noobie qustions and observations

First I apologize if this is answered somewhere else already (I have tried to google and tried looking around here first before asking this but if its a BTDT maybe somebody could point me at it in a link?) I’m currently looking at (and smelling and for the most part at the moment just admiring all as if its some sort of smorgasbord of great smelling salts or something heh) containers of the following: McCrystal’s Smoker’s Blend Snuff Quit WIth Snuff Smoker’s Blend Rockit Naked Snuff Toque Natural Rooster General Loose Snus (yes, I am aware that last one kinda sorta doesn’t belong on the list :stuck_out_tongue: but here’s where at least one of my questions comes in) I am guessing that my nasal snuffs happen to all be really fine types (I got them from Mr Snuff’s store and used the "wizard’ to help me pick easy sniff types, save for the rooster which is probably not considered an easy one due to its strength) but they all seem like they are probably all fine types and not course then I look over at my general snus (which, granted, at this moment is the only loose snus I’ve opened and experienced)… but aside from the fact that the snus does seem a little bit coarser etc… they do seem to be pretty close to the same… so… why can’t we also just sniff snus? Has anybody ever done this? (I mean, aside from me while messing around waiting for the nasal snuff to arrive) What is the difference really, aside from nasal snuff coming in itty bitty containers and the ones I have being more finely ground? aren’t they close enough to count? I mean I realize that the nasal snuff has some start up strong oder and I’m supposed to be letting them air out or someting first but I’ll be damned if I don’t actually LIKE that strong startup smell and actually not wanting it to leave (when I’m not sniffing I’m smelling them) and why can’t we just sort of lay the snuff inside our noses? I have a sort of a pipe spoon tool thing (sorta like a swedish knife but its fold outs are a prong and the spoon and a flat thing instead) and I found I can just sort of lay the snuff just inside of my nose with this I’m not doing a lot of sneezing etc (probably because I had accustomed myself to the idea in the time before my shipment arrived by playing with bits of snus in my nose) How long should you leave nasal snuff in there, if its content to stay in there a realy long time, shouuld you leave it? is it okay to sniff more when some you sniffed before is still in there? thanks in advance for your patience with a goofy noobie here. I had a weird thought about making itty bitty ‘nasal portions’ (pea or smaller sized bits wrapped in equally itty bitty teabags, snus portion style but for inside the nose but I think I’ll leave that idea go for now)

Oh boy, where to begin. If you want to sniff snus, go right ahead. I’ve never tried that. The ingredients are quite different though, salt in particular. That may cause irritation if you do too much iof it. I find it odd that Mr. Snuff’s wizard calls the ones you bought easy. Those are fairly fine grinds except for the QWS one. You don’t need to air them out unless the ammonia level (normal in very fresh snuff) bothers you. Some people like a little of it. Yes, you can just lay the snuff in your nose. For some types that works well. Probably easiest for a beginner. BTW I think you have a Czech pipe tool, which resembles a Swiss (not Swedish) Army Knife. Those are handy. I keep a few different sized snuff spoons on hand for certain duties. Eventually you will want to learn to pinch. This is the best method which not only brings about the best flavor from your snuff but also is actually the easiest amd fastest method to perform once its mastered. Further it will allow you more control over where the snuff goes, which is important for finer grinds. There are threads on that around here, I would read as much of the forum’s archives as you have time for. You will learn a lot. How long to leave it? As long as you like. If it becomes uncomfortable, blow it out. Yes, you can sniff one on top of the other; its all personal choice really. For me, I’ll clean out a little bit if I have time, so that the new snuff has more area to cling to and so that I don’t mix flavors that I don’t want to mix. The most important thing is to just experiment, and read a lot. I learned lots more than I ever thought I would by hanging around here. Welcome to the world of snuff and to the best forum on the planet!

[quote]so… why can’t we also just sniff snus? Has anybody ever done this? OK,with the disclaimer out of the way…a little while back someone (snuffgrinder?) posted about a number of Popes that used snuff. One of them had received permission to import Ettan snus which he used as snuff. Well of course this had to have been los as portion snus was many years away. And as I love Ettan and don’t use los I immediately set a couple portions out to dry. That night I sieved the tobacco from them 4-5 times until it looked snuffable, and proceeded to take a couple of small (for me anyway) pinches. I had forgotten that I’d also put a portion in 10-15 minutes before. WATTA RUSH! Within 60 seconds or so my head was spinning badly enough that I had to sit down or fall down. As soon as I was able to stand I headed for the bathroom where I spit out the portion and proceeded to irrigate my nostrils and sinus’s with large amounts of saline solution. I don’t think that I snused or used any snuff until 2-3 hrs later. Can we sniff snus? Yep,but be carefull! My next snus order will have a tin of Ettan los included. For “experimental purposes”.

I heard that the current pope uses snuff! Norwester, I’m guessing its the alkalizing agent that nearly killed you. A few times I made my own loose snus with a little water and Bruton’s Scotch. That was fine, nice and potent. Then another time I mixed in a little baking soda. Big mistake. Within seconds I was having an overload, and had to spit it all out and lay down for an hour or so. Do not try this!

_ I heard that the current pope uses snuff! _I’m still looking for proof on this. Until I read it from a credible source (I read it from another member, so no offence) I’ll take it with a grain of salt.

I did post it. Well, the only “proof” are the photos of the hand made snuff “horn” with a tin of “Kloster Andechs Spezial” being given to the pope´s brother to pass it on to him. Whether he received it, or even taken it, or is taking it on a regular basis… I clearly do not know. I´ve left that church some 17 years ago anyway, so I don´t care too much, if he takes snuff or not.
