Howdy,
Ten years off the RYO cigs, five years off Copenhagen, five years of cold turkey, zero tobacco use. All of the sudden, I decided I wanted to try pipes. It’s been a learning process, and a lot of fun. I smoke 3-5 bowls a week. A friend I smoke pipes with turned me onto cigars. A nice once or twice a week treat. Somehow in the midst of all this…SNUFF BEGAN! While at the tobacconist buying pipe tobacco, I picked up a tin of Silver Dollar Apricot, more for the novelty than anything. The first go was somewhat disconcerting, but there was no denying the “hit”. Very invigorating, as I find smoking cigars and pipes (no inhaling, of course) to be a rather relaxing activity.
So back to snuff. My local (40 miles away) serious tobacconist stocks a variety of Silver Dollar, but seems to have issues obtaining anything else. I have a guy (a gas station with an unbelievable selection of alcohol, cigars, and OTC type pipe tobacco) 15 miles down the road that ordered me some Silver Dollar (Natural & Original, as these two are my favorite SD snuffs) and some WE Garrett Scotch. Most of the other American Snuff brands are on backorder. Garrett seems to be considered somewhat of a “classic” that everyone should have around, and I’m excited to try it for the first time. My only beef with SD are the 5g tins. Hopefully, SD will make with a 10g tin. As a tinkerer, and DIYer, I recently made a very fine, very dry snuff from American Spirit Perique, with a dash of baking soda. Not sure if I can taste the perique. Sure can taste the Virginia though.
I’m curious if there are any other snuff takers in Arizona on this forum? Arizona is NOT online-tobacco purchase friendly, unless it’s pipes or cigars. There was a story in the local paper of a man who was sent a tax bill from the State for over $4000.00 for purchasing cigarettes online. Not sure how they found out, but there’s something like $6 million in unpaid tobacco taxes the State is trying to collect from online purchasers of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
I’ve visited Mr Snuff, and sure would like to try some of the overseas varieties of snuff, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. If anyone has any more information on tobacco import restrictions, I’d be much obliged if they could enlighten me. Also, if there is anyone making their own snuff, and or has reliable information as to commercial snuff production, I’d love to hear about that too.
Pardon the lengthy post, and please let me know if this is posted in the appropriate category.
Thanks,
Rusty
