I’ve had some experience with the following: W.E. Garrett Scotch Snuff W.E. Garrett Sweet Mild Snuff Fribourg & Treyer - High Dry Toast Spanish Jewel How does the Levi Garrett compare? Thanks!
The Levi is very good. It’s slightly less fine and dusty as WE. If you’re debating buying the 5.5 oz jug, just go for it! It’s a cool bottle and good snuff.
Hello Dino, I know very well WE Garrett and Levi. They are both very similars, but Levi is slightly strong and smoked and maybe a bit more grinded. For me Levi is simply SUPERIOR. Cheers to you all dear fellows!
I’ve recently had the opportunity to compare both side by side with a recent order. They’re both in a similar vein but the smoke stands out for me more with the W.E. Garrett. Yet, I’d say that they’re different enough to justify having both on hand for regular use. Of all of the plain Americans that I’ve tried so far, I’d say the W.E. is my “favorite”. That said, another that I received recently stood out for being distinct from all the others - Navy Plain Scotch Snuff. Like I said, to my nose very different than the rest. It can almost seem scented or sweetened when I take it - another to keep around for regular use and to provide some variety. Thus far of the plains (I really like them, find them distinct in someway, etc.): WE Garrett Levi Garrett Navy Rooster/Bruton I’m still assessing: Honest Dental Ralph’s Of the sweets: Tube Rose Red Seal (are clear winners) Still assessing: WE Sweet Peach Navy I should add that of the ultra-sweets, Society and Honey Bee are fine. The Rooster/Bruton, which I suspect are the same snuff under different labels, are both of a smoky variety but their smoke scent differs to my nose than the scent found in Levi, Honest and WE. I would characterize the smoke in those as “wood” and the smoke in Rooster/Bruton as “BBQ” ( a term that I’ve seen used here). My preference is with the Conwood group but the others are still a nice change of pace for variety. Now maybe someone could comment on Stoker’s plain and compare it the Conwoods?
Here’s a review of Stoker’s. It compares closest with Navy only better. Stokers
O.K. thanks for that. Sounds real good. I’ll no doubt give it a try. I find it difficult to make an accurate assessment of all these different snuffs (things change from use to use). When I first got them I couldn’t resist trying all the plains and a couple of the sweets that night. I was so wound up on nicotine that night that I dreamed I was killing dogs with my bare hands! (not really a nightmare though - more of a heroic dream) Guy told me the next day that he had vivid dreams while wearing nicotine patches at night. Why would you wear a nicotine patch at night? Doe anyone smoke or chew in their sleep? I’m not sure the best way to get a good handle on these different snuffs. Maybe commit to one and only one for a day or a week to give it a full assessment? You can’t really cleanse your palette between snuffs the way some guy tasting wine or liquor would. How do you feel about storage for these types of snuffs? They sit around on store shelves in either plastic or tin/cardboard canisters for ages and don’t seem to be any the worse for it. At most I think I might take all the small tins of plains and stick them in a canning jar together, the sweets likewise together and seal them.
Those snuffs store pretty good on their own as long as you don’t store them with something that has a strong scent that could contaminate the snuff. Just keep them out of warm/hot areas like away from sun light or away from a heat source. Also you don’t want them in an area of the house that fluctuates greatly in temperature throughout the day. To get the best handle on a particular snuff, you want to stick with it for at least a full day at the minimum. Snuff can have a slightly different scent throughout the day. With things you eat or drink having an effect. So 2 days is ideal so you can break down the average of the true scents of the snuff you pick up and narrow down the scents that were affected by something else. And certain times of the day your sense of smell works better. You can cleanse the nose palette with a neti pot. It totally flushes out the sinuses and every nook and cranny of the nasal passage.
Thanks guys! Well, I got a big can of W.E. Garrett Levi Garrett SCOTCH. First impressions: Has a bar-b-que sent at first. But, it quickly settles into a nice tobacco sent. The sent lasts longer than most snuffs. I realized that it’s the same sent as the W.E. Garrett Sweet Mild Snuff. But, it’s not sweet at all. Also, it seems less staining and cleaner than other snuffs. I know the sweet stuff was a mess. What’s a big plus for me is it’s available at the local grocery store. I don’t worry so much about spilling and wasting what’s stuck to my fingers. Over all a great everyday snuff and a great bargain.
(I’m not challenging anyone’s experience or knowledge but…) This being all so new to me, I’m reading as much as I can. Regarding these two American Scotch snuffs; Levi & WE Garrett, I thought I might like to try the Levi Garrett. Trouble is… It seems to only be available in a 5.58oz, size. That would last me more than this lifetime considering all the other snuff I have. Thinking it must be available in a smaller 1.15oz size - I called Conwood. I thought they could direct me where to buy some, and they volunteered Lil’Brown. But, but, but…, I said, “They only have it in the larger size, I’d like the smaller”, and she suggested I purchase the WE Garrett instead. Normally one might think that (when transferred to a customer service specialist) - as has happened to me in the past - they’re getting an air-filled talking head. However, this woman and I had an enjoyable conversation, and she seemed sharp, knowledgeable and very product aware. She told me that the Levi & WE Garrett were the same product - just different labels. But, I said, I’ve read to the contrary; that the Levi was perhaps a bit different in some way. She just countered, No (but in a nice way). I talked-up the resurgence of snuff… the need for increased marketing… and better consumer awareness, etc. I suggested that they might introduce the smaller size LG anyway. They have the product, the resources… “put it in a smaller can… print-up some labels… make it available to more retailers”. What can I say? And who the hell am I to say it? I’m only posting this because I was told outright that Today, the Levi & WE Garrett snuffs are - identical products. Maybe that’s not the case historically… but today… that’s what it is. Unless of course, I’m confused. Someone care to comment? or otherwise straighten me out on this. I’d like to know.
She a lie. I have both and they are very different.
Let me elaborate. I have WE Garrett and Levi Garrett that I purchased new from Lil Brown within the last 3 months. The scent and the color are different and even the grind is slightly different.
I have both. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. I can’t understand some people that have customer service jobs. Seems like most hate their job and it shows. Or they are outrite rude and ignorant. Or they are sweet as pie but feed you a line of BS and it’s hard to tell if they even realize it or they are just misinformed by their employers. I’m still trying to get any kind of service/answers from Swisher/Helme in regards to the dry snuffs mentioned on their site but seemingly not available anywhere.
They are different, not a big night & day difference. But they are different.
Sorry to bring this from the dead… Just tried W.E. scotch today. Great snuff! Very smokey, smooth, tasty. Seems like it could be a great all day snuff. My current favorite of the Conwood snuffs.
I have been dipping both the sweet and regular of the W.E. Garrett snuffs, and they are very good for that. The Bruton taste though, is my favorite. I am rather a newby myself, but I do read alot, and I have tried alot, well, maybe not as much as most here. But after nasally snuffing the quality European, and Indian, specifically labelled nasal snuffs, like Poschl, McChrystals, Dholakia, etc., I just cannot nasally use the American Snuffs, and enjoy it. I know most here like to use them nasally, but after having the real deal, and comparing them, I can only imagine the scotch snuffs for oral use. And I have been dipping them, and in that manner, is how I think they are best enjoyed, in that you get the actual taste of the blend, be it Bruton or a sweet variety. I know the beginning history of powdered tobacco began with nasal use, I guess, at least in Europe, but I think this method in America has moved to oral usage, and i think the US snuffs are blended and made with that in mind, which also led to coarser cut, and to moist snuff. I love nasal snuff, it’s a whole new world of tobacco enjoyment to me. And being able to sniff these quality nasals, like the brands listed above, is just a great treat. Nasally speaking, I can’t compare them at all with the US scotchs, as the whole thing is just different to me. But I do know, for me at least, a lip of Bruton is great. Tom502
@Tom502 We are all entitled to our preferences and opinions. If you prefer sniffing European and dipping American, nothing wrong with that. As to my preferences, I sniff both kinds, but never dip the imports. I rarely sniff the American Sweets, and when I do, it’s a very small pinch. Perhaps once your nose is a bit more seasoned, you will come to realized that a smokey nose hit of American Scotch can be very rewarding, and despite what the label says, a perfectly legitimate use of the product. A person’s taste in snuff changes over time.
_ and despite what the label says, a perfectly legitimate use of the product Exacto. I could care less if they are *currently* intended to be used orally. I enjoy them nasally, and that’s enough for me. Constantly pushing the idea that they are made solely for oral use is getting quite boring, you have made you case on multiple threads. Let it rest. A person’s taste in snuff changes over time. _This is the gospel. When I started snuffing 2 years ago, I thought the US snuffs were terrible. Now I love them, and can’t get enough of them.
cstokes, I did not mean to be argumentive about the subject of intended usage of the American Scotch Snuffs. I agree sniffing them is fine, as they are powdered tobacco, and fits it well with nasal snuff history. I will surely sniff them again at some time. Tom502
How big of a dip are you guys using on Scotches? I’ve never tried using a snuff orally.
Pesonally, i like to dip European snuffs and snuff Skoal =)) Seriously though, Americans are universal. I specfically keep a can of Red Seal in my locker at work because of this. Also because 1.15oz could last me a month if i get stuck there…please gods don’t let that happen. I recall now i have a lot of American Scotches i was positively repulsed by in the begining of my SnuffHood. The smokeyness seemed to permiate my skin and i would keep smelling it on my hands. The Sweets never bothered me, except for an unpleasent essence hours after. I should probably give them a go again, seeing i’am in a snuff rut.
