Newbie (Little Sniffers) Question – What is Origin (country) of the snuffs? Being in the US and new to snuff. I’m interested in knowing what countries some of these snuff originate from. My purchases and samples are out of UK. Toque I would imagine is made in the UK. What about the other snuffs sold in the UK. Where does the snuff really come from? Dholakia Snuff Co – India Posch - ? These two get me confused Gawith. Samuel Gawith - ? Gawith Hoggarth -?
Poschl - Germany Samuel Gawith - UK Gawith Hoggarth - UK Toque - UK Wilson’s of Sharrow - UK J&H Wilson’s - UK Hedges - UK Bernhard - Germany Molens De Kralingse - Holland Taxi - South Africa Magnet - South Africa McChrystals - UK Fribourg & Treyer - UK Can’t think of anymore. Stefan
And to add to Stefans nice list. Taxi and Magnet are both Brands made by Leonard Dingler. Leonard Dingler was bought out by Swedish Match which is a swedish company located in stockholm. They make all kinds of smokeless tobacco products.
Ohh and another good example of a company making snuffs for another country is Dean Swift. They are a snuff company that makes Snuffs just for sale in the USA but the snuff is manufactured in England. I have only tried their Apricot flavors and hated it! Just cause you like Poschl’s Gawith Apricot doesn’t mean you will like plain aprioct flavored snuffs! I also treid McChrystals Apricot which wasn’t as bad but still not for me.
What a lesson here! Stupid of me, but I’m a little sniffer. What snuffs are made in America? Are there any snuffs made is Russian (Eastern Bloc) Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and so on? Also Does Tabacco grow well in the UK? What country grows the best Tabacco?
American snuffs are my favorite, I love them! You’ve got two basic kinds of snuff. Scotch snuffs, and Sweet Snuffs. Scotch snuffs are very dry and fine. The one Scotch type I tried is Rooster. It is a very strong smokey flavored tobacco. For sweet American Snuffs I have tried Navy Sweet and Railroad Checkerberry. Both great snuffs, but the Checkerberry is not like the usual. It is more moist and course then the other snuffs so that leads me to think (as well as others) that this is meant more of a lip snuff then a nasal one. Here is a list for you Kim: Rooster Dental Sweet Snuff Dental Mild Scotch Bruton Buttercup Cartharts Sweet Scotch snuff Honey Bee Navy Sweet Navy Scotch Peach Sweet Railroad Mills plain Ralphs Scotch snuff Society Sweet Square Snuff Tube rose W.E. Garrett sweet mild snuff W.E. Garrett Scotch Red Seal I’m sure there are more!
That is a lot of snuff from America. Dajawu thank you so much for coming up with this list. If there’s more hopefully someone will fill in the list.
Other American snuffs: celticsnuffer mentioned Tops but I’ll add them in the list because there are 2 styles. Tops Sweet Tops Mild Scotch Levi Garrett Scotch & Rappee Snuff DeVoe’s Eagle Scotch DeVoe’s Eagle Sweet Stokers Plain Stokers Sweet (Helme/Swisher Snuffs below) Checkerberry Strawberry Railroad Mills Maccoboy Railroad Mills Sweet Three Thistle Lady’s Choice Dixie High Toast Lorillard Star Superior And not to long ago you could still find Pearsons Red Top snuff.
Thanks Troutstroker for the additional info! WINK!
Cab anyone recommend a supplier that would ship US snuff to the UK?
There are a few more German snuff makers: Lotzbeck Brothers Ludwig Sternecker Arnold Andre (now part of Swedish Match) There are reviews by Snuff Head and me on my snuff site of various European snuffs. No American ones I’m afraid as we can’t get them here. Next job is to add a list of UK tobacconists that still carry snuff. Going to need some help from the rest of you on that one!
Afraid some of us older Americans can’t get out of the habit of thinking of Easten Europe as anyplace that was behind the Iron Curtain. BTW; are either the Gdańska or Mazurska brands still being sold in Poland?
I did mean to offend anyone. At the time that the only thing I could think of to convey the area I wanted to know about. If I’d said Europe I figure most people would have thought the popular countries we see in the US on TV. Not think areas around Russia. Sorry!
And of course these days most of the former eastern block countries are part of the EU. Some are also in NATO now. The number of Polish and Lithuanian lorries and cars we see on the roads around here means we’re unlikely to forget!
Kim- in case you haven’t seen this on the forum, here is the snuff list by manufacturer. Snuff List
I found an old newspaper article on the Polish snuff ban that also had a little info on Kashubian snuffs.
