Hello. very new to snuff here and I thought that I’d ask you wise ones which direction might be enjoyable and your comments. I just love tobacco. The flavor, the smell, and the feel of it. I don’t generally enjoy adulterating it either. I never enjoyed anything other than straight chew, dip, or snus. So I started w/ American scotches as they were available locally. The shopkeeper didn’t really know anything about snuff other than the odd comments he overheard so he offered no help. I found Bruston’s to be WAY to BBQ-ey and now that I’ve been crankin’ in the Toque original I think that Garrett is even a lil too BBQ-ey. I found that McCrystals S’nuff was good flavor but lost its scent in five minutes. Toque orig and WoS best SP are great. I was thinking of trying Tom Buck (but i read that the nic is higher) and some American sweet snuffs. I would be intrigued by more of a pipe tobacco sort of taste but don’t have a clue as to what even to try. Any suggestions? Also, one last thing. Any lower nicotine snuffs? I know that sounds weird but I enjoy tobacco more than nic…or are my bumps too big? I take a pile the size of an lemon seed in each nostril and if I do that three times in say fourty minutes the nic rush is tremendous. Thanks in advance for the guidance. I don’t know any another people that have any working knowledge of snuff and from reading here I can see there is a great wealth.
Samuel Gawith makes quite a few plain tobacco snuffs. For the dark and coarse try Black Rappee, Scotch Black, and London Brown. Medium try McCombie, and the light and fine Irish D and Irish D Light.
Tom Buck is not a higher nicotine snuff it just has more of the citrus and bergamot oil flavouring that makes up a standard SP, its often called ‘strong SP’ but this refers to the flavour only. If you enjoy WoS Best SP then TB is a natural progression. For more of a pipe tobacco type taste you could try Molens Latakia. Tranters used to make a latakia as well (not sure if they still do) that was very dark and pipe tobacco like. Another dark and course snuff that has something of the pipe about it is Fribourg and Treyer Princes Mixture. Also there are the Kendal Brown snuffs that are moist, course and of a strong tobacoo flavour. Poschl snuffs are often at the lower end of the nicotine league table. There are also non-tobacco white snuffs, flavoured with menthol. You might also like to look at the Zuka brand - they do a snuff with just a hint of tobacco and mostly fruit sugar flavouring. For a more continental touch you could try the Bavarian Schmaltzer snuffs that have various fruit syrup casings that are not unlike something like a Black Cherry pipe tobacco. Snuff is not naturally akin to pipe tobacco but you can find some of a similar nature if you look around.
FYI the Zuka low tobacco snuff (Zuka Zee) has been discontinued. Northerner still has some in stock. I don’t recommend it though, as I was not impressed with it.
Ive never quite made up my mind to try Zuka, are any of the others worth the effort?
I’m recommending DeKralingse Hollandse Bolongaro, Bernards Feinster Kowener. and Taxi Blue or Red aside from the SG. If you want something not so course there is Dholakia Sparrow, Toque Natural or Quit, a few brands of dry toast snuffs, and some Americans that are milder with good tobacco notes. @ snuffster: I mainly grabbed a Zee since there won’t be any more chances to get it. I bought an extra to trade in case somebody someday wants to try it that missed out. I got the Black also, which is ok, but nothing amazing. I think its comparable to most English style menthols, but there are much better ones on the market. I have not tried the non-tobacco Akuz (amazingly that’s Zuka spelled backwards). Supposedly its an energy snuff like all the trendy energy drinks these days. I might try someday when I run out of new snuffs to try. Incidentally, Akuz now has competition from Wilson’s in the Wilson’s Sunset. Getting back on topic, Juxtaposer has some good recommendations there for plain tobacco flavors. I also agree with firstfloorfront and would add the JH Wilson Top Mill No 1 and Mullins & Westly Particular, and Samuel Gawith Blue Crest and Yellow Crest.
The first snuffs that I bought from northerner were zuka/akuz. I bought one of each. The Zee is ok, but it turns my snot green (protip: this is funny because the snuff is white as a ghost). Little to no nicotine, which is kind of self defeating, with no menthol. Smells like pine trees. The Black, it made me cough. I’ll have to revisit it. The Akuz, well… If I have no chance of a morning coffee, it’s a great substitute. Pop a snus and a quad shot of akuz and I’m shutting doors and slamming windows, as it were.
heheehee! I forgot about the colorful “discharges” lol.
Xander, you wanna talk colourful discharges, have you TRIED the akuz yet? First time I had hunter orange nose goblins, I almost sharted.
I can well imagine what it looks like. Yikes!
What, the shart or the nose goblins? AH, I’m off to bed.
Some great choices already mentioned, and I’d add that Fribourg and Treyer’s Santo Domingo always reminds me of pipe tobacco.
QWS smokers Blend/ Natural (depending on the dealer) is a great plain tobacco snuff. It is a high nicotine snuff. Right now it’s my #2 snuff.
Would it be safe to say that the above mentioned plain tobacco flavors contain no menthol? I just plain don’t enjoy menthol or mint or anything like that.
Form a quick overview, meaning I may have missed something, the only menthols mentioned were the Poschl. Most of their snuff, not counting the schmalzlers, are menthol.
If you are wanting more natural unadulterated tobacco snuffs, I would recommend: QWS Smoker’s Blend(very good and very inexpensive) Toque Natural McC S’nuff Fubar Grunt Dholakia Sparrow Rockit Naked And if you haven’t tried the toast style: F&T HDT
Yes, just to clarify, the Poschls are mentholated to one degree or another, I mentioned them purely in the context of lower nicotine (or at least easy) snuffs. But there’s not too much in it, the vast majority of medium milled snuiffs have comparable nic content.
Is there a snuff out there that has the taste of the really dark French tobaccos, like how a Gitanes cigarette would taste?
