Nose run

I hope you can help me understand the causes of nose run. Specifically differences between various grinds and the use of menthol, camphor or eucalyptus. It seems to me that the finer the grind, the less of an issue with nose run. Menthols appear to also cause my nose to run but I am uncertain if it is the menthol itself or some other constituent ingredient. What is your experience?

It really depends on the snuff for me. Yes, I usually get a runny nose from coarser and moister snuffs, but not all of them. Fribourg and Treyer Santo Domingo and some schmalzlers for example. I don’t get a runny nose from most medicated snuffs. Two examples are Poschl Kloster Andechs Spezial and FC Basel. So the issue is not the menthol content for me.

I would say that every snuff makes my nose runny. Only the time needed depends. Schmalzlers faster and toasts slowlier.

Dry fine-grind snuff tends to not cause my nose to run, but sometimes it does.

Course-grinds tend to moisten my nose more, and my nose runs a little more often, but not always.

If I’m doing physical labor at work, my nose is more likely to run whatever the snuff.

I’m guessing that all of this differs a lot from person to person.  A lot.

Snuffs with decongestant additives such as menthol, camphor, eucalyptus,  etc. make my nose run.

The other ones have a tendency to dry up and form an armor plate inside my nose.

Of course, some other snuffs, such as American Scotches also clear up my sinuses.

I use snuff for it’s decongestant qualities in the first place, so a runny nose is a GOOD thing!

Coarse moist snuffs used to make my nose run, then I stumbled on chasing those with something a bit drier and finer.  Problem solved…for me.  YMMV.

I also think some practice helps too.  I haven’t had a runny nose in several years no matter what snuff I’m using.  Another thing is getting the hang of getting into your nose and not your sinuses.

Just my opinion…

I wonder if that explains why my menthols are all so much weaker lately. I need to work on screwing up my technique again

I would guess the alkalinity of the salts added in various amounts to certain snuff also irritate the nose enough to make it run.

@Snuffbox Too much alkaline will definitely cause irritation.
