Need Pipe Recommendations

Hey everyone. As a former cigarette smoker, I have been using snuff to help me quit and so far it has worked wonderfully. At the same time, I want to return to my “first love”, which was the pipe. I’ve got two Missouri Meerschaum corn-cobs and only one really nice pipe (Brebbia) but I am looking for something new. I’d like to find one that’s reasonably priced, smokes well and is quality. Anyone have good experiences with certain models, makers, companies??

Peterson of Dublin are reasonably priced for a middle of the road quality pipe. Fish tale mouth piece if you please. Some like the P lip thing. Buy a estate pipe for 50 used, new from 70 to 350. 999 shape is my favorite. The Harp series is nice

Yes, Peterson’s are nice. I’d say also check out Stanwell’s, BC’s, maybe Benton’s. They all have good pipes in a reasonable price range.

Peterson was my first quality pipe, and the only big brand I have bought more of. I think the estate Petersons are a good buy.

I would have to say going to an estate pipe. A careful buyer can get a great pipe at a fraction of the cost. I would also say that brand of pipe goes with style. Each pipe maker has a pipe style that is better than the others Just a thought

If memory serves, I had some nice Dunhill pipes. I always had good luck with Yellow Bowl pipes too. (This was back in the 1980s.) Whatever you do… stay away from Dr. Grabow pipes. Don’t wanna’ be messin’ around with those filters!

Stanwell and Savinelli both make cheap pipes that smoke well. That’s a good start. Pipe preference is very personal. Save the estates and the more expensive pipes til you know what you like, you’ll save a lot of money.

Get an estate pipe from smokingpipes. They have some that are in the $50 range and I am sure they smoke well. If not, I would recommend Peterson over any of the other moderately priced pipes. Just my personal preference, but my two peterson pipes just feel more “quality” than my comparably priced Stanwells.

@howsydave I own a couple Grabows and I’ve found them to smoke just fine when you take out the filters. Not great pipes, but I’d reccomend them to someone who is a beginner that for whatever reason refuses to smoke a cob. But if you’ve got a higher price range I’d recommend Peterson pipes as well. It’s amazing how cool my 999 Killarney smokes.

I heard that Rattray’s are excellent. No personal experience but I would be interested to hear opinions because I have been offered the opportunity to stock them.

I really wish I could smoke a pipe, but those days are gone.

@ericthered We are glad you can still snuff!

If you are looking into estate pipes, vintage Kaywoodie’s can be really good for the money. I’ve got a couple from the 50’s/60’s that I really like, and you are rather guaranteed briar free of sediment as the wood is x-rayed before the pipe is made from it.

I tried Dr. Grabows without the filter but I always found them to be a pain to clean. BTW: I think that the proper spelling for “Yellow Bowl” is Yello-Bole.

@MrSnuff I have never smoked one but I hear they are good pipes. I think it would be pretty cool if you stocked them, it only makes sense that since you are located in Scotland that you would carry Scottish pipes. I’d buy one or two from you.

Why thank you. How kind.

I vaguely remember grabows filter system but I have a basket pipe that uses the balsa wood insert and would recommend them to a beginner because it does help with excessive moisture being drawn while learning how to work your pipe correctly

You get a lot of quality & bang for your $$ with Peterson and Stanwell.

have a look at the stanwell hans christion anderon’s , some of them are a bit on the pricey side BUT you do get 2 stems with them a short one that makes a nice all day pipe and the long stem that makes it in to a wazard’s pipe a.k.a a churchwarden for them so so long cool smokes at home with your feet up time!!! so too pipes for the price of one…
