New Snuffer - It does get better, right?

Hey all. I’m a brand new snuffer, coming from a pipe/cigar background. I’m waiting on an order from Mr. Snuff to come in (aren’t we all?) but in the meantime I figured I’d get whatever I can find locally while I wait, just to try out snuff and see how I like it before I blow lots of money as I’m wont to do.

The only thing available locally was WEG Sweet. I know American snuffs are an acquired taste for some people, but after trying it, I guess I’d say I’m… unimpressed? To me it tasted like every Connecticut Broadleaf cigar I’ve had; light hay scent, bit of barnyard. Nothing special.

I’m used to smoking my pipe, so I’m used to enjoying rich scents like the smokey English blends, chocolate and cherry Aromatics, even a nutty Sir Walter Raleigh or Prince Albert. WEG Sweet was just… boring to me.

So what I’m really asking while I wait for my delivery to arrive is; the snuff gets better, right? It’s not all going to be a bland kind of tobacco scent? Sorry if I’m coming off negative, I don’t mean to, I’m just excited about snuff and this one was underwhelming to me

There are all sorts of scents/flavours - I can’t say I am particularly used to American snuffs (perhaps my only experience would be Whisky & Honey USA, if that counts…)
I can even find that blends I love one day don’t hit the same the next, depending on the weather and/or environment.

But the short answer to your question - yes, it does get better - it just just might take a little time to settle on you preferences (you might find it fluctuates a little here and there too).

Thanks for the reply, Clem! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I’m setting up a Toque order to get a bunch of different tins to try out and see what I like. Do you have any recommendations? I have a sweet tooth, so I like fruity flavors, but I also like darker, smoky tobaccos, too. Like you said, it fluctuates!

I would recommend Whisky and Honey USA, by Toque.

How do you feel about menthol? Toque have some excellent blends with varying hints of menthol: OM (Orange Menthol) is fantastic, but only if you like orange, the menthol just makes the citrus really zing.
Toque Ambrosia is, in my opinion, a beautiful mix - a rich tobacco with a burst of many sweet flavours, fruity and vanilla (I’m not going to win any awards for my descriptions); Ambrosia is an expansion on Spanish Gem, which itself is likened to something close to Juicy Fruit chewing gum.
I can’t remember right now which is which from Toque, Otto or Artisan, but they’re all by Toque (just as Snuv and FUBAR are Mr Snuff); but Fireman’s and Resolute are also very excellent offerings from Toque.

Back to menthols - Wilsons of Sharrow have some great blends: Bee M is a honey menthol to die for. They have some excellent aniseed options, but I appreciate that licorice/aniseed isn’t for everyone.
Wilsons also offer Grand Cairo, which I find to be on the sweeter side while also also offers to be on the strong side of nicotine hits.

If you like pipe blends, then Samuel Gawaith offers up snuffs based on their pipe tobaccos - Firedancer is a lovely blend.

I could probably waffle on for a bit, but might be moot if none of the above appeals.

Thanks for that! I’m not sure whether I like menthols or not, but it seems like something that would be up my alley. On one of the orders I’m waiting on I got McChrystals Highland Ice, have you ever tried it?

I was also thinking about getting Toque Ambrosia! I ended up swapping it out for Almond Toast though, I’ll have to keep my eye on that for future orders.

If you want a big menthol you could always go for Hedges L260. I usually make it my first pinch in the morning. Highland Ice is good too, but I don’t think it’s got quite the punch of Hedges.

You said you’ve got a sweet tooth, so maybe a schmalzler like Pöschl’s Schmalzler D? That’s like sniffing rich fruit cake and is very easy on the nose.

@cjm Yeah I want to try menthol but don’t want to go too strong and turn myself off of it, you know? And I actually have Schmalzler SF and A on the way but not D!

Just try as many styles and flavours as you can and you’ll find something you like. I’ve got a few reliables but what I use varies from day to day. I’ve always got something with me. As I’m travelling today I’m carrying 2 - Hedges for my sinuses and SG Original because it’s easy to take.

Good advice @cjm I made a Toque order the other day (posted it in the other thread) and I tried to get a wide variety to try. Tastes change over time so even if I don’t like something I’ll still jar it for later!

Try Dr. Vereys Plus by Samuel Gawith. That stuff packs a strong menthol tone. I love it. WoS Best SP is good, too.

I’m finding it incredible how long snuff lasts btw. My WoS tin is only 5g, I’ve spilled snuff from it twice yet it’s still got tobacco in it after six days or so fairly regularly snuffing.

@Snugar I’ll have to add Dr. Vereys Plus to the list, thanks!

Conversely, I was in awe about a post where someone had used up a fresh 20g tin just a couple of days!
Like you, my tins go a long way (maybe I can expect this to reduce over time).

On days I snuff, I try to keep to snuffing once an hour, give or take. I’m not snuffing every five minutes lol!

Hedges every morning, Thor’s Hammer each afternoon, and O&G every evening! With lots in-between.

Sounds good to me. :+1:
