Hi, I used to love menthols the most, but now it seems whenever I do a menthol, my nose runs like crazy, have a sneezing fit and then get stopped up. What are some non-menthol yet cooling snuffs that maybe would not have this same effect?
I enjoy Taxi Rock spearmint and Toque peppermint at the moment…
I enjoy a lot of the spearmint snuffs myself, but there are also some others that have that tingle without menthol. A few of my favorites are: McChrystal’s- Highland Ice, Supermint, & Clove Wilson’s of Sharrow- Extra Crumbs of Comfort, Prime Minister Poschl-Spearmint, Gletscher prise, Lowen Prise
Those are all menthols, I believe, snuffegnugen. Although I can’t speak for the McChrystal’s ones, as I have not had them. Regular Crumbs of Comfort has a nice effect almost like menthol, but without it. I would try that one, if it still gives you the same effect then Taxi Rock and Toque Peppermint are good recommnedations. Samuel Gawith Afterglow is minty too. Toque Coke is kind of cooling now that I think about it.
Thanks all. I am currently snuffing some Temptation Minty Vanilla, but I was very disappointed, as it had no minty, or so small, I couldn’t find it. I added some Supermint and now it’s pretty good. I like menthols, and maybe it’s the time of year… but I did some Liquorice Ice yesterday and I was a slobbering mess.
I’ll go along with Xander, Sam’s Afterglow and Toque Peppermint are cool but not cold like the menthols.
I don’t think that Prime Minister is menthol… I haven’t had it in ages though. Highland Ice is a menthol. I love Bernard Zwifacher. It only has a tiny, tiny, touch of menthol, but it doesn’t really feel like methol, more like a slight coolness.
Yes, I have Toque Peppermint, and McChrystal’s Supermint, both I like alot. I’ve now been enjoying this Temptation Minty Vanilla, BUT only after I added some Supermint. I know I’ve repeated this a few times, but I just got it, and was disappointed that it had no discernable mint in it. I also find Dholaia Manjul to have a minty coolness. I might gives Crumbs of Compfort a try, I had a little sampler a while back… but I didn’t like it, but then I sometimes found it can be a different experience fresh from a new tin. I am thinking when a tin, esp from Wilsons says “extra” or “plus” that means menthol. Does the Camphor and Mild have menthol? What about the Aniseed Eucalyptus? Would these things maybe give me the same “negative” effects I am experiencing with menthol(which I hope will pass). I have some Camphor and Mild but haven’t tried it really yet.
@ cstokes4 Wilsons Prime Minister is very much like their Crumbs of Comfort, and so is Frederick Tranters Hobsons Choice (made by Wilsons) It’s spearmint.
Ya’ know, I am getting a nose coolness now with Dholakia Kamal. What’s in this stuff?
Camphor and Mild doesn’t have menthol it is camphor and bergamotte, very nice it is too. Stefan
I’ll do some Camphor and Mild later today, and I’ll order some Aniseed and Eucalyptus next time.
@Xander, Maybe I’m crazy but I don’t consider any of those menthols. True there is a hint of menthol in Extra Crumbs of comfort, but it’s base and overall strongest flavor is spearmint. I don’t think just because something has a hint of menthol in it, that qualifies it as menthol.
Maybe not, but I meant any menthol in it at all. Today I have been snuffing Camphot and Mild some, it’s not bad, the initial coolness dies off real quick, and then reminds me of Tom Buck.
@snuffegnugen: Dear god man, you don’t consider Glestcher-prise, a menthol? Wow, you must have a nose made of iron. Granted I don’t know much about the rest, but if the description has menthol, then its menthol. A “hint” for some can be a ample portion to others. I’m pretty sensitive to menthol myself. I little goes a long way! @tom502: yes, as far as I can tell “extra” and “plus” to Wilson’s means menthol, or more menthol. Aniseed & Eucalyptus does not have menthol, but its pretty pungent in its own right. I have to be in a special mood to enjoy aniseed and or licorice. I said once before that I thought Aniseed & Eucalyptus tasted more like fennel though (another similar herb). Kamal is nice, and its better in the nose than out. I’m not sure what it is though.
if you are looking for a cool and refreshing feeling (and a perfect scent) go for Bespoke Gin & Tonic i cant detect any menthol in there and is one of my favorites.
@Xander- I wouldn’t say I have an iron nose, but I love strong menthols. Poschl’s Red Bull, McC O&G, JIP, and WOS’s SM 500 or Extra Menthol are some of my favorites. I use Gletcher-prise when i want a break from strong menthols (since it’s columbia oil, not menthol, which seems milder to me). So, maybe I’m not the right one to be judging an appropriate level of menthols for others. However, despite being able to snort away on strong menthols, the American Scotches I’ve tried, while certainly good, are rough on me.
Scotches are indeed difficult beasts to tame. I use them more then menthols, but I think I use English style (non menthol) snuffs the most.
I don’t like menthol at all but really like Toque Peppermint. Its like snuffing candy canes!
I find HDT the best snuff for clearing the old sinuses
