc. In Oudtshoorn, where I lived for 7 years, tobacco was farmed on a huge scale. There were a tobacco farmers cooperation and 9 tobacco manufacturers, mainly pipe and chew stuff. Today only 2 farms, producing tobacco on a small scale, are left. The coop now belongs to a couple of farmhands who produce the worst chew you can imagine. Only 1 pipe tobacco manufacturer is still operating, also on a much reduced scale. That goes for the whole of South Africa. So whoever said oral tobacco is used on a big scale here, missed the bus in a big way! I know the miners in the Johannesburg region still use oral tobacco but how many can they be out of a population of 50,000,000? Dip is used by the Indian population as well as some natives in the Natal region but again, they are only a handful compared to the rest of SA. I think many times people refer to South Africa when they actually mean Africa. Now, Africa is BIG, very much so. Please check a map of Africa and you will see that SA is but a very small part of Africa. And in the rest of Africa, the Western cultures were left behind a long time ago already. It’s only Mugabe, the African Ape, who still wants to be like the King of the UK, with his old Rolls Royce, bowler hat, frock-coat and…I’d rather say no more.
Many of the historical documents I’ve read (many of which have been posted here or on Top25 Snuff by snuffgrinder and Filek) indicate that tobacco had found its way to African cultures before the European colonial period, or indeed any extensive European contact. It was certainly taken as snuff, perhaps even a majority of it. In several accounts of early European explorers offering snuff to natives, they are amazed at the quantity that the native would shove up their nose. Apparanly that’s the way they were used to taking it. Well, that sounds a lot like how Taxi/Ntsu lend themselves to being taken to me, so I’m pretty sure we are doing it right.
About south africa the thing I read was from early 2000. I took it with a grain of salt. Mugabe is a scary dude for sure. I really don’t think his head is screwed on right. He’s one of the type of politicals that you really wonder what his trip is and if he’s got advisors that don’t want to give him any bad news. I’am more scared of him then the standard guys people are afraid of. Heck he’s one of the guys who even when I’ve seen where he was coming from I scratched my head at how he comes up with his actions. Sorry about the politicalness but I honestly feel more like I’am talking straight up gossip. Africa is amazingly big and diverse, which is actualy one of it’s biggest problems from a logistical stand point. Where for example china, america, europe are also big places they all have geographical bands that make it much easier to for example maintain solid agriculture bases that can cover for anamolies in other parts of the region. Plus putting a big arid desert in the heart of an area isn’t good for agriculture. Though it’s amazing how many diffrent worlds there are in Africa.
