New to snuff

Hi folks. I am new to snuff. The fist time I tried it I was about 9 years old and my friends boyfriend was using it, he gave me a pinch. I have recently quit cigs for an e-cig to find an alternative to smoking as it was ruining my health. I don’t want to chew/dip, not too keen on receeding gums, lip cancer, and frequent spitting. I found out last night on the internet that sniffing is the least harmful so I had to give it a try. I ran out asap to a local tobacco store and picked up a can of American Snuff Peach. I gave it a try and liked it so I am going to place an order with toque next payday. I feel I should mention that in the states snuff has a reputation as the “poor mans” tobacco. In the south they use it orally. The girl who sold it to me turned her nose up when I questioned her about it and rudely asked her manager about “that stuff”. All they had was sweet snuff. Peach and a couple brandy flavored. As I don’t drink I went with the peach. I only got a slight nicotine rush and it went mostly to the back of my throat as it was very dry. However the experience was pleasant. A delicate peach scent hung with me for a while. I would like to avoid the drip as I fear throat cancer, so does anyone have suggestions about the proper way to take snuff? Also how does this snuff compare to other snuffs? From what I can gather others are moist. This stuff is very dry. I would like a better rush as well. Like I said I’m new, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Happy sniffing!

P.S. There are a lot of Indian markets in the area. Does anyone know about snuff from India? My old boss used it but I wouldn’t know what to ask for.

P.P.S. I really wanted a menthol snuff. I do have some menthol crystals. Any ideas on how I could mix them?

Welcome to the forum. I’m rather new here too, but I know there’s a wealth of information on the forum, so you would have little trouble finding out any info you want. I don’t know how you would mix menthol crystals in snuff, but there are numerous menthol snuffs out there. Poschl makes popular menthol snuffs. It easy to find variety if you buy online which is what I do. Good luck and happy snuffing.

Hi Rdunnion, welcome to Snuffhouse! I’m a British snuffer so I was very interested to read that in the US snuff is considered poor mans tobacco (do you mind if I ask which state you live in?) you’ll find most snuff won’t give you a huge nicotine hit like a cigarette but some snuffs are stronger than others. I have limited experience of American snuff but I have tried Rooster and that stuff is very strong, you will get a good hit off that! It is common for dry snuff to be difficult for beginners, there is a definate art form in taking snuff and practice makes perfect. Eventually you will be able to take any kind of snuff without any ill effects but for starting out it is best to avoid dry snuffs. Toque make excellent snuff for beginners so order a few tins of those (I recommend the chocolate, cherry and coke flavours) they won’t give you a huge hit but they are good for getting used to snuff before you move onto drier ones. The same applies for the throat drip. I still get it from time to time (I have been snuffing less than three years) but not as much as I used to. There has never been a single documented case of anyone developing cancer by using snuff in the UK (sorry, I cant speak for anywhere else) although it is not entirely without risk there is no substantial evidence to suggest snuff causes cancer so I really wouldn’t worry about any drip causing cancer, it IS irritating though and not very pleasant but as I say, with experience it will get better. It may be that you are sniffing too hard, try different methods of taking the snuff (i.e pinching or sniffing from the back of your hand) and see if that helps. Also try and have a drink nearby when you use snuff in case you do get drips and you can wash the taste away only until you get more experience. As for Indian snuff Dholakia is popular, I believe one or two representatives from their company use this forum from time to time and even have offers, competitions etc I hope you visit snuffhouse often as it really is a great place to learn about snuff and meet interesting people Take care

There are plenty of reviews at snuffreviews.com to compare the Peach to everything else. Yes, that is dry and fine by most standards. I’m curious as to the brandy flavored snuff you found. Can you get some to post a pic? Let this forum be your friend, there are dozens of threads on how to best take snuff, health issues and even Indian snuffs. Use the FAQ section first, then use the Search feature. All of your questions are answered and much more you will learn. Advice to start with: sniff gently using a small pinch. Hold your breath while sniffing. Good luck!

@Lazarus I live in NJ. I adjusted the amount I sniff at one time and am more pleased with the effects of a larger pinch. I used 1 pinch, 1/2 in one nostril and 1/2 in the other for my initial try. now I tried a whole larger pinch in each nostril and feel very good right now  At what point should I blow it out? I’m getting a little stuffed up and am wondering if I’m keeping it in too long. @Xander Thx for the review site. It’s exactly what I was looking for. @tin_can Thanks for the warm regards.

@Xander Sorry I meant Scotch, not brandy. Although that would be interesting.

@rdunnion Scotch is not a snuff flavoured with whisky, it is a type of American snuff. I’m sure there are a lot more people in here that know about American snuff, I’m not one of them. Anyway, few tips for snuff beginners like you; Lazarus said to rather avoid dry and fine snuffs in the beginning, I wouldn’t second that, if you will use dry snuffs like American and most English, with time you will learn to take them without any ‘back of the throat’ hit. But there are many great moist snuffs as well - German snuffs and schmalzlers, I’m sure you’ll find all the info you need on this forum. World of snuff is massive, with many grinds and flavours.

@rdunion The best time to blow the snuff out of your nose is when your body tells you its time, if you are feeling congested up there give it a blow, usually I will take 3-4 pinches before I blow my nose but it varies from person to person

Welcome rdunion! Hope you get on with snuff, you just need to learn to control your sniffing to control the snuff intake. Actually, it’s not so difficult. You can always try mixing snuffs to find your favourite blend.

WelcomeHere is an old thread about mentholating your own!-Mat in Nebraska

@matsnuffs Thanks for the link. I did come across that thread in my search. I took a few grains of menthol crystals and crushed them to a fine powder. Then I took a little of that powder and added it to some of my peach snuff as a test. I am very pleased with the results. It was just the right amount of menthol. More of a tingle than a burn and my nose is freshed by the pinch I took. This is fun stuff. Can’t wait for payday to order a toque bundle

Which ones did you order from Toque?

I want to get Blueberry Menthol, Chocolate, Quit, Cherry, Coke, Menthol, Rose, Raspberry, Berwick Brown, and Peanut Butter.

Wow, that will be a good start for your collection! I only tried coke for the first time a few days ago and I must say its a very nice snuff indeed, it really does smell like coke

just remembered I have some camphor! I just added some to give it a kick. This is getting to be fun!

Welcome rdunnion! You will find you have less back of the throat issues when you get your Toque order as they are a lot moister than American snuff, they also aren’t as fine. There are plenty of threads on how to snuff, use the search feature. Just remember that practice makes perfect. Hope you enjoy the world of snuffing! Stefan, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England

Master Snuffhead’s technique, I believe^^^

Stick to UK snuffs if you want to avoid drip in my opinion. Over indulgence will usually lead to drip, but the oily, mentholated Poschl snuffs seem to cause an intolerable bitter drip for me even when taken in moderation.
