Not a review of Wit and Wisdom snuff

Wit and Wisdom was a toasted and lightly mentholated snuff made by Gallahers. This is not a review, more a reminiscence so I have no idea where it should go. W&W, like it’s Irish toast sister, came in small, square metal tins of whatever amount those tins hold (5g?) and were occasionally seen in UK shops. I seem to remember they were distributed by the Manchester branch of Gallahers and were very hard to find. I last bought one mid-80s and they probably never lasted into the internet age. Very nice snuff - I have been waiting for someone to make a lightly mentholated toast ever since. Xander very kindly sent me a tin, mostly full but ancient looking, and even with the terrible closure on those tins the basic character of the snuff remains - a great toast, sadly gone.

So is this a whisper of an up coming snuff from the Abraxas camp? If you master it, I’ll take 140 gram Jar.

sounds great. I think someone could make such a thing the question is who would it be. I mean almost any of the companies should be able to do something like that.

It is really sad thet there are so many greats (or even near greats) that are for all practical purposes gone… If only to be restored… Ah nostalgia…

Come on @snuffster, make it happen.

Maybe next year if no one else has made one. My next snuffs are waiting to be made and with the limited amount of hours in the day there’s so much to do, but I don’t rule it out. I have got to get the last two Draguns made, which I am very behind schedule on. I have always hoped Roderick would make one - I’m sure a Toque version would be excellent.

I have vague recollection of this snuff, probably never had it though, but Carroll’s snuffs were always more popular in Dublin, being originally local business. Gallaher’s was always kind of culchie and later west brit business.

@AllanH i doubt many people would know what the term culchie means :slight_smile: wit and wisdom was my first snuff got in in belfast probably late 80s it might have been made there as the big gallahers factory was still open

it means rural everyone knows that! Yeah toque was my best guess for who would make this one right.

I looked up Culchie on wikipedia after I read that. Now I know, but I guessed from the context. Funny, I study Irish language, but they really don’t teach you many of the Anglo-Irish colloquialisms. Learning all the time…

Oh, I just want to add here to Snuffster’s not a review that W&W was not a very fine ground toast like IHT or IDT or HDT, etc. Its probably got the same grind as the WoS #20, maybe a wee bit finer. Also its darker and less smokey.Its hard to guess what the original moisture was from a vintage sample, but it looks like it was pretty dry. You know, just in case any snuff makers are reading and thinking about recreating this gem. :wink:

@snuffster This type of snuff is right up your alley too. As I recall you proclaiming the use of slight menthol as a win, win. A bergamot toast with slight menthol sounds like a win. What are you going to call it man? Culchie Toast? Irish Culchie? High Culchie? Irish SP Culchie Toast?

All this talk about a mentholated toast I just had to mix some up. F&T HDT & Taxi Green [7/1] the toast still shines nicely.

@Juxtaposer - I’m mulling this over, a definite maybe.
