So as many of you know I emailed WoS informing them of our communities interest in reviving some of Fribourg & Treyer’s now defunct snuffs. I received an email today from the Mill Manager of Sharrow Mills with some great news. Sharrow Mills is looking into “bringing some or all of the F+T’s back”! The message went on to ask what my thoughts or comments were regarding this and I would imagine the more comments I had from you wonderful snuffhouse members the bettter. So start posting your suggestions, comments or questions in this thread so I can email Sharrow Mills asap.

N

It would be wonderful if they made the effort to duplicate the old F&T blends as closely as possible in modern times. It would be a travesty if they just made some new blends and assigned old F&T names to them

S

How do we find out what those old blends were?

T

What are the old F&T’s?

E

Some of old ones I have tried are listed on my site.My preference would be for Masulipatam and Dieppe.

M

+1 for Masulipatam. I’ve heard it was wonderful.

J

i think a nice giftbox type thing with 3 or whatever number of new snuffs there gonna make would be a good idea . maybe a small booklet with the history of f&t snuffs included photos etc a limited edition of a few hundred …

N

I would like to see a F&T plain or SP so I’m going with Masulipatam and Dieppe

B

It would be wonderful to have all of them available as Friebourg & Treyer is about quality and luxury who would’nt like more of those two things. However many they reintroduce thats how many i will buy.

G

Wow it’s great to get all of your responses so quickly, I’ll hold off till tonight to email Wilsons back that way this discussion can get as many suggestions and comments as possible.

S

There is something special about snuffing a snuff that has the aroma’s of 200+ years ago, kind of like nasal time travel. So long as they leave the smell of open sewers out of it it all sounds good to me!

T

I’d be interested to know if they were going to use the original (or as close as possible) tobacco blends - Latakia, Cuban etc. and original (or as close as possible) natural ingredients. I’d be interested in The Mitcham Mint - there are no menthol F&Ts on the market - and the plains.List of old blends here on top25snuff

P

Yes, F&T snuffs, and the tins, are so good and, of course, it’s very “grand”. Fit for a king (and a queen) and now we can also enjoy it. I’m pretty sure WoS won’t regret bringing back the total range. Thank you so much giaach for all your trouble, hope WoS will give you a year’s supply of snuff.

C

Jeesh, I wonder if they still have the recipe to Violet Strausburg. Some very interesting snuffs on there, sadly I don’t think we will ever see most of them again.

P

Ah well Chris, you can at least get some KarooStof from South Africa. They have a new flavour called Pergamon Cigar snuff which is quite nice.

G

@Pieter Claassen “hope WoS will give you a year’s supply of snuff” God that would awesome but at the rate I’m using the stuff that would be about two 50gram tins haha

G

Here is my reply to Sharrow Mills, figured I’d share it with you guys and gals. Dave, Firstly, thank you for responding to my message so quickly, it really is wonderful what the internet has done to communication. And as they say, “Now on to business!” I have passed on the news of Sharrow Mills interest in producing more F&T snuffs to the online snuff community and I must say, it has been heard by many excited and vocal individuals. While no one, including myself, can settle on one or two snuffs in particular that we would like to see again, many members have voiced these comments and suggestions; I shall list them as follows. - A resounding number of people young and old to the snuff community have expressed their interest in creating these “new” blends as closely to the old recipes as possible; whether that be the tobacco blends, perfumes, grinds, colours etc. Now we understand that in some cases this is not possible either because the ingredients are far too costly in todays market or the fact that they are simply un-attainable. The main concern was that it would be a travesty if new blends were assigned to old F&T names. Many see Wilson’s of Sharrow and Fribourg & Treyer snuffs as micro time capsules and half the enjoyment involved in these snuffs is in the historic and nostalgic qualities or their tastes, and smells. - Secondly, of the snuffs mentioned by members many cited Masulipatam and Dieppe as two they would be interested in seeing revived. Also, the ever-mentioned Asthoroth made famous by the late Dr James Roberston Justice holds its place in the lore of F&T’s line and it too would be welcomed back. Mitcham Mint was also mentioned as the current F&T line does not contain a medicated snuff. Before I finish up this reply it must be said that I and the Snuffhouse community are truly excited and thankful that Sharrow Mills shares our interest in F&T. I look forward to hearing more about this endeavor as it unfolds and you can rest assure that whatever snuffs are produced as a result will be welcomed wholeheartedly by our community. Kindest Regards, William

B

You are a excellent writer, Giaach.

S

This is really good news. I have no suggestions, nor anything of interest to add. I just had to say that I’m chuffed WoS replied and that this idea has a fair chance of being perused.

P

A very well written letter. Well done!

P

Have you posted a copy of Wilson’s reply (to your original question) anywhere?

X

My wishlist: Dieppe Scented Etrenne Letter F Masulipatam Oronoko Patchouli Verbena**** Violet Strasbourg I’d be happy with any or all, but Verbena is my first choice.

T

Well done, giaach! Let’s hope they have some good news for us soon.

G

Thanks for the compliments, guess my English degree is paying off somewhat. Anyway I’m sorry I didn’t mention all the snuffs people mentioned. My main goal with the second letter was to get some sort of suggestion list to WoS and address the issue of following the old recipes as closely as possible. I imagine that before anything gets put into production (if it actually happens) there will be a final list of what shall be made. So stay tuned and keep adding those suggestions! Oh and PhilipS I didn’t post the original reply from Sharrow Mills but I could if everyone really wanted it.

X

@ Filek: I think Washington bought it for his wife, Martha. It was deemed a ladies’ snuff in some of the articles I’ve read, and I think I’ve also heard of Martha Washington taking snuff. I wonder how much different it was to the modern WoS Strasbourg, which to me seems to have a touch of violet in there.

P

Giaach, you have this editor’s hearty seal of approval for your writing skills. I join the chorus in saying “well done”.

N

This is really exciting news! Thanks, Giaach.

G

Just an update: As many of you know I sent a reply to Sharrow Mills on Tuesday Aug 31st and I have yet to hear back from them. Hopefully that is because they are busy creating some new F&T snuffs, or at least looking into it and are waiting to get back to me as soon as they have some solid information. I keep checking my email whenever I can whether that be on my phone or on my laptop but as soon as I hear back from them I will let all of you know.

G

Update #2: Well, I am afraid I have some unfortunate news for all you members out there. It has been almost 2 weeks since my reply to Sharrow Mills and I have yet to receive any word back from them. At this point I really don’t know what to do. Should I send another email to them? Should I just wait till October? Or should I do something else like have all of you members start sending them messages as well? Give me some feedback on this because we were all so excited to see this all work out and now it seems like the dream is dead.

P

Sometimes it takes businesses a while to get up to speed on a new idea. I say wait until October.

B

Yeah wait. Even in a small company the person will have to talk to one person who will have to talk to another before they can back to on something like this. This type of question would require a lot of people including marketing, accounting, and others. So really there is no reason to worry. Imagine if someone at sharrow told you something about this that their boss didn’t like. That would be bad for them because they’d either have to do what they said or look bad (and that is before a single legal consideration is made.) Also often times bussiness will release information when they feel it is best. Theoriticaly if they are planning on rereleaseing certain snuffs they may have a way they feel would be the best for them. Possibly announce it with a sale or with something else. I probably could have explained it better then that but I’am sure others can pick up the slack.

G

I apologize for resurrecting an old thread but still now word from Wilsons

P

@giaach, maybe all of us should write to them?

P

This makes me wonder: would a certain amount of pre-orders make it economically viable for them to craft “limited series” varieties? I mean, if we were to actually buy 10kg (or whatever the break-even is) in advance, they’d be sure to recoup the cost of recreating the line, and the rest would be profit, right?

G

@ Pieter Claassen I don’t see how it could hurt. I would imagine a more vocal demand would increase their interest

J

For god sakes I read this thread without looking at the dates and thought the whole discussion took place today. Hopefully the get back to you soon, the more variety off Snuff out there the better.

M

John8363, I did the same. Would be fantastic to have these snuffs resurrected.

P

@pgcd: Great idea about pre-ordering. It takes the risk factor out of the picture for the manufacturer. Maybe another letter, or letter-writing campaign, is in order?

G

I would suggest anyone who is interested in the revival of F&T snuffs email WOS and express the same interest that I did. It seemed to grab their attention so I would guess more letters would push the idea forward. Take some time and send them a message. http://sharrowmills-online.com/contacts/?SID=ae0843a39a7da34a0fc5b359f6e3aebf

B

Defiantly.

B

Just did. Here is what I wrote. I’ll tell anyone what response I get if any. >I just wanted to say that if you expanded the Fribourg and Treyer lines of snuff I know I would happily try each and everyone of them. As the current line is perfect except for one thing way too small not enough choice. I’ve heard that your company has many of the old receipes. Also on behalf of myself and my fellow snuffers I wonder if you could make custom orders of snuff for a one time purchase. If so how much would we need to purchase to make it worthwhile for you as a company. As it would not be hard to find fellow snuffers willing to chip in and split the cost to buy nearly any Fribourg and Treyer snuff. Of course I completely understand if this does not intrest you. Either way we will continue to buy your snuffs as they are some of the best on the market. (both wilsons and the F&T line). Personaly Royal George is my favorite snuff. Thank you much for your time and your wonderfull snuffs. Sincerely

X

Really? Royal George? …and you admit to this freely?

P

Hey!! Royal George is a superb snuff, fit for a KING!! I love it!!

P

I’ve sent an email regarding F&T to WoS just now. Will let you know if there’s any response.

B

yes royal george is an awesome snuff. I really don’t get the hate some people have towards it. I think I like the game of what excatly am I snuffing? Just noticed sandalwood in it for the first time recently.

X

I don’t hate it, its pretty nice for a dessert. I just think it ranks kind of low against about 30 other ones from Wilson. I’ve never heard anyone say its their favorite before.

A

Royal George is seasoning for snuff, a few grains in a snuff box of SP, a shady tree, a jug of wine…

B

no it’s an awesome snuff. Especialy when it’s cold out.

G

Royal George? I don’t recall that being an F&T snuff. Only kidding, but let’s stay on topic and send those buggers some more mail! Ha

J

The only F&T I’ve tried is Morlaix, and while I like the grind and texture, I find the scent to be…I don’t know…talcum-powdery? Very much like an old-school barber shop, which is to say it’s not unpleasant, just not typically something I’d expect to snuff. Then again, it was a sample decanted from a bulk drum so who’s to say it might not’ve changed along the way…

S

Also send a email yesterday, if enough people ask they just might do it.

E

I’ll send one as well, I’m still new to snuff but would love to try the old blends…

G

Thanks to all those who have sent a letter. Every bit helps and the more people express their interest, the more likely Wilsons will spend the money to make it happen.

P

To whom are these emails addressed? Sending an email from the web-page defaults (unless I’m mistaken) to the admin girl, Carol, in the sales department. The mill manager and MD both have different email addresses. It could be that, like the parable of the sower, emails sent via the web-page will fall by the wayside and not bear fruit.

S

Just received this email from Carol: Dear Sir, Thank you for your e-mail regarding the re-introduction of certain Fribourg & Treyer snuffs. In due course this will take place. We regret that timescales are uncertain but please rest assured that the process is on-going. We will post announcements on Snuffhouse.org as and when new flavours become available. With best regards, Carol Wilsons & Co. (Sharrow) Ltd. P.O. Box 32 Sharrow Mills Sheffield S11 8PL Tel: 0114 2662677 www.sharrowmills.com

M

Excellent news. Wonder how long we will have to wait?

T

I was pondering this very subject today and was about to post a new tread, but being the sensible chap I am I did a search and found this thread. I wonder if there is any more news one year on? Frankly I’d love to try any of the old blends, especially menthols and natural mixes. The ‘Kings Morning Mixture’ intrigues me,

I’m writing this with a snout full of Old Paris and getting nostalgic for the old days!

Jim

M

I opted for them to bring back Light Dutch, and many people would like to see Asthoroth return as well!  I send a message to Wilsons & Co. awhile back, and again recently.  I hope to get a reply from them soon.  Anyone can go to their site and leave them a message, the more the better!

T

Will do!

F

I am going to leave a message with Wilsons as well. I would love to sniff some Marsulipatam and Verbena, but would be happy trying anything from the old F&T inventory. Way to keep up the campaign, gents!!

F

Just fired this off to Wilsons… Dear Wilsons, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for continuing to manufacture such wonderful products. I have tried many of your snuffs and have found them all to be of very fine quality. My favorite at present is Coffee Cream. Wonderful stuff for those with a sweet tooth. Also, I am a member of the snuff enthusiast webpage, Snuffhouse. As you are likely aware, there is a campaign of sorts to entreat you into re-creating some of the old Fribourg & Treyer snuffs. As I am most interested in blends utilizing Cuban tobacco, I would be very pleased if you re-introduced Marsulipatam and an original version of Santo Domingo, both of which contained Havana tobacco as the base. I would happily purchase these in substantial quantity. However, to be quite frank, I would purchase anything from the old F&T inventory. Kindest Regards, John Fury

P

A colleague of mine used F&T Etrenne, when he was at university where smoking was not permitted on campus.  I had to tell him it was no more.  I’m using a lot of the WS SP100. Favourite WS SP.

M

Excellent!  Hope to see some more Relics return from the F&T collection .

@petersuki : Where did he get the F&T Etrenne?  Did Wilsons make this awhile back, and then stop?  Or is it a legit F&T tube from long ago?

P

I guess we are talking at least 25 years, possibly more.  He knew it was F&T.

F

@vathek…That must have been quite fun. I was smoking Lucky Strikes back in my college days and even though I quit cigs years ago, I would relish the opportunity to light one up in my old dorm room.

P

It was at a venerable Scottish institution. Not certain about the any of the dates though.

P

Would love to start my day with a pinch of King’s Morning Mixture

U

I really hope they carry ob to produce this famous F&T snuffs and widen their reange to some more of the old recipes.

J

Patchouli certainly should not have been their first new remake. Maybe they had a spy here who was seeing us woo over the Indian snuff delights. Snuffs from India smelling of patchouli are much more than just patchouli scented.

X

I suspect Patchouli and Bureau were the easiest/quickest to make and market from what they had on hand.  For P, its probably just a matter of the right base and an essential oil which they already probably had in stock.  For B its a mixture, so just mixing existing snuffs in the right proportions.  If they are committed to this F&T rebirth, then any other blends will probably require some serious labor and/or aging processes.  My guess is such things are in the works and we will get them once the blenders at Wilsons are satisfied with their own efforts.

Nonetheless, I would not discourage anyone from writing to them to keep the pressure on!

BTW: most reports I’ve read of the Bureau have seemed underwhelmed by it.  Personally, I quite enjoyed it and find that Morocco must feature heavily in the mixture, but I enjoy it more than Morocco on its own.

B

I liked bureau but compared to everything else by them it’s kinda blah.

P

Some of the problem in re-creating the old recipes may have to do with finding strains of tobacco that are adequate substitutes for leaf no longer available.  It seems to me that the vintage recipes depended more on the scent characteristics of various types of tobacco, and less on added fragrances.  Case in point: Santo Domingo.  I’ll bet it took a long time to locate and acquire just the right sort of dark, fire-cured leaf to replace the Cuban from the original recipe.

G

Interesting to see this discussion revived over the past couple weeks. Anyway, we have to also remember that snuff is still a very small market. We can’t expect a company like Wilsons to be able to fulfill all of our desires in large scale production. However large the production, a small market is tricky. They need to make money to stay a float.

J

@giaach Why not? What else does Wilsons of Sharrow do besides make snuff? All we are asking is for them to make snuffs that we (their market) find appealing. They already have some stiff competition so if they don’t take full advantage of the ownership of the Fribourg and Treyer label then it’s their loss.

T

Personally I feel there is an opportunity for them to make some excellent ‘artisan’ snuffs. I’m sure we’d all be prepared to pay more for something truly special. The fact that all the F&T range is all the same price seems a bit odd to me, looking into their history, they always charged different prices for different snuffs. I for one would pay a little extra for something like Asthroth (or as my wife said ‘They made a snuff called ass froth?!?’)

M

@Juxtaposer : I gotta agree with you there man…  Wilsons & Co. is the owner of the Fribourg and Treyer collection /  brand now, and it would definitely be their loss if they didn’t revive as much of it as they could.  That being said, I suppose they only have that one mill / place of manufacturing where they produce snuff…  But still!  As you said, what else do they do besides make snuff…?  Make snuff.

On the topic of price, I was personally very pleased to find that all of the F&T flavors were the same price.  It made it easy for me to purchase the whole collection.  Although, if they did revive some of the older snuffs, and Asthoroth was among them, and it cost more than the usual, I’d still buck up and buy it!  …but there is a limit to how much I would pay of course…

G

@Juxtaposer

All I’m saying is, while it would be nice to see some more revivals of old snuffs, we must think about Wilson’s point of view. (Or my devils advocate voice)

Let’s say they invest 5% of their revenue into producing 2 new F&T snuffs.  Let’s then say that everyone on this site buys one tin of each of the new blends to see if they like them. While they could become a success and increase sales, we could also find them a little lack luster (like Patchouli or Bureau) and refrain from buying them again.  The end result being Wilson’s is now stuck with a product that involved a serious investment and didn’t sell.

Of course this is all hypothetical but worth a thought or two.

X

Yes, a cost-benefit analysis.  However, in my earlier point I was saying that the cost side of that equation was minimal/negligable for Bureau and Patchouli. Meaning there was nothingto lose by releasing those.   If they invest more into this idea, they may be justified in asking for a hgher price.  However, the benefit side (their return on investment) is still speculative.

However, they do seem to be an innovative company and I think there is something going on behind the scenes, and we will likely see something in the near future.

T

Even if they did a “limited edition” snuff at first to TRY IT OUT I think it would be a good idea.

F&T is just plain classy IMO

M

ermtomy, I checked out your page and found the list grid of the snuffs, but no descriptions, not sure if they used to be there, but it sounded like they were.

I’d like to get more info on the old F&T’s, I could get on board with firing off an email or two as well, would love to try some more classics.

And also I like Royal George, it’s not as heady as some of the other scenteds, and it lacks musk which I just cant stomach in my nose…

S

786 The Dead Rise and Come to Me!  (thank you, A.E. Waite fans) (I’m here all week)

So…other than the Bureau and Patchouli, have they released other F&T scents?  I’m sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, my forum searches yielded naught.

It’s now four years in the future (cue theramin music and flying cars), so one might be forgiven for thinking that by now Wilson’s surely have a better idea of whether/when/which old F&T snuffs might be in the works.

Anypony with knowledge, please share it.  Thanks!

M

Thats great news. I’d like to see Marsulpitam and Etrenne, plus anything else they may wish to produce. I’m sure they will get a good response from the members here.

S

786 @mrmanos ?  No news here…did you read what I had written at all?  Or comprehend the necromantic operation in the first line?  (a real one, fwiw)
