As a cigar smoker getting into snuff, I find I like natural snuff.  Tobacco has so many variations and nuances it’s a whole world in itself!  Also not being flavoured one can easily tell how good the tobacco is.  What do others think?

First off welcome @ausDave ,I am a big fan of natural snuff, Got some silver dollar yesterday I like that scent.

I do understand your point .and it is easy to tell when it is unflavoured (lacking in flavor). But where is the fun in that ? I think a blind folded snuff challenge is a foot ! picking out the best base tobacco.

I agree wholeheartedly. That is why I like to make my own snuffs. You can get a single barrel type snuff that way. Most manufacturers use a blend of tobaccos to create a consistent product. While very good and consistent they will never be outstandingly unrepeatable. Also mostly only basic tobacco varieties are used. Turkish, Latakia, Perique, and Thuoc Lao are some notable tobaccos worth experimenting with. There are hundreds of others for creating one of a kind snuff blends. However I do think casings and flavorings have their place in balancing or enhancing certain qualities of some tobacco. Other processes such as toasting or fermenting have their place as well.

I would call the scotch snuffs “natural snuff”.
