I was just wondering if any of you had any negative aspects of nasal stuff that affect you any? Mine arn’t major at all. I love this stuff, and ever since my 1st time I did real nasal snuff, which was Jaxons Cherry Menthol, I can’t remember when, I have not gone a single day without nasal snuff usage. This stuff is just so good. Though what I find the most negative of it, is sometimes the outer of my nose gets slightly sore, not terribly, because the snuff often starts my nose to run a little, and I end up with a tissue in my hand alot, and wiping my nose. I would guess this happens to everyone. A few times before bed, I’d rub some skin lotion around the area. And after a lot of snuffing, sometimes one has the urge to, uh, well, clean house, often with “digital insertion”, and depending how vigorous one gets, that can irritate the nose a bit too, but then I’d think I’m not alone here too. Other than these slight, and I do mean very slight occasional irritants, that’s the only “negatives” I have had. Tom502
I find that too much hardcore menthol snuff (e.g. Hedges L260 and JIP) during the day will cause a lot of nose run, particularly in cold weather, and this leads to a lot of nose wiping, which leads to irritated skin. I now make sure I take non-menthols for at least half the day. Dirty hankies. They need hand washing and soaking and my other half won’t do it. That’s about it. Compared with the feeling of slowly killing myself with cigarettes, I think they’re quite minor.
After a few weeks of snuff use, the irritation from wiping and blowing my nose went away. I guess my nose just got used to it. I still have problems with my nose drying out occasionally, but nothing to stop snuffing over.
I like my hankies folded just so, so my minor down side is the time I takes to fold them.
When I first started a few months ago, I would sniff and then wipe/blow immediately. The tip of my nose got extremely chapped and sore so I was constantly using chapstick on my nose! I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t feel the nicotine, well duh…I was blowing it out right away before the snuff could work its charm! LMAO. I now only blow when it feels I need to do so and I no longer have a ‘chapped’ nose. YAY!!!
My nose ran alot and got chapped when i first started as well. It hasn’t bothered me at all for a while. I assumed my nose had became more “seasoned” Recently, for the first time in a long time, I did some ozona, and my nose started running again. My main problem is waking up in the middle of the night with a very sour throat that makes me cough and almost gag. The same thing used to happen after drinking and smoking MANY cigs. It doesn’t happen often and i’m sure I’m getting snuff in my throat due to improper technique. I also get muscle spasms in my leg, in the night. Again that’s something that used to only happen after many beers! (I don’t drink anymore) I know it has to do with dehydration, but I’m not sure if it’s snuff related.
@ Tom502: Try switching from paper tissues to cloth hankies, preferably soft cotton or silk. Once washed a few times they will be nice and soft. They are easy to find, and most of the online merchants carry a range. These are much better for wiping than paper. They are also more environmentally friendly since less bleached paper is ending up in the landfills. I only have a few right now, but will be getting more. You can’t have too many, I think. @miamimark: Do you clean or use neti pot before bed? Also, I know its hard, but don’t take a pinch before bed either. I did this for awhile, but I think its a bad idea. Also you might have sleep apnia, or might snore or breathe through your mouth when asleep. My wife started using Breathe Right strips as I couldn’t stand to hear her breathing through her mouth. There are also chin straps on the market that will hold your jaw shut. @zzedo310: I was putting chapstick or vaseline or Norwegian formula in my nose too, but only before bed. This helped until my nose got seasoned. I had a bit of blood a few times in the first few weeks. My only negatives are the post nasal drip/drainage issue. I still haven’t gotten this worked out. I guess I have to blow sooner than I want to. Also some snuffs are better than others in this regard.
My knit to pick is that using nasal snuff discourages me from smoking. I don’t like to bother my cilia or dry out my sinuses by smoking. I loved to smoke my fine brier and meerschaum pipes and I do miss those occasional hookah sessions. The bong is put away in a cigar box. The cigars away I care not where. A perfectly rolled reefer waiting for months now to be sparked. This obsession with snuff is to blame. I would die without it now.
If I snuff too much I get a chapped nose and also a lot of congestion. But I just look at this in the same way as too many glasses of wine would give me a hangover and too many hamburgers make me fat. Snuff is just the same - you have to treat it with a bit of respect, like all luxury items. When I was a smoker, I chain smoked and got to the point where I hated most of the cigarettes I ever lit. Snuff is just too nice to destroy by over use. For the most part I take four or five grammes a day, really enjoy it and don’t get any problems - more and it starts to get like the old cigarette syndrome. Abusing snuff can be just like abusing food, drink or smokes, IMHO. I’ve just done a really lousy night duty where I would have usually smoked like a chimney, a few pinches however and I was fine, so for me snuff is an important thing that I don’t want to ruin.
It has only taken over my brain. Although I am a pretty modererate user - a couple grams a day, at most - I have become obsessed with the world of snuff. Yes, I still chew, dip and smoke from time to time, but snuff has become the center of my tobacco world. And since I don’t have the usual constraints of a wife and family to keep me grounded, things may have got a little out of hand. I spent countless hours on-line and otherwise researching this tobacco style. I have forked out hundreds of dollars on snuff, tobaccos and related in a couple years. I plunged into into growing, harvesting, curing, aging, grinding and flavoring my own snuff. I’m hoping a few truly excellent “Artisan Snuffs” could one day become available.
It sounds like you have a full time hobby stitch. Unless it is affecting you mentally or physically, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m very much the same about things, i.e. if an interest is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. No half measures.
I got an ingrown nose hair for the first time. I don’t want to point fingers but I never got one before I started snuffing. Wow was that annoying!
I’m with you, stitch. There’s another letter in the mail with your address on it from Maui. Good luck with your garden. I have bunches of sprouts now myself, thanks. I’m looking forward to seeing the different tobacco’s growing up and going to the little heaven I have in store for them.
It’s taken over my brain too, in that I have really taken to this new hobby. I sit at the desk alot, and it has a drawer, and I have all my nasal snuffs in a flat plastic container. Snuffin’ all day. But I don’t see any negatives with it like this, it’s not illegal, it’s not big money, and it’s relatively harmless healthwise, so I go for it. Tom502
Dry weather + dry snuff = a sorry snout. Here in Palm Springs, caked (either by snuff or desert sand) and dessicated nostrils are no uncommon occurance. Even those benighted non-snuff users (the blameless and ignorant) frequently wind up with bloody noses due to the climate. Moister snuffs are easier, but still quickly dry out in the nose when it is 115+ in the shade and 10% humidity. A sinus rinse mornng and evening certainly helps. I may try a humidifier in the bedroom as well. Toasts for the Winter, medium moists for the Summer.
Have you tried menthols like Hedges or McCrystals? A lot of users find them difficult because of the greatly increased nasal secretions you get with these types. Sounds like they are made for you though.
The only negative that comes to mind is the brown spots in and occasionally around my nose. And getting bitched at for that sort of thing.
I must have done something wrong, as my post above is 3 years old, and now I can’t snuff at all hardly. The moment I snuff, I get nasal drip, then sneezes, then I am clogged all day(and night, which makes it hard to breathe and sleep).
Menthols?
Yeah I saw that in the other thread. Are you using any medication? It’s strange to build up a reaction to something after using it for so long, it’s usually the other way round and that things calm down as you use them more.
Laundering those bandanas full of caked on snuff can be a real pain sometimes!
I can’t just run to the gas station and get a tin of good snuff when I run out. I can get scotches, yeah, but I get tired of smelling a campfire sometimes.
only snuff users lose snuff
My only negative so far is having to drive 30 miles one way for a 5g tin. And I live in the middle of nowhere, so even ordering online would take forever. :(
Negative???
HAVING TO ORDER IT FROM OVERSEAS
IT BLOWS HARD

ABRAXAS!
What @stitch said, DITTO for me and the added addiction of snuff accessories -boxes ,spoons, bottles, bullets, memorabilia, and all snuff related items antique and current.
I get through a lot of tissues. Very messy, sitting at my desk. I worry that my closest colleagues are a bit offended. No big deal, I induldge anyway.
The main problem with snuff for me is plugged sinuses. Some sais that Hedges blows nose and solves the problem, another - neti pot. But for me it doesnt work at all. Menthol and aromatics are the cause, but how can I stop from a half of F&T rotation?!
The only problem I have experienced is in using SWEET snuff. It clogs up my nose! Considering that most sweet snuffs are sweetened with Honey crystals, you can just imagine what putting Honey up yer nose would do!
The only negative I have is making a decision, What to carry in the five boxes I use away from home. While at home I will read what in your nose and visit my horde and pull out some forgotten snuff for some winding down.
My problems are TAD and the fact that I’m too cheap to buy new hankies. All of mine are white, so I keep them out of sight from others unless they are freshly bleached. It’s hard to get any colored hankies around here, so I may just have to stick with the white ones.
@dogwalla http://www.ritdye.com/ you can tie dye those handkerchiefs
@basement_shaman I never thought about tie dying them. That would be awesome! I like doing strange stuff at the office too: All black suit with bright orange/lime socks, inappropriate tie and shirt combinations, fish ties, etc. I’m heavily medicated and in marketing, so I can get away with it.
I got a bunch of cheap cheap colored hankies on amazon for practically nothing. Geography is no excuse!

I use the 18" Bandanas that come in Red or Blue Paisley. You can usually find them in most department stores in packs of 3. Fold them in quarters, then fold in thirds. Will fit nicely in yer back pocket and you’ll have enough “snot rag” to last you all day.

Only a couple hundred? Not bad at all
Nose cancer. That’s a biggie. Or like coke abuse your nose can cave in. And it’s like fertilizer for nostril hair. =))
The overwhelming desire to buy more snuff
that you can drop a cigarette and pick it up… but drop your snuff, you’re out of luck. also, the moments of embarrassment in public that come when you to like successively take enormous pinches.
I would have to say the biggest danger is addiction. Nicotine spikes can be very powerful with effective snuff use. Learning withdrawal symptoms can help even further with effectiveness. You can get on the train and not get off till it crashes! Other dangers would be unexpected reactions from ingredients in snuffs such as different tobacco types, molds, oils, strong herbals, etc. Exposure to children under eighteen can be the best way to perpetuate the future snuff culture! This I think is a negative as well.
Not since I started dressing entirely in black. The biggest negative is: PEER REACTION!
The only negative I can think of is RUNNING OUT!
The addiction factor doesn’t bother me with snuff. There are times when I become so engrossed with what I am doing that I forget to snuff or snus and I don’t have that maniacal crappy feeling that cigs gave me. I am the same way with coffee too, I like to drink it but I sometimes miss a day with no ill effects.
I am trying to figure out if its the snuff. I am on for while and off for a while snuffer but at times when I’m on I’m on until I get distracted and stop for a few months. But even when I’m off I’d snuff a few times here and there on a week end or when in the mood. Example: I found this red bull. I couldn’t let go of it. But it took three months to finish two 7g packets. I have a feeling that snuff at times is playing with my nerves system. I feel like my stomach gets iregular. Like constipation etc. Dose this make sense? Is it to much nicotine?

Too much nicotine tends to have the exact opposite effect.

While nicotine, or anything for that matter effects everyone differently, as @crullers noted- it does tend to loosen things up a bit. As for your nervous system- yes, too much nicotine can give you jitters and the like. Individual consumption rates are just that- individual. Some may use +10g a day while others just take a small pinch after a meal. Don’t measure yourself against anyone else. If you are comfortable with how much or how often you choose to use snuff, then you should be fine. The same should be said about the types, scents and brands of snuff you choose to use. What one person loathes may be your favorite- who is to say either one is “right” ? While I too had many of the same questions and dare I say trepidations when I rediscovered snuff, I found that after reading hundreds of questions and very cogent responses- the decision to use snuff is one I made. I find absolutely no negative consequences to using snuff. Is there possible health concern? absolutely, but I am ok with that. Are there social consequences? absolutely, but that too I am ok with. Just like anything else (drinking, gambling, chasing the opposite sex, driving fast or whatever makes you feel good) it is you who needs to gauge how much, how often and if by chance there is a negative to doing it, if you will continue or moderate it.
Well I’ve done my first snuff yesterday felt like pepper and I enjoyed it. I have to admit though I sniffed a very tiny amount but had a ton of boogers plop out. However I’m still getting over cigs so as of right now it’s the only minus and it may improve the farther I get from cigs and improve my technique. Made the mistake of not buying nasal spray first too
What did you take?

As you will learn- your nose will go through changes and phases. At least that’s what happens/happened with me and from reading other members posts- them too. I only used nasal spray at first and just to clear things out at the end of the day. Now I just splash a bit of water up there and give a good blow, or load up on Hedges L260 right before a hot shower. When I was a fairly regular smoker I went through cycles of sorts- I could smoke all day without issue, while other days I would only have a few and feel dreadful with heavy lungs and a cough.
What did you take?
Wilsons natural.

How long ago did you quit, Cigs? I am on day 22 and I feel great. I am, admittedly, using the patch and some F&T snuffs and I am managing remarkably well. It isn’t the nicotine I am missing it’s the habit. Like morning cig with coffee, cig while driving, cig with a beer. It helps that I am almost completely removed from all smokers and I don’t have to deal with people smoking around me.
None of us would recommend sniffing very tiny amounts! Who here would disagree?
Yeah, you gotta pack your beak with the snuff sweet treat. Lol
For all the snot, I suggest two methods: A neti pot (the bigger, the better!) http://www.neilmed.com/usa/netipot.php A NeilMed Sinus Rinse bottle. http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse\\_isotonic.php Either one can be used to flush out your nose and sinuses. The neti pot is dependent on gravity, the rinse bottle gives you a pressurized flow controlled by how hard you squeeze the bottle. Equalize the pH level of your tap water with a bit of sea salt.

Not long at all because I just " relapsed " on cigs Got a pack of newports on my lap
The only negative I have found when it comes to snuff is that when I use it, I run out and have to buy more… damn.
Another negative is running out of clean hankies! Which means wasting detergent to wash them…which means buying more detergent. And the cheap shit doesn’t clean very well. So you gotta pay premium prices for shit like Tide…ugh.
When you think you found the one you finally like even better than the one you used up until now. And then you run out of it. And try something else and now you have another favorite. I’m just wondering about what I read on here m from a few of you that “you only do a few grams a day” im wondering what a few grams is? Poschl is only 7g and as much as I think I’m using it takes me alooooong time to finish one. So or a pinch is hardly anything even if I take 20 a day or some of you eat it?
@Friendlyman, As amazing as it sounds I think the 5-10g tap boxes are meant to last a user about a week, any longer then the optimal freshness of the snuff has past.
finding time to rotate stash ,when new snuff are showing up all the time!
@Friendlyman I have to agree with @Ivan, although I can easily get through 5g a day if not more some days. In my early days of snuffing I’d go through a tap box in a week or less, so I agree thats probably their intended function. The issue is how long they have been sitting on the shelf before you get you hands on them.
Back again- its finding you absolutely love a snuff; for me its Hedges L260, and then finding something very similar, in this case McChrystal’s English menthol and being torn over sticking with your 1st love or bringing a new snuff into the relationship.
For me the only negative is that in Italy there are actually no selection of Snuff. Just some poelsch and stop.
The biggest negative is that it lasts forever and is hard to finish before it goes stale, which is wjy I keep my collection to a minimum.
The nose mud, nasty throat drip, and it freaks my wife out.
As my late father in law used to say, it gives you a second areshole.
I get it on my shirt, and my upper lip
Worrying if i have a brown edge to my nostrils or a runny nose when talking to people
The PACT act. I know we’re ok here in the States for now because we can still order online, but I don’t expect that to last.
Negative Re: Snuff. Stores rarely sell it in Arizona. Wish we had access to American snuff like in the southern US states :bz
The nose mud, nasty throat drip, and it freaks my wife out.
I have yet to suffer any of these. Perhaps its my choice in snuff and women.
Another negative is running out of clean hankies! Which means wasting detergent to wash them…which means buying more detergent. And the cheap shit doesn’t clean very well. So you gotta pay premium prices for shit like Tide…ugh.
I have recently taken to carrying about half a roll of toilet paper in the big pocket of my cargo pants. You can squash half a roll in your pocket and it doesn’t look conspicuous.
The negatives to using snuff for me: (basically my cribbing list)
I dont have much access to variety, and given the nature of snuff, I just want to try more
Unlabeled small boxes lying around in various places in my drawers which makes it too much to handle, but I still keep pouring new ones in smaller boxes.
Me having to try and hide it from my family
I do get a dry nose, even with the mentholated ones and having to wash or clean to enjoy repeat intake, or it just sits there, dry and I cant snuff more without cleaning
The fact that I keep thinking of taking snuff even when working, which is distracting
Non availability of accessories - at least in India.
@newbiesnuffer Increase your fluid intake. Not only is nicotine a diuretic, but you also use more fluids producing extra mucous. Drinking more fluids should help with your sore nose. Snuff has adversely affected my bank balance over the last few months, but I should reap the rewards over the next few years, so no real harm done there. Aside from that, the only negatives I’ve had are from certain types (acute irritation from menthol, choking on fine snuffs, acrid back drip from artisanal snuffs) and nothing universal across all snuffs. I am self conscious about my nose running, so I only use snuff moderately when out and about, or in the company of others. I consider the sight of brown snot flowing out of my snout would be unfair to others, and not something I consider in any way acceptable.
My negatives -
I always, always, regardless of which snuff, have to blow my nose a few minutes later. Which, depending on the social situation, can be awkward if you’re expelling brown snot while talking to someone; it’s very visible on a white tissue. Or, even worse, having a little brown trickle start seeping out if I don’t blow.
Some snuffs are just too messy to take while on-the-go. When I take a pinch of toast, I get as much down the front of my shirt as I do in my nose. And toast is so fine, that it doesn’t brush off easily; it streaks like paint. Or some leave my nose looking quite messy, like 6 Photo Special gets the outside of my nostrils all black which, again, is awkward if you’re having a conversation.
Most snuffs stuff me up quite badly. I have a few standbys that play nicely with me, but there’s a whole world of great ones I can’t use (including all SPs).
While the health risks seem minimal, it is true that premature wrinkling is caused by nicotine, not specifically smoke, so… there’s that.
@50ft_trad - Thanks for the advice. Does taking snuff also affect thirst in some way? I mean, earlier I used to feel like consuming more water than since using snuff. I just don’t feel that thirsty and have to remind myself to drink water. Is that only me or a common scenario with you / everyone?
Newbie, Part of the addiction I had with cigarettes when I was trying to quit was the cravings lying to me. I found myself craving a cig when I was hungry, or thirsty, or tired, or any number of other factors. I had to relearn to understand what my body was actually craving instead of just reaching for (or trying to resist) a cigarette (or NRT choice of the day). It’s common for people to confuse hunger and thirst too, and people on diets can feel really hungry when they are actually dehydrated, as the needs get confused. It’s possible you’re having similar effects with snuff. Snuff at your leisure, but if you start actually craving, try a glass of water before you snuff, eat, or whatever, and wait 10 mins before feeding your body anything else. It will help reprogramme yourself to recognise the body’s true needs. At 3% dehydrated we feel thirsty, at 12%+ we can die. By the time we feel thirst, we are 1/4 of the way to croaking. Keep on top of hydration, it’s worth the effort.
The complete list of negatives for nasal snuff for me would be the following.
-Have to import snuff into Australia, I cannot walk into a tobacconist and buy snuff.
-Occasionally not noticing a visible bit of snuff on my nose in public that I missed.
-Occasionally forgetting to bring a handkerchief with me.
-Companies having to cut some historic and great snuffs, due to bullshit politics.
-Trying one new snuff makes you want to try and buy more than 5 snuffs in return.
-Customs charging around $763 on the kg, preventing me from buying bulk.
-Another reason to hate the government because of their complete ignorance regarding snuff tobacco.
-Having to plan several weeks ahead for each next order.
-When you buy a new snuff in a sample tin, then you realize you should have bought several 25g tins.
-Snuff overload and couch lock when loading your nose with your favourates
-A new tin of my favorite snuff seems to disappear too quickly.
-The Back drip of some snuffs.
Though If I had to list the Positives I don’t really have 2 hours to type them all out.
Only negatives i’ve found is running out and having to wait for postage :P
Oh and I’ve yet to find another 23 year old whos interested
@Aamon - your list of negatives against procurement is really high, I must say, and genuine. I would be pissed. And I thought I am in a bad position. Appreciate your positive outlook despite all this.
Black or brown nose caves. unsightly if they start to run and you don’t feel it. like a nose bleed.
The social aspects can be a downer. Besides people’s opinions, it is a bit obnoxious to to be constantly touching your face/snuff/snotrags if you are around others and touching the some of the same things(doorknobs computers pinball machines). In those situations I like to use some hand sanitizer as a courtesy or just throw a snus in and wish I could snuff.
Snuffs getting too stale/dry too fast
Stores selling Snuff that’s not fresh anymore which makes it a gamble to not order from manufacturers directly
Not being able to recieve a decent, fresh Kailash after several purchases
Not that beginner friendly (I got sinusitis from some snuffs/wrong technique in the beginning)
Not really socially acceptable
No insight in exact nicotine content
No insight in nitrosamine levels
Still love it
I’m a beginner to snuff taking, but I’m thinking about packing it in. I like the snuff, but it’s battering my sinuses and giving me bad migraines. I think I have the wrong technique, but even when I breathe in slowly and hold the snuff in my nostril I’m still getting throat hits and simultaneous snuff falling out my nose which doesn’t make any sense to me.
@KillerKlown1978 - sad to hear that. Which snuff were you using? However, I feel it can be either that you need to start with a snuff which is mild for the beginner and the frequency of usage in the start. And yes, you need to find a technique you’re comfortable with (basically different snuffs have different best techniques) and it will be all be fine in a couple of weeks. In fact - snuff has caused my migraines to lessen (maybe it’s just for me) Being just five months or so into it, I had some problems in the start but when I started using easy to take snuffs it all became better. I now am able to take the fine dry variety without any issues. Why not give a try a different type of snuff - I recommend you can start with a variety like six photo kailash, super kailash and if you wish to start with non tobacco ones try Dholakia herbal. Then progress to others. I can only let you know about Indian snuffs since they’re all I’ve tried so far. All the best.
@newbiesnuffer Thanks for the advice. I’m having the trouble with Samuel Gawith’s Celtic Talisman which is a medium - course snuff. I have also tried Fribourg and Treyer Princes Special which I didn’t really have a problem with, although it had quite bad throat drip for me and I wasn’t overfond of the fragrance.
Just tried taking it from the back of my hand rather than pinching. That worked a lot better, no throat hit, not snuff falling out and WOAH lots of nicotine.
@KillerKlown1978 - Great! Keep going. And remember, in the starting few weeks, small pinches. Cheers!
Cheers @newbiesnuffer
