Hey guys, All this could probably be spread out to different threads but I’ll just combine it into 1 here. First off hi I’m Dan. I’m fairly new to nasal snuff but I used to experiment with it back in Jr High School. We only have one brand and kind available for sale in stores in this area or at least that I have ever seen and that is tripsis scotch. Thank God for the Internet! I quit smoking about a year ago using a combo of snus packets and electronic cigarettes. It worked good until recently now I’m burnt out of charging the cigs and them constantly breaking down. The snus packs I’m getting sick of tasting and the breath/teeth issues. I’m ready to make the full switch to snuff which I have always enjoyed more anyways. I ran into a problem though and that is I have tried 5 flavors so far and all the ones I like stuff me up BAD. I take the sniffs like you are supposed to but any with the menthol or minty scent just blow my nose up. They will clog me up in one nostril or both will run like crazy. The kinds I tried and reaction: Tripsis- no reaction but I don’t enjoy the flavor at all. Buzz Bubble Gum- again no bad reaction but I hate the flavor. Dholakia “Blueberry” Mint- I like the flavor and it has a minor level of reaction but its still uncomfortable. I did an entire container as this is the closest I can find to a good scent that doesn’t stuff me up. Ozona cherry- I love the flavor but I have bad reactions to it. Runny or clogged nose 85% of the time. Medium level of discomfort gave it a few days and it never got better or worse. It has some menthol to it. Chief Quality Red Bull Strong Snuff- This is my absolute favorite as far as flavor and strength goes but it gives me a HORRIBLE reaction like a full blown allergy attack that goes on and on. It destroys my nose to the point where I have to take a couple days off on all snuffs to clear up. I still sneak sniffs in once in a blue moon bc I enjoy it so much aside from the side effects. Very strong menthol scent. It seems clear the mint or menthol is what causes the bad reaction as buzz and tripsis has no mint scent and I can sniff those all day long without a problem, but I don’t enjoy them. Do ALL the good types have menthol in them? Is there any favorites you have that are mint/menthol free? Any advice you have would be much appreciated. Thank you!
try a menthol that isnt made by poschl. for example hedges l260. maybe something minty but with no actual menthol (mcchrystals supermint- this is so minty it burns like a strong menthol, but may make you react differently. i enjoy SP type snuff quite a lot, non mentholated, citrusy, often refreshing. try plains, or flavours similar to snus you enjoyed, mrsnuff has a very wide selection. theres a whole world of snuffs out there. perhaps try getting an english menthol and a plain, if you dont like one, try mixing them together till you get menthol flavour you like that isnt too much for you.
Thanks but I don’t want to try my luck with any more menthol or minty snuffs. I want to try out some good flavours that have no menth to them at all. I tried searching through mrsnuff but reviews and descriptions it seems like sometimes leave out if they are mentholated or not and there is so many to read through I get overwhelmed. Are there fruity/citrusy flavours that have no menthol to them?
i suggested english because they arent oil moistened like indian/german. usually if it doesnt say its menthol, it isnt, unless you are looking at poschl or bernard. -almost forgot- medicated means menthol too.
McChrystal’s Mild Lemon is good, gosh there are so many snuffs that I just love, but it is hard to know what will float your boat. F&T Santo Domingo, Sam Gawith’s tonkin-flavored Elmos Reserve, Toque snuffs usually state menthol if it is there. So many snuffs, so little time…
Hi Dan I’m sorry you have this reaction to menthol. It is very common, you are not alone. I would suggest you stay well away from menthols for the time being and maybe give them a try again in the future (your nasal reaction to snuff changes over time). I think the best thing you can do is spend some $ and buy as wide a selection of newbie-friendly snuffs as your wallet can afford. I’ll recommend a few below, I’m sure others will also make recommendations. Toque Berwick Brown - Even though they are my favourite brand now, I would avoid the rest of the toques initially as many newbies find them hard to take. I certainly did. Berwick Brown is the exception with its lovely coarse grind and divine scent. Maybe also Camphor and Clove but I’ve heard @Roderick has changed the grind so Im not sure how newbie friendly it is. Initially it was a perfect coarse grind IMO but has since been regrounded, for shame! Just glad I bought it in bulk before it got ruined
Lots of Wilson’s of Sharrow are excellent for newbies and they’re good snuffs: Brunswick, Best Dark, Camphor & Mild, Burgundy, Gold Label, Grand Cairo, Strasbourg, Tom Buck F&T any of them except HDT and Seville as they’re hard for newbies due to fine grind. I recommend Old Paris and Princes Special. Viking are great for newbies due to their grind and great tobacco base. I’d recommend them all, especially the Dark and Brown but I also rather like the Peach. Also, strong in nicotine. Samuel Gawith offer some great snuffs but also a lot of awful ones. Give the Darks a go, like Lavendar Dark, Princes Dark, Peppermint Dark (not too minty, you might be ok with this one and it’s delightful) and any of the Kendal Browns (KBs), Black Rappee, Scotch Black, and both the SPs are lovely -SP Scotch and SP High Mill No 1 I would avoid Indian snuffs for the time being as the grinds tend to be fine and not newbie friendly. Bernard snuffs are great. These come in Tapboxes (see below) but this is ok, because they are oil based as opposed to water based. De Kralingse aka Molens snuffs are very popular and easy to take. I recommend AO1860 and A/P. There are loads of others to try but those are all safe bets and easy to take and generally highly regarded in the snuffing community. Quick note. Always buy tins, never ever ever Tapboxes for English snuffs (like Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth). . Tapboxes are evil and the snuff will be stale when you receive it. Tapboxes are those plastic things with a slide bar which reveals a hole to dispense the snuff. AVOID.
Non English Tapboxes are usually fine because they are oil based and stay fresh. Lastly, check out snuffreviews.com and spend all your free time here. Snuffhouse is the best snuffing resource on the net, not to mention the best bunch of people you’ll ever meet (excluding me, I’m a dickhead).
Wow thanks everyone I have some tough decisions to make but at least I have some ideas to work with now.
@nervousrhino What’s strange about snuff is if I go back and review my first order from Mr. Snuff there isn’t hardly a snuff I picked at the time I’d even consider buying a second time (except for WoS Extra CoC and Bernard’s Christmas flavor). As a new snuffer just blown away by the number of choices etc I bought a bunch of snuffs that were really actually bad/bizarre that no one really snuffs anyhow. So then I hung around here and read up (especially the “what’s in your nose” thread) and when I made my second order, I had picked some reputable snuffs and found some real gems. Keep at it! Like you, I generally dislike menthol, but aside from those there are fruit, floral, toasts, natural, SPs, pipe-like flavors, etc. so menthols/medicated are just one genre of many.
@nervousrhino Menthols and coarse grinds will cause my nose to run and or stuff up. This is actually a useful trait when you want to clear your nose, and by that I mean blow it all out. Taxi Red, Toques Berwick Brown, Samuel Gawith Dark Lavendar, Dark Peppermint and Viking Dark all seem to be of a coarser grind. So even these may cause some congestion or your nose to run.In my opinion they are all excellent though. I actually really enjoy the coarser grinds and especially their scents so I will sometimes endure the congestion until it passes. Medium to Fine grinds don’t seem to congest me. I think the worst is extra menthols. I love em but they are just too much of a hassle in the congestion department. I also sometimes think if I expose my nose to it long enough my body will understand it’s not a foreign invasion of alergens and will learn to not react. That has yet to be proven but I think it’s improving.
I ordered a bunch of snuff many of them based on what you guys recommended. The one kind I didn’t get but am really wishing I would have was the Bernard’s Christmas one. Here is a really stupid new guy question, what are SPs?
I listed 4 SPs under SG and Wilson’s, Gold Label, Tom Buck, SP Scotch and SP No 1 High Mill. They are easy SPs to take. Many SPs are less forgiving so I listed the tasty but easy ones. If you want to try some of the other well known but less newbie friendly SPs here’s a list Toque Original Toque SP Extra Wilson’s of Sharrow Best SP, SP 100, SP Silver, Irish High Dry Toast 20 McChrystals SP All excellellent SPs but with a finer grind. I have all of these in bulk. I hated SPs at first. Now I can’t get enough of them. Another really superb SP is J&H Wilson’s SP No1 which possibly has the finest tobacco base of any snuff I’ve ever tried. Shame they don’t offer this in bulk. I’d buy kilos, literally.
SP snuffs are scented with oil of bergamot. It is a citrus also known as etrog or citron.
citron.
I knew a dyslexic who used to drive one of those.
ABSOLUT CITRON. Always had a bottle in the freezer back when I consumed. They were some tasty squeezing’s. Welcome @nervousrhino most of the reviews I wrote on snuffreviews will state if they are beginner friendly. I could write out a long shopping list for you but you would have to sell the cow. Just buy Abraxas Cafe 11 You can stop there.
Although I like menthol snuff I find that they do cause me congestion. To prevent congestion I’ve resorted non mentholated varieties. My favourite is Viking dark. It is a moist medium grind snuff with what I would consider a high nicotine content. Very easy to take with little risk of inhaling it into ones lungs. The Viking blonde is similar in grind and moisture with less of a nicotine hit. Well worth a try.
One of the snuffs I bought was the 6 photot cheetah. I know thats bold for a new snuffer but it’s just 1 I really wanted to try. Which brings me to my next two questions: #1 How do you guys do a pinch of really dry fine snuff whithout getting a bunch of it in your throat and lungs? I know I will have to figure that out on my own but I was just wondering if you had any suggestions or would give me a walk through or suggest a link or video…whatever you got lol. Question # 2 What is the moistest snuff you know off? Even if it is too moist in your opinion. I believe I already tried the dry extreme so eventually I would like to try the moist extreme. Thank you guys btw this forum rocks.

For white snuffs, I don’t sniff at all. I hold the pinch to my nose with my mouth closed. Then I slowly part my jaw while keeping my lips sealed, like I’m suppressing a yawn. This creates just enough of a vacuum. This method doesn’t work too well with toasts if they’re still somewhat wet, honestly lately I’ve just been sniffing 'em up there, it burns but you get used to it. The wettest snuff is, I have heard, Samuel Gawith Black Rappee/London Brown (same snuff, different names). In my own personal experience schmalzers are probably the moistest.
I just got some taxi red and it looks like dip it is so moist. To do fine dry snuff it helps to be hydrated if your nose has no moisture the snuff can not stick to it.so wet your fingers and snuff some moisture in your nose blow out excess then take a big pinch with a short slow sniff.
Wow I like the wet finger tip that’s a great idea. The surpressed yawn seems a little complicated via reading it but I’m going to give it a shot. The menthols and buzz is all I have left besides the american quality scotch and for some reason buzz lost its nice aroma and now smells nasty idk why that happened but now it looks like I’m stuck with the super dry scotch is why I asked the last question. I’m stuck with it until my next order comes in I was really relying on buzz to get me by I had so much of the 25g tin left it’s all ruined now.
Btw I should add the buzz was just fine yesturday I just went to take a pinch today and it smelled horrible. I wonder if there is a way to cure it? Put some bubble gum in the tin or something lol. Doubt it.
