Need recommendations.

M

Started using snuff around Christmas last year. Have a collection of 20 different snuffs and starting to understand what i like and what i dislike.

Reading the forum a lot of the recommendations were for F&T snuffs like high dry toast and old paris. So i got those and F&T Princes special but ended up hating all of them. They just smelled so musky to me sometimes reminding me of a wet dog smell.

Also a lot of toques were recommended so i got Natural, Original and Rose the first two I really liked but the Rose just smelled like soap that had too much perfume in it. Also the toques were so dry and fine I had a hard time taking them without them going down my throat.

I also have some of the Ozona line snuffs - President, Cherry, Orange, Raspberry and love them all.

So right now I’m looking for some mentholated, fruity maybe some floral snuffs that aren’t as fine as Toque snuffs.

Any recommendations based on my findings so far?

  1. Put the F&T aside and revisit them in 6 months and/or 12 months. There is a strong chance your tastes may change over that time. 2) Check out some of the Samuel Gawith snuffs such as Kendal Brown, Toffee, Vanilla, as many of these have coarse grinds which might be easier to start with (check descriptions and reviews before ordering). Some people like their fruity snuffs, but many don’t. Their plainer varieties are very good though. 3) Florals aren’t usually a big hit with new starters, and the appreciation for them tends to come later 4) Wilsons has a couple of mentholated fruities, but they are a similar grind to the Toque’s, and may take a bit of practice. Most folks can adjust to these grinds in a relatively short period, though there are some grinds I still cannot use even though I started in 2013(?) 5) Gawith Hoggarth range might be worth you exploring too, as some of them have menthol scented stuff like Whisky, Aniseed, Spartan, and a couple of others.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.
Definitely going to take a look at Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith snuffs.

Any thoughts on McChryst’s snuffs? McCrystals’s Original Genuine seems to be a popular one too.

@maters If you’re having trouble with toque then you will probably have trouble with McChrystal’s and Wilson’s of Sharrow the grinds are similar. However, I would suggest that you work on your technique and get to where you can use these brands because it will open up a vast range of snuff for you. Use the search bar and the years of experience on the site to your advantage. There are several instructive posts about technique on the site, such as the following. http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/2305/the-pinch-how-to-take-snuff

Just about all poschl snuffs are pretty coarse and easy to take.
Also: Jaxons’, snuffstore and qws.
I’m not sure what you mean by toque being too dry and fine though? I got some toque lying around which got a beautiful texture, beautiful moisture-content and extremely easy to take.
Also, some dholakias, like roasted nuts etc is medium coarse and moist too. Very easy to take, and very yummy =).

You’re just getting started (as I’m I, I suppose) so you’re going to see a constant change in what you like and don’t like and what you’ll come back to in a few months, or what you’ll swear is the greatest thing ever but then never want to see it again.  If anyone had told me that the little pinch of Stok Peach I first had would have me sticking the awful stuff I stick up my nose now, I would have never believed them!  My “go to” these days smells like a horse stable, with a mix of hay, manure and one of my kid’s pissed pair of pants after a day or so hidden in the hamper.  Yes…I’m actually giving a real description which some people are saying “yeah, I love that!”

For fruit and menthol go Gawith Apricot and Poschl Raspberry.  Both really nice for that sort of thing.  You’ll really enjoy the fluffiness of both of those.

I make my own with Hedges.  I just add a dash of whatever, say Silver Dollar Apricot.

@Rogue In fairness to Maters, there are many Toques I find problematic. The single scent florals, St Clements, Quit and SP Extra all give me the coughs and chokes unless I have a little congestion. If I use another snuff first whichleads the sinusses to close in a little, then I can follow up with one of those afterward. Same with many Wilsons including Tom Buck. I can’t use any of those snuffs with fully open sinuses - they either fall out, or hit the throat. As a follow up pinch however, different story.

I first started out with McChrystals O&G I found it quite easy to take due to the fluffy grind. It may be on the finer size though I find the McChrystals O&G and Highland Ice has a puffed up grind making it easier to take. Even if it goes too far back its not too bad compared to others it has one of the nicest back drips tasting of earl grey tea.

I would recommend as stated before the SG and GH ranges, and also would like to add the Vikings to the list they are made by the same company though have a nice course grind and very pleasant flavors. Snuff Stores Black Magic is also a great snuff. I personally love the scents and the tobacco base of Viking and SG over GH, though I am still a long way away from trying all the GH I would like to try.

Just trying to say dont right off McChrystals just yet, maybe pick up a couple of their small sample tins on your next order if they sound like your kind of snuff.

I have the same problem with fine, dry Toques. You should try Toque USA, they are much more coarse and moist and taste really great. You will probably also like many McChrystal Snuffs, they have a great flavour and texture, very enjoyable and easy to take.

I second Viking and SG snuffs as good starters. They were my gateway snuffs, together with McC and Polsch. That said, I also found Torque the easiest snuff to take of all snuffs. Indeed many recommend them as ideal starter snuff. Everyone is different though, and you may appreciate things in different ways. One thing I do know is that my snuffing technique changed considerably over time. Snuff that I didn’t enjoy in the beginning I later came to adore, purely due to technique.

@Rogue Where would one find the Dholakia Roasted Nuts? I don’t see it on MrSnuff, and I’m not sure where else even to look for US shipping. Definitely sounds like something interesting, though!

Wow Roasted Nuts?

Try hydrating fine snuff, you will fine it much easier to take.

Poschl Jubilaums Prise is very fruity and makes a great mixer.

Poschl Schmalzler SF Sudfrucht will be right up your alley very moist, gros grind ,quite fruity

R

Ah, yes, wow roasted nuts. Not Dholakia…even though they make ot I think? Its on mrsnuff.

So an update from me. Ordered 6 sam gawith snuffs mostly fruit flavored. And now have come to a conclusion that I strongly prefer mentholated snuffs.

Most of them are pretty good, the SG Honey has a very good and fluffy texture but it lacks the menthol freshness. Also the SG Chocolate has some hard clumps which are kind of annoying. The ozona line is still my favorites especially the raspberry one.

Gonna try some Wilsons Of Sharrow mentholated snuffs next time I order.

dont throw out any of the ones you dont like. i made that mistake when i first started. you should revisit them every once in a while because your nose will change. you will end up liking some you didnt like at first. it took me over a year to start enjoying american scotches. i bought almost a dozen types and hated them all. i threw them out and now i regret it

M

Oh don’t worry I’m definitely not throwing any away.
