Now you can buy a larger Patrick Collins Box.

I have a couple of these and quality wise, compared to the heartwood boxes, these are far superior and quite beautiful objects. The thing is, I don’t use them. I am both greedy and have stubby fingers. They just don’t carry enough snuff for a day and are not deep enough to get a good pinch. I also have a Sharrow box by heartwood and this is just too big. I see on the www.woodensnuffbox site, there are some dice boxes, but again, too big. So my thought is, would there be a market for larger PC boxes, or is it just me?

I would get one a bit larger. I like mine (I have three regular ones) but I can never get the last pinch or two out. I think a bit deeper (not much wider or longer) is the solution.

@khalid, IMHO I think the ideal would be for Patrick Collins to make a regular snuffbox the size of his Triple Techs except without the extras. To me, that snuffbox is the perfect size.

@khalid, I’m not opposed to making a larger snuffbox, but I can’t make any promises of exactly what or when. My woodworking/website is indeed just a hobby so it is hard to find the time to make stuff. Not a bad idea to see what others would like to see as far as total size of box and snuff storage area and go with something that would suit “the masses”. I put together a design a few years ago that would be bigger than the singles and still incorporate the secondary access hole like a tripletech but without a spoon (doubletech?). I personally pinch or use back of hand method about equally. I actually have designed many cool snuffboxes that I know people would love it’s just so hard to get the time to make them a reality. I’ve learned that I need to make decent sized batches of any design to make it worthwhile or semi-profitable. And even then it takes a long time to move them. Let’s face it, there’s only so many people in the world interested in snuff, and only a small percentage of them will end up buying a Patrick Collins snuffbox. Most people have no idea how much time and cost goes into making these. I won’t be quitting my day job any time soon. I try not to think about it because I do enjoy creating items that I know I can’t go anywhere and buy, and I want people that share my interests to be able to have these items also. Like I said, no promises, but I do hope and plan to come out with a new snuffbox before the holiday season. Patrick @xander, If you don’t mind the back of hand method you might try opening the box just enough to reveal about 1/8" of the storage area and tap those final pinches out.

Thanks, Patrick. I actually do that already, but not with toasts or scotches. Usually its just easier to refill the box!

@onefortheroad Thanks for your thoughtful response. I have another thought. I can imagine the time and work that goes into your boxes and value highly the craftsmanship. I am also very intrigued by the other cool designs you have. Would bespoke snuffboxes be possible, all be it at great expense?

I wish Patrick would make a flip top wooden box. I know they would be harder to machine but flip tops are the original and best design for wooden boxes.

In my opinion, another nice design feature is a magnetic lid. I have a snuffbox like this right in front of me, and it would be ideal if it weren’t so shoddily made. The lid is so loose that I have to be careful to keep it from coming off when I’m opening or shutting it, though the magnets do keep the lid in place with the lid closed, though barely. The magnets would allow the box to continue to be used after it has been used enough so that the lid becomes loose.

I would love a Doubletech

I agree that a bigger box would only need be a shade longer and wider, with more useable depth.

I’ll try to keep these ideas in mind next time I get some time in the shop. I was asked which of my snuffboxes holds the most snuff so I did some measuring/math. The double holds the most. Here’s what I came up with in cubic inches: PC single 0.69ci PC tripletech 0.78ci PC double (0.46x2) 0.96ci being handmade they can vary a bit. and for comparison… WoS small 5g round tin 0.83ci J+H Wilson small square tin (5g) 0.74ci (actually a bit less due to rounded corners) Toque small round tin (10g) 1.48ci

Patrick, since you computed these volumes due to my request, let me say thank you. Just my two pence worth: My ideal would be a box the size of one of your Triple Techs, with the space used for the extras turned into snuff storage space–a “single-tech” if you will.

Happened to be at a loose end over Easter and looked in at the wooden snuff box. I was very pleased to find some larger PC boxes with Bufford Freres inlays. Mine arrived yesterday and it is the perfect size for a days supply, with useable depth. I am chuffed. You can find them at woodensnuffbox.com in the various sized box section.

I’m eagerly awaiting a couple of the side-by-side double boxes from that site. That will easily give me probably 3 days plus usage I’d imagine from what I can tell. This thread seems as good a place to ask as any (though maybe a little off-topic) but should I be choosy which two flavours I put side-by-side to stop infusion of flavours between the two compartments?
