Not gettin' the Nicotine Buzz?

Hey Folks, I’ve been enjoying pipe tobacco for about a year now and I just figured I would give snuff a try. Being new to this form of tobacco I joined the site and I have a question for all of you “snuff experts”. While I only just started using snuff about a week ago, I’m not getting any nicotine buzz from using snuff. I have been using Gawith Apricot but I also ordered some F&T Bordeaux and High Dry Toast( both which I am finding require a seasoned sniffer) Got any suggestions, comments, or questions?

As a pipe smoker, your tolerance to nicotine is probably already fairly high. I started snuffing about a year ago, but I have been dipping (copenhagen, et al.) for nearly 15 years. About the only way I can get a “buzz” from nicotine is if I go like 48-72 hours without it. But, don’t fret, here is the plus side. I just gradually noticed a can of dip was lasting me longer and longer. So, even though I don’t get a buzz, at least I’ve reduced my consumption of dip. Don’t know if that helps, but I think those that get a buzz from snuff are typically the ones that have a lower tolerance because they mainly use snuff as their nicotine delivery system. If you still want to get that buzz though, I would just try upping your dosage and getting some stout scotches like Rooster, Bruton or Three Thistles Strong. Toque quit is also supposed to be quite high in nicotine.

The various snuffs differ quite alot in regards of nicotine. But the generally strongest ones are the Toasts and Scotches, which are a bit difficult to take due to the very fine grind. Toque Quit and the Toque Natural Toast are nicotine powerstations. I´ve just had the Natural Toast yesterday evening and I had to take a break in between, as it delivers quite a punch and is so smooth and delicious you just can´t force yourself to stop.

The above points are well made. For me, snuff is more of a taste/ritual/hobby type thing now. It helped me get off cigs but the nicotine it gives is more on the maintenance level than anything else. I’ve never felt anything of a buzz with it but I suppose we all have different levels of tolerance. Something else to take into account is the size of pinch you are using. Many new users take a very small pinch - hence, obviously, not much nic. You will get a lot more by taking a large pinch of something mild than with the strongest snuffs - like toasts/Scotchs - simply because as Red Star says, they are hard to take. You might be surprised to find that larger pinches are not necessarily more sneezy, so as usual with snuff it pays to experiment a bit.

I used Swedish snus for my main nicotine delivery system and I can tell you this. When I made the switch, I was “clucking like a chicken” for about ten days. Very unpleasant withdrawals but, it did stop as my body gave in. I find I can get a little buzz going from snuff but, only from my Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast – You could place an order for some rustica leaves (grind into a powder ) and mix with your snuff for enhancing the nicotine hit a little/lot.

Yeah I have some F&T High Dry Toast but being a newb I’m having some trouble not getting a throat full when I use it. I really am not expecting the buzz you get from a cigarette or a pipe just a little boost ha. I guess with time it will come…

I am a pipe smoker and snuff doesn’t give me a buzz, but does take the edge off my jones. A help in taking the fine grind snuffs: first breathe in about 3/4 of a breath. hold it in and snuff. This will help keep it out of your throat and lungs.

Yes, I’ve found I have to lay off other forms of tobacco a bit before I can appreciate the snuff- cigarettes in particular. If I’ve been smoking, I’m just completely numb to the buzz offered by most snuff. Also, while I’ve sniffed only a couple of toasts, I’ve found that they just don’t compare with the scotches in the nicotine department. Sometimes I’ve found if I’m too stuffy/dried out and my nose isn’t moisturized enough, the nicotine from the snuff doesn’t get absorbed well because it just sits there all dry and crusty like. I’ve found that cleaning out my nose, moistening the insides of the nostrils, and sometimes also a nice steamy beverage (coffee or tea) warms and moistens up my nose and I get better absorption from my snuff. I used to have problems with it dripping out the front- now I have the opposite problem, where my nose is dry as a desert and half the time to snuff poffs right back out when I exhale! Darn dry Alaska winter! (I’m convinced snuffing is the best in the spring and summer time, when it’s nice and humid.) Also, Nachman, I just tried the technique you suggested of breathing it 3/4ths of the way before sniffing and it has helped tremendously with my habit of accidentally over-sniffing! Thanks, I don’t know why I never thought of that myself!

I find this so strange because I find that snuff gives me a big nic hit. Seems that the more carefull I’am snuffing (the more I make sure it gets to the right places) the bigger the buzz. Funny thing is that now of days I don’t feel barely a damn thing of nicotine when I smoke a cigarette, doesn’t even fix the jones actualy.

As a former (and still occasional) smoker, if snus is my beer than snuff is a shot. But either way, I’m not smoking!

@giaach, I was in a similar place not quite 3 weeks ago. Then I got my first American Scotches. Similar in grind to the HDT you mention you have. Perhaps the finer grind of the Scotch forced me to perfect technique or mebbe it was as Xander made mention to me when he posted, "I do know that it took a little while for my brain to catch up to this input method " Suffice to say I’m right there with James S.'s analogy now, “if snus is my beer than snuff is a shot”!

I have a high tolerance for nicotine. I always have Snus under my lip and enjoy a cigar & a nice assortment of pipe tobacco every day. I also enjoy snuff all day long. I no longer catch a noticeable buzz but enjoy all my tobacco just the same.

@ ukiceman - That’s a great idea adding the rustica to yur everyday snuff(s) Personally I’ve not had much of a buzz when I take snuff. Now occasionaly I’ve had that head rushing body numbing buzz, but very rarely. I find that Fribourg and Treyers Macouba was the one that really did me in when the tin was fresh, lol must be that Tonka essence! I was also using rooster almost nonstop for 3 weeks everyday, I found that I was getting “withdrawls” again, more often (former Smoker–> chewer) So I definately think some higher nicotine snuffs might give a buzz if done in copious amounts!

I forgot to say that what a good snuff does do for me is give a gentle and short ‘lift’ - its not a buzz but its there…

I was wondering whether adding some Eno’s Fruit Salts to snuff won’t bring about a good buzz?

Sorry to revive an old thread. Put some Dholakia White up your nose if you want a buzz. My nicotine tolerance is quite high but this one blows me away more than Rooster.

the only real buzz i’ve gotten from snuff was a hefty dose of levi garrett.

Scotches don’t give be a “buzz” I get more of a “rush” from them. A damn potent rush too. Dholakia White = Rush Dholakia Black = Buzz

Sometimes I get a slight buzz or rush from snuff, but the main thing I notice is that when I’m doing it I don’t crave cigarettes or snus. I’m afraid I’m old enough to where if I want a real “buzz” it’s going to take something far more expensive than tobacco. I’m very happy with all of the sensual pleasures than snuff affords, especially the light lift and relaxed feeling I get and the feeling of NEITHER rushing on a cigarette nor going through nicotine withdrawal. Come to think of it, I never really liked a nicotine buzz; I like it insofar as it makes me feel “normal.”

I still like the odd cigarette and am firmly committed to not worrying about that. Snuff maintains me though.
