Need a few suggestions for snuff making

Hello everyone, i enjoy making snuff out of different tobaccos. Recently i have been drying and crushing some aromatic cigar fillers and then snuffing them. I quite like it. I have heard that some of you have tried making snuffs out of different things including pipe tobacco. Im wondering what pipe tobacco would be good for snuff, even if you havnt made pipe tobacco into snuff, maybe you could recommend one that you think would make a nice snuff? Thanks. Matthew

Try G L Pease Westminister. It is a mix of Virginias, Latakia and Orientals, quite spicy. It has no added flavours so it would be a plain tobacco snuff, but I think you will find that mix will stand well on it´s own.

cool thanks, hope my local tobbaconist has it, im sure they will.

Try the blending tobaccos like Latakia & Perique. English plugs & ropes are also good.

you’re lucky my local has some dunhills

I am in the process of maturing some tobacco for grinding - the vast bulk of it is cigar material. I think any of the aromatic tobaccos would be good - I would go for something like a Forrestal Black Cherry, that would be smooth and delicous and I would suggest that if you are using some cigar tobacco would go very well. And maybe some cognac put in the mix and allowed to soak in. Nigel.

I recommend peterson’s irish oak or irish flake, and escudo navy deluxe. Erinmore might make a decent mildly scented snuff.

Hmmm… interesting notion. I have some Irish Flake on hand… we’ll see!

I would think the Irish Flake would have some real bite and nic to it. Please let us know if you try that out, I’m real curious.

@ mcosta: report back and let us know what you tried and how it turned out for you. Thanks.

ot in a way but how does the irish flake compare to the university flake one of my favorites by the way. p.s. I mean in a pipe of course

The IF is plain, dark and very strong, while the UF is not quite so strong and has a sort of ‘berry’ flavouring (but not excessively so). I find the IF just a bit too strong for every day use and I prefer the UF. Smoking Sam Gawith’s Full Virginia Flake in a Peterson Kildare 999 at the moment.

Very nice Peterson, Ermtony! Big fan of the P-Lip!

G&H Dark Flake and 1792 are the only two pipe tobaccos I get a distinct nic hit from, and that only from time to time. I thought F&T Princes was similar to and made some snuff from 25 grams of G&H Dark Flake that had dried out on me, to test the idea, and proved myself wrong. The snuff version smells nothing like any F&T, but like, Dark Flake. The aroma was a lot heavier, and just like having Dark Flake up the nose, which it was. The nic wasn’t remarkable in the ultra-fine snuff version and the whole experience left me with the impression that snuff and pipe tobacco are two different animals. And, that what makes something nic strong in the pipe tobacco world doesn’t necessarily translate to the snuff version. The PG in American aromatics, tested with some Z-50 I let dry for weeks, keeps the tobacco from getting dry enough to do any real grinding, but ends up as a goopy mosh. Caveat, I don’t know what I’m doing so others experiences may differ.

I am going to try making a knock off of “toast” using a double toasted burley from Daughters and Ryan called “two timer” I think it should be pretty close.

two timer was my favorite D&R, second was windsail platinum. I’ve often wondered if it would make a decent snuff - please let us know how it turns out.

Mgzinia@ Try the D&R Picayune as a snuff! Works well, strong as a mule. Two timer was a natural for snuff. Windsail is too bland, great for making snus though!

I just whirled up some American Spirit Perique Blend. Very much to my liking for a tobacco snuff.

I would think Samuel Gawith’s 1792 would be fascinating. Tonquin up the nose! Mmm.

I keep meaning to dry out a flake of 1792 but it’s hard to avoid filling my pipe with it when it gets to just the right level of moisture
