Hello everyone. I’m Justin. 30 year old cigar and pipe smoker. Been interested in changing over to snuff. No smoke, cheaper, don’t have to smoke outdoors, etc. Looking for a first snuff really. Just wondering if I should try the local store bought snuff first, which isn’t a big selection? Some Garrett and maybe one other kind. Or should I spend a little extra online for a few different brands and “flavors”? Any help is appreciated. I see mistersnuff has a little Newbie Sampler. Any good?
IMO for a new Snuffer you can’t go wrong with toque. They are all very user friendly and have excellent flavors. Wilson’s of sharrow is amazingly good as well. Both companies snuff is easy to take. And its hard to tell what you will like so order a variety of snuffs for example different companies, different styles, floral, plain, sp, and so on. There’s a alot to try and for everyone its different and even I am still finding different snuffs I love and/or grow on me so dive in head first and enjoy.
Your in good company here so make yourself at home
@xtremehunter82 I have to agree with @ distaind. Yes, the Starter bundle is a decent 1st time order. I does give a variety of lavors and manufacturers. As you have noticed there are a LOT of options out there. Just watch the ‘Whats in your nose’ section to get some idea of what people are using/buying. The Garrett is decent snuff, but dependeing on how fresh it is can be a little tough to start with. Wishing you a world of luck in your new ventures. We tend to be a happy/fulfilled lot on this site.
I’d suggest Viking Dark, I wish that had been my first snuff. It’s quite moist and the grind is easy to take
I’ll second the Viking Dark. Its good, powerfull, and easy to take. Excelent starter if your nicotine inclined.
Samuel Gawith: Kendal Brown Original and Peppermint Dark. Wilson’s of Sharrow: Vanilla, SP Best, Gold Label, SM, Grand Cairo, Lavender, Chocolate Orange, many others. Yes most all of the Toques, maybe not the Menthol(pretty intense, menthol-wise), Quit, or SP Extra (both more nic-potent than their others) to start with, but the fruit with menthols aren’t over-mentholated, and the others would be good too. 6 Photo: Natural, Special. Just a handful of suggestions…
Most new snuffers have the easiest time with a moist medium to coarse grind. I think the snuff being moist is the most important part. One can look at the descriptions from MrSnuff, and http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk. I think you would do well to start with any of the Samuel Gawith Kendal Browns. You could also try Samuel Gawith’s Black Rappee, which is a very moist very coarse earthy snuff. Wilsons Brunswick, is a rappee snuff that is perfumed (or it seems like a rappee to me, it’s a nice snuff anyway) Some find Samuel Gawith’s Black Rappee too coarse, but it’s one of my favorite snuffs, and the first snuff that I was introduced to 29 years ago.
I recommend Toque Camphor & Clove for a newbie. It’s very easy to take making it an excellent beginner snuff, even with poor technique it is quite difficult to get it in the back of the throat.
Make certain you don’t obtain the moist snuff in a plastic tap box, it tends to dry the snuff out. A member here sent me a sample of viking spear, which was a moist medium grind snuff scented with spearmint. So it seems all the viking snuffs are similar in moisture and grind, a very easy snuff to take.
Having recently got back into snuff after many years I would say for a sweet scent in the nose something like Wilson’s of Sharrow Cinnamon would be a good start. It has a fine-ish but not too dry grind with a gentle flavour. And of course a good old SP for a more ‘savoury’ scent, it’s hard to go wrong there with most manufacturers. I’ve got Brunswick (in my second SnuffStore order) and if I’d been starting there I’d’ve found it a bit heavy in the nose, though I do like it. If you want the scent of really good tobacco backed up with another flavour the Molen’s snuff is worth trying, my current favourite is Pompadour, which has a lovely Clove scent to it, it reminds me of an aromatic pipe tobacco that used to be favoured here in the UK - I never smoked it, but if someone walked past with a pipeful I’d breathe as much smoke in as I could as they passed by! Can’t comment on Fribourg and Treyer, Toque or many of the other manufacturers, as I haven’t tried them. Yet.
@Abraxas is snuff for the man of great taste. This will ruin your need to explore the other hundreds of snuff. It is your money so spend it on vacuum sealed tins,And any snuff that comes in glass, forget about buying British Snuffs in plastic tap boxes , And invest in storage jars to protect your stash from air.
The scotches in your store may be a little harder to take at first, but I would buy there first. Also, you’re in the right place to quickly hone technique. Hope that helps, Happy snuffing!
@xtremehunter82 I suggest you put in an order at toques website, it is a far more affordable internet purchase than other online snuff stores. they have a good 10 for 9 deal so you can sample quite a few. You should also put in an order on mr.snuff and try a variety of SG and WoS (which you can order a variety pack of), and a few Poschls such as Gletcher Prise, Lowen Prise, and Radfords Premium. I would personally recomend SG Black Coffee and SG Vanilla because they are both coarse and moist which makes them much easier to take for somone who is not very accustomed to snuffing. SG Celtic Talisman is also a moist medium grind and it is a sweet vanilla/black cherry that a lot of people enjoy, but not necessarily as an all day snuff.Otherwise you should pick which ever flavors you think you will like, also browse the forums, people like to talk about the snuffs they like and usually describe how they react to it (if it is easy to take or not) and how the scent is. Good luck and if you have any other questions or concerns just ask, we’re all here to help
