I’ve noticed in recent poll, that we have some long-time snuffers (>6years). So I have few questions to them: 1. How much snuff have you been taking for week? 2. Have you ever had any nasal troubles? 3. Have you had to stop snuffing for a while due to these problems? 4. How is your nose? Still in good condition or rather not?
I’m not quite at your 6 year threshold. I’ve been snuffing regularly for almost 5 years. Here’s my input. 1) I take about 15g a week, give or take. I empty a 25g tin in about 2 weeks. Sometimes 1 week, sometimes 3 weeks. Probably about 2-3g a day. Note: I do blow my nose clear and rinse with a saline bulb before bed, every night, otherwise I am sometimes stuffy in the morning. 2) One time, last winter, I wiped my nose a bit too aggressively while out snowboarding (snuffing along the way). I got a raw spot inside my nose. I can’t blame it on snuff directly… it was cold, and I wasn’t being careful. I just used too much force while wiping a couple too many times. I think I just couldn’t feel my nose, and I wiped it too hard with my hankerchief. This winter, I plan to use snus while snowboarding in the elements. I believe the Swedes know something about cold-weather tobacco use. It’s hard to use snuff with a runny nose from the cold. 3) I did stop snuffing for about 2.5 weeks after that incident (miserable!) but then my nose was back to normal. Right back at it after that, and haven’t had any trouble since. During that period, I used snus instead. While snus delivered the nicotine, it did not satisfy me in the same way that snuff does. 4) Other than that one incident, which I blame on careless/aggressive wiping more than snuff directly, my nose is absolutely fine at 4+ years of snuff taking. No problems directly related to snuff at all. Though I can’t take every snuff. Poschls make my nose swell (and sore!), and HDT makes me sneezy. Most English and American snuff agrees with me just fine. I have found that I am somewhat allergic to some Indian snuffs. (red eyes and stuffy nose when using them) Blow gently. Wipe gently. Stick with the pros. England knows how to make good snuff. I can’t even begin to describe how much more healthy I feel than I did when I was smoking cigarettes. Much, much better doesn’t even begin to describe it. If you were a smoker and are thinking about quitting for snuff, don’t hesitate for a minute. Step 1, quit the cigarettes. Step 2, worry about side effects of snuff, in the unlikely event you find any. Snuff is probably not as ‘safe’ as living in a plastic bubble, but it’s way way way better than smoking cigarettes. And it may be safer than living in a plastic bubble. Plastics have only been around 50 years. Snuff has been used for over 200 years. We’ve had more time to evaluate snuff usage. Good luck, and don’t let unfamiliarity or unpopularity confuse your risk analysis.
It depend on what type of snuff I am using. Fine dry snuff weighs less then moist and moist snuff consumption is less then a schmalzler. This changes with the season. If I am too busy to use snuff I have some other form of tobacco. Snus ,chew, dip ect. I also smoke pipes at lease 6 daily. But when I have time to snuff; the time in-between varies from 5 to 15 minutes. Some times I will use several snuffs consecutively: I empty once daily while showering; #2. I was worried once of a lump right inside my nose turned out to be a black head or a hair that could find it’s way out. any how it was gone in a few days. #3.No - tobacco is a choice I make, any consequences that may arise I will except. High Blood pressure is common with tobacco use. My blood pressure is twice the normal and it always has been. I have blood pressure and that is all that matters. I will not take medicine to control it. For me High blood pressure is my operating level and I maintain it as such.I like salt and eat all the night shade vegetable and hot sauce. #4 excellent condition for what I have purposely put up it over the last 40+ years. Snuff I won’t mention on a public forum. Can’t say the same for my teeth or should I say lack of. #5 have no fear! snuff is one of the safest forms of tobacco use >:)
I’ve been sniffing 15 - 20 g of snuff per week for quite some time now… I had all my nasal troubles BEFORE I used snuff. Since I started using it: No ear infections, No hay fever, No eustachian tube blockage. The closest thing that I’ve hat to “trouble” was caking when I was using some English snuffs. I handled this with a neti pot. My sense of smell is sharper now than it was before I started.
I’ve been snuffing for about 7 yrs and for the last 4-5 years, I have been using 40-45g a week and I have not had too many problems. Occasionally the snuff gets a bit crusty and I may rub my nose too aggressively and get a nose bleed, or my nose gets too dried out or I blow too hard and get a bleeder, also if I use to much menthol my nose will run and may get chapped from wiping. The worst I have had has been 2 nasal fungal fungal infections. These my or may not be snuff related but a little fluconazole fixed me right up. On the bright side, I suffered form pretty severe sinus migraines. Since I started integrating more menthol snuff in my rotation my headaches are almost non existent, and the ones I do get are very mild. My Dr has pointed out that the snuff doesn’t seem to be causing any issues and that my nasal passages are clearer, also the back of my throat is less irritated than she thought it would be. Best of luck Ryan
thats interesting, i find certain menthols clear a migraine atleast temporarily.
- I’d say I go through about 30g of snuff a week, give or take; it varies a lot depending on the style of snuff though, if I’m using all moist snuffs it’d probably be more like 50-60g just because they’re so much heavier. 2. Not really, occasional nosebleeds in the winter from blowing/rubbing my nose too much. At the end of the day my nose can be really congested too. 3. No though sometimes I will take a “day off” and just use dip or snus because I feel like it’s good to let the nose rest sometimes. 4. My nose is fit as a fiddle!
I quit taking snuff for a few days because my nose has been so congested lately and for the last day when I blow my nose there’s like orangeish-reddish stuff in it (sorry to be gross). I think my nose is just irritated as hell atm because for months now whenever my nose feels clogged I basically force white snuff into it by sniffing with all my might to open it up. This probably prevented my nose from healing up properly between pinches, especially since whites are so penetrating and go through your whole sinuses (when I take a pinch of white snuff I can breathe out a cloud through my mouth!).
That doesn’t sound good, horus. You’ve said you have a deviated septum in other threads. Was that a doctors conclusion? Have you thought about surgery?
Nah I don’t have a deviated septum, I think you’re thinking of someone else (or maybe I was making a joke or something? don’t remember saying it though) Nose is a lot clearer today. I mean imagine you had a spot of skin that you kept rubbing constantly for two years. It’d get chapped and sore eventually. I think that’s what happened to the inside of my nose. Especially since when my nose would be clogged, or one side would, due to the nasal cycle (turbinates expand so give your nose a break so it can heal itself from normal damage, let alone all the tobacco), I didn’t like the feeling of being congested so I’d dump out a big boxcar of Dholakia White and snort it like Tony Montana so my nose would be open again for a little bit. I’ve been doing that for months now and I think it’s just not the healthiest way to use snuff lol. Maybe I’ll try only sniffing in the “open” nostril from now on so one nostril can rest. Edit: also I didn’t start getting that little bit of blood in my snot until after I’d stopped taking snuff for about 12 hours; I think it’s part of my nose repairing itself. God I feel like such a weirdo for writing two multi-paragraph posts about blood in my snot… ha
I wouldn’t feel weird about posting about it in snuffhouse, horus. I mean really it is part and parcel of habit that these sort of things are going to get posted about, in my opinion. I have been snuffing for two years so my post won’t make the grade for the OP. I will say that since I started snuffing my previously terrible year round hayfever and dry eyes have been remarkably improved beyond that which any antihistamine product I ever bought gave. Even my voice sounds better and my singing voice has improved dramatically from exceptionally poor to probably about average. I have stopped snuffing for periods just to see the difference and things start getting worse pretty quickly. I’m not sure I would ever do it again actually because my itchy eyes make driving a little more dangerous, I’m not saying that I am swerving all over the road or anything without snuff but why make an all ready dangerous activity slightly more dangerous. For me I consider snuff to be medicinal. I would probably switch to glycogen powder mixed with menthol if I couldn’t get real snuff.
So now I’m worried about my nose again. I can feel some lump in my nasal vestibule. I’ve looked into my nose - it looks like a little swollen scar. Or a tumor. Yes, I’m a hypochondriac, but three of my three “imaginated” diseases have turned out to be true. So… I’d better see the doc - but that will be in the New Year.
