Hi all! My names Lee and im 29 from Leicester area… Im very new to the world of snuff and did alot of research before i started and found this forum most helpful (around 99% of my info) so thanks to all. I currently take wilsons of sharrow Lemon Grove and strawberry (which is particularly morish lol). The questions i have are 1st: ive started to have a saw nose… Wen i first started id rinse my nose at the end of the night by snorting tap water which really burned and blowing my nose very hard then using tissue paper. I did this for a week and my suspicion is that this process is the culprit of my rawness so stopped lastnite but now wen ever i snuff its quite painful. Should i lay off a few days? Or will it settle itself now ive stopped rinising even if i carry on snuffing? Cant get the hang of the pinch so bought a bullet which i find delivers the perfect portion to the back of my hand and with a gentle sniff allows me to take it nicely keeping it in the lower of my nose… What do you guys think of bullets?? Also 2nd: could anyone recomend some nice snuffs/brands for me to try? Dont like floral but other then im very open minded! Am very excited to be apart of this forum as no1 else i know even knows what snuff is never mind takes it! Sorry for the essay and all the questions! Lol thank you all so much for your time. Lee
Hi Lee, how long have you been using snuff? I had some irritation for the first week or two until my nose “toughened up” but after that it was no longer a problem. It just may be a matter of time until your nose is no longer sore from snuff.
Big thing is don’t use tissue paper. It WILL rub your nose raw. Invest in bandannas or hankies. Bullets are a useful tool, if used with the right grind of snuff. The pinch is simple, but takes time to get used to. Just keep working at it. Mainly work on how sharp and long your sniffs are. It makes all the difference in the world once you’ve got it down. As far as recommendations: F&T High Dry Toast, McChrystal’s Mild Lemon, J&H Wilson’s Top Mills No. 1, Toque SP Extra, WoS Tom Buck, WoS Grand Cairo, Toque Lime Toast, Toque Toast and Marmalade. I’m sure I’m forgetting some.
Hi Lee. It might not hurt to take a day or two off snuffing and let your nose heal. I’m pretty new to snuffing too and my nose can get a bit tender because I tend to over do it. A couple of pointers. Don’t use tap water to rinse your nostrils. It may have chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride or sodium which might irritate. I use nasal saline spray and every couple of days I rinse using a neti pot with a solution of filtered watered, kosher salt and baking soda. I find using a neti pot daily to be too much and tends to cause me sinus problems, though some folks swear by daily use. If you have to use tap water, I suggest boiling it for a minute and letting it cool first, then adding about half a teaspoon of non iodized salt per cup to it before sniffing it into your nose. Don’t blow your nose too hard. That could cause problems. Also, use cloth handkerchiefs if at all possible. Cloth is much kinder to the nose. I have used antibiotic salves around the outside my nostrils when they got a little chapped when I retired, and that seemed to speed healing and prevent the situation from getting worse. I like the convenience of bullets, especially when I’m out and about. I’ve been trying spoons and found I really like using them as well. I think I’ll probably use a spoon while at home, and bullets while out. I’ll leave recommendations as to what to try to others, as I am still very much in the try them all mode myself.
Agreed to much of the above. In particular, if you’re going to rinse out your sinuses, use a warm solution of salt and bicarbonate of soda - dissolve about a level teaspoon of each in a pint of warm boiled water, avoid table salt, it tends to have additives in it. Cold water straight from the tap will hurt like hell and not be as effective!
Thanks guys! Really helped… Might take a few days off just to let it settle as your right Justin the tap water really really hurt lol thanks for all your info David, will get myself a spoon and see how i get on with that but will continue practicing the pinch killeidoskope i read the pinch was the posh way to do it years ago where as the back of the hand was considered the poor persons way… Any trueth in that do you know? Lol thanks again guys will deffo invest in a hankie
@crullers about 10days to 2 weeks matey… Tho the pain is only on one nostril and is a chlorine kinda burn feeling much like when i (stupidly) snorted the tap water which is what makes me think its that which has coursed the aggravation. Im sure i’ll get there though thank youuuu!
The ‘anatomical snuff box’ and the pinch vary in opinion by snuffers. Just do what you like the most.
My first snuff spoon is actually a modified bamboo chopstick from Chinese takeout. I just flattened the wide end and shortened it a bit. Works like a charm. I’ve ordered some inexpensive salt serving spoons to see if they’ll work. This might be the start of a new obsession; the search for interesting small spoons suitable for snuff taking.
Haha! Thats brilliant! I love it! Yes sometimes its about thinking outside the box hey? Sometimes you can buy and buy and buy thinks ‘ment’ for what you want but never any good… When all the time it was right there all along! Love the chop stick! Just love it!
Welcome to the wonderful world of snuff. You have certainly found the right place to learn more about it and from other wise folks who enjoy it. As for irritation- it could be any number of things and may be completely unrelated to snuff taking. That said, many folks notice things going on with their nose more so after taking up snuff. If you are experiencing discomfort it may well be the best idea to lay off for a few days. When it comes to recommendations, each person had their own likes and dislikes. I would suggest looking at the fantastic reviews posted by Uncle Squinty on YouTube. He is entertaining and informative. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try new scents. When I first started off I was firm in saying no floral or “crazy” scents, but look at me now. Worst case is that you get a few tins and find they don’t suit you. I would suggest keeping them tucked away for a while and re-visiting them. If after this if you still don’t care for it- folks will eagerly accept them in trade or gratas.
Uncle Squinty is the man!
Hi. I would definitely recommend Sir Walter Scott’s Moro Moro, it’s moist with high nicotine level and the most wonderful taste. This one I take using the pinch, but for all others I’m starting to use the straw method described here: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7160/gadget-for-beginners/p1 It’s simply awesome
I’d recommend you to try some Bernards and moister British snuffs until you’re a little bit more seasoned, then trying Wilson’s F&T line and Indians like Dholakia and 6 Photo. Something similar was my way, but taste is wildly subjective, so I’ll only advise you not to fear straying from the beaten track and following your intuition when you place your orders. You’ll surely discover many a favorite snuff this way.
When it comes to using snuffhouse, just find a few members who like the snuffs you like and see what else they are taking too. I’ve found there are a few people here whose tastes are pretty similar to mine, except they have loads more experience. If they say something’s good, I know it’s worth a try.
Personally I find rinsing the nose unnecessary; a couple toots of a finer, drier snuff and a couple good expulsions are all it takes. But I blow my nose a couple of minutes after I use snuff so maybe that helps keeps mine clearer? Everyone is different but definitely don’t use tap-water if you have to rinse use a neti-pot or something. As for bullets I’ve never gotten into them but I know many do. I think I’m just used to taking rather large pinches haha. I usually take snuff off the back of my hand these days; for some reason my fingers will make a snuff spoil/develop off smells after a few weeks or months if I dig them around in there too much, doing them off the back of my hands avoids this (must have dirty hands!), so I use something to transfer the snuff out of the tin, unless it’s a tin of something I really really like and know I will use up fast. Snuffs to use? There are an overwhelming number out of there but if I could put in a good word for just one it would be Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original (in a 25g container - 5g tap-boxes suck for UK snuff). Mostly plain tobacco very very satisfying, I can’t describe it because it’s so natural, but one of my favorites of all the natural snuffs and certainly one of the easiest to take. It’s too coarse for a bullet though.
Welcome to the club. As others have mentioned. When it comes to aromas the choices are endless. Many times by the time you think you finally found “the one” you like. Someone tells you to try something else and you fall for that. Or maybe not. And you forget about the old friend you had. I ordered a few packs of red bull a few weeks ago. But while I was going to order it I came on here and many have suggested I try Schmalzers. Now one schmakzer is gone. The other one half way. And I hardly touched the redbull which I went crazy for when I found it in London in April. About the nose, if you don’t want to bother with hankies because your not ready to put filthy hankies in the laundry or your emarrased to take them out in public. Look for sales in Kleenex tissues. I honestly think I’d need more then one hankie a day especially if I use schmslzers. I grew up with people from a generation that still carried around a hankie but honestly I don’t see it being enough if I’m using snuff. I also started using a lot of tissues and realised that it irritates my skin under my nostrils. And then it burned if my nose got runny from snuff. When I was in England I saw Kleenex with balsam pocket packs on sale. It makes the tissue feel even smoother. I came back to the states. Checked to see if they sell them here. They don’t make it with balsam but they sell Kleenex tissues with aloe. I didn’t try it yet but I assume its the same concept. I couldn’t find the pocket packs but I found I bundle of a few boxes on walmarts website for a decent price. We ordered a few things for work so I got free shipping. And regular Kleenex is fine as well for usual use. Just go gentle when using. Blow first and then gently wipe. The best and probably only way for you to recover is to stop for a day or two. I thought I had a sinus infection but I stopped for a day and things feel much better. I think I need to learn and practice my nostril capacity techniques.
Welcome, Lee. My piece of advice is: drink enough during the days. This decreases the need to apply water straight to your nose, when your body is hydrated inside.
@CockneySparrow1141 - Lee, if you’re actually living in the Leicester area, as opposed to hailing from there but residing somewhere else, then you’re lucky to have in your neck of the woods those fine snuff purveyors McChrystal’s. Have you checked their snuffs out? - the range is smaller than some other manufacturers, but they are very good snuffs, and the grind is perfect for their snuffs being used in bullets. www.mcchrystals.co.uk Support your local industry and economy, I say…
