I was just wondering if any of you had any negative aspects of nasal stuff that affect you any? Mine arn’t major at all. I love this stuff, and ever since my 1st time I did real nasal snuff, which was Jaxons Cherry Menthol, I can’t remember when, I have not gone a single day without nasal snuff usage. This stuff is just so good. Though what I find the most negative of it, is sometimes the outer of my nose gets slightly sore, not terribly, because the snuff often starts my nose to run a little, and I end up with a tissue in my hand alot, and wiping my nose. I would guess this happens to everyone. A few times before bed, I’d rub some skin lotion around the area. And after a lot of snuffing, sometimes one has the urge to, uh, well, clean house, often with “digital insertion”, and depending how vigorous one gets, that can irritate the nose a bit too, but then I’d think I’m not alone here too. Other than these slight, and I do mean very slight occasional irritants, that’s the only “negatives” I have had. Tom502
I find that too much hardcore menthol snuff (e.g. Hedges L260 and JIP) during the day will cause a lot of nose run, particularly in cold weather, and this leads to a lot of nose wiping, which leads to irritated skin. I now make sure I take non-menthols for at least half the day. Dirty hankies. They need hand washing and soaking and my other half won’t do it. That’s about it. Compared with the feeling of slowly killing myself with cigarettes, I think they’re quite minor.
After a few weeks of snuff use, the irritation from wiping and blowing my nose went away. I guess my nose just got used to it. I still have problems with my nose drying out occasionally, but nothing to stop snuffing over.
I like my hankies folded just so, so my minor down side is the time I takes to fold them.
When I first started a few months ago, I would sniff and then wipe/blow immediately. The tip of my nose got extremely chapped and sore so I was constantly using chapstick on my nose! I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t feel the nicotine, well duh…I was blowing it out right away before the snuff could work its charm! LMAO. I now only blow when it feels I need to do so and I no longer have a ‘chapped’ nose. YAY!!!
My nose ran alot and got chapped when i first started as well. It hasn’t bothered me at all for a while. I assumed my nose had became more “seasoned” Recently, for the first time in a long time, I did some ozona, and my nose started running again. My main problem is waking up in the middle of the night with a very sour throat that makes me cough and almost gag. The same thing used to happen after drinking and smoking MANY cigs. It doesn’t happen often and i’m sure I’m getting snuff in my throat due to improper technique. I also get muscle spasms in my leg, in the night. Again that’s something that used to only happen after many beers! (I don’t drink anymore) I know it has to do with dehydration, but I’m not sure if it’s snuff related.
@ Tom502: Try switching from paper tissues to cloth hankies, preferably soft cotton or silk. Once washed a few times they will be nice and soft. They are easy to find, and most of the online merchants carry a range. These are much better for wiping than paper. They are also more environmentally friendly since less bleached paper is ending up in the landfills. I only have a few right now, but will be getting more. You can’t have too many, I think. @miamimark: Do you clean or use neti pot before bed? Also, I know its hard, but don’t take a pinch before bed either. I did this for awhile, but I think its a bad idea. Also you might have sleep apnia, or might snore or breathe through your mouth when asleep. My wife started using Breathe Right strips as I couldn’t stand to hear her breathing through her mouth. There are also chin straps on the market that will hold your jaw shut. @zzedo310: I was putting chapstick or vaseline or Norwegian formula in my nose too, but only before bed. This helped until my nose got seasoned. I had a bit of blood a few times in the first few weeks. My only negatives are the post nasal drip/drainage issue. I still haven’t gotten this worked out. I guess I have to blow sooner than I want to. Also some snuffs are better than others in this regard.
The worst negative to this whole snuff thing is that I can’t stop buying snuff! I want to try them all! And this forum and Snuffreviews.com don’t help in the slightest, either. I was like this with other tobacco products; if I haven’t tried 'em all, I’ve tried something alot like it! Eh, there are worse things I could be doing.
My knit to pick is that using nasal snuff discourages me from smoking. I don’t like to bother my cilia or dry out my sinuses by smoking. I loved to smoke my fine brier and meerschaum pipes and I do miss those occasional hookah sessions. The bong is put away in a cigar box. The cigars away I care not where. A perfectly rolled reefer waiting for months now to be sparked. This obsession with snuff is to blame. I would die without it now.
If I snuff too much I get a chapped nose and also a lot of congestion. But I just look at this in the same way as too many glasses of wine would give me a hangover and too many hamburgers make me fat. Snuff is just the same - you have to treat it with a bit of respect, like all luxury items. When I was a smoker, I chain smoked and got to the point where I hated most of the cigarettes I ever lit. Snuff is just too nice to destroy by over use. For the most part I take four or five grammes a day, really enjoy it and don’t get any problems - more and it starts to get like the old cigarette syndrome. Abusing snuff can be just like abusing food, drink or smokes, IMHO. I’ve just done a really lousy night duty where I would have usually smoked like a chimney, a few pinches however and I was fine, so for me snuff is an important thing that I don’t want to ruin.
It has only taken over my brain. Although I am a pretty modererate user - a couple grams a day, at most - I have become obsessed with the world of snuff. Yes, I still chew, dip and smoke from time to time, but snuff has become the center of my tobacco world. And since I don’t have the usual constraints of a wife and family to keep me grounded, things may have got a little out of hand. I spent countless hours on-line and otherwise researching this tobacco style. I have forked out hundreds of dollars on snuff, tobaccos and related in a couple years. I plunged into into growing, harvesting, curing, aging, grinding and flavoring my own snuff. I’m hoping a few truly excellent “Artisan Snuffs” could one day become available.
It sounds like you have a full time hobby stitch. Unless it is affecting you mentally or physically, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m very much the same about things, i.e. if an interest is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. No half measures.
I got an ingrown nose hair for the first time. I don’t want to point fingers but I never got one before I started snuffing. Wow was that annoying!
I’m with you, stitch. There’s another letter in the mail with your address on it from Maui. Good luck with your garden. I have bunches of sprouts now myself, thanks. I’m looking forward to seeing the different tobacco’s growing up and going to the little heaven I have in store for them.
It’s taken over my brain too, in that I have really taken to this new hobby. I sit at the desk alot, and it has a drawer, and I have all my nasal snuffs in a flat plastic container. Snuffin’ all day. But I don’t see any negatives with it like this, it’s not illegal, it’s not big money, and it’s relatively harmless healthwise, so I go for it. Tom502
Dry weather + dry snuff = a sorry snout. Here in Palm Springs, caked (either by snuff or desert sand) and dessicated nostrils are no uncommon occurance. Even those benighted non-snuff users (the blameless and ignorant) frequently wind up with bloody noses due to the climate. Moister snuffs are easier, but still quickly dry out in the nose when it is 115+ in the shade and 10% humidity. A sinus rinse mornng and evening certainly helps. I may try a humidifier in the bedroom as well. Toasts for the Winter, medium moists for the Summer.
Have you tried menthols like Hedges or McCrystals? A lot of users find them difficult because of the greatly increased nasal secretions you get with these types. Sounds like they are made for you though.
The only negative that comes to mind is the brown spots in and occasionally around my nose. And getting bitched at for that sort of thing.
I must have done something wrong, as my post above is 3 years old, and now I can’t snuff at all hardly. The moment I snuff, I get nasal drip, then sneezes, then I am clogged all day(and night, which makes it hard to breathe and sleep).
Menthols?
