Narrowing it Down

I’ve only been snuffing about 4 months now, but I’ve reached a point where I’ve settled on my favorites and just want to buy them in bulk, if I haven’t already, and relax and enjoy them. Is this a phase that most people go through when getting into this passtime, and then go back to sampling everything under the sun again, or is this the point where most experienced snuffers eventually wind up?

I’m nearly 15 months into this and still trying to sample everything under the sun. I already know what my favorites are, but I’m still going to try them all. I might find a few more favorites along the way.

As long as you have favorites of several different styles or types. You should be able to stay interested in them. I personally need to keep a rotation going to keep my senses fresh. Just remember that tastes do change and also that new snuffs will always be available for you to try. I don’t see any reason to try every snuff under the sun except to say you did. Sitting back and relaxing with what you have is no small feat. In fact I just ordered some Dholakia White, a snuff that I believe I will not enjoy, but what if I like it? My decision to try it is based on the fact that it is a distinct type. So go ahead and chill but keep your ears open because we wouldn’t want you to miss out on the next best thing.

I guess it’s natural to narrow it down and focus on something; constant flow of changing information is actually quite stressful.

@ Xander I hear that. My problem is I keep finding stuff I DON’T like, especially stuff I thought I liked in the first place, which is why I said “narrowing it down.” I’m going to have to put together another “for trade” list. @ Juxtaposer Don’t get the wrong idea. When I said “favorites” I mean about 15 different varieties which I plan on keeping in steady rotation for as long as I can afford to. But endless combinations like Juniper/Turpentine/Toe Jam just don’t interest me that much anymore. On the other hand, I really am glad I tried the Dholakia White, which is one I would always try to keep at least 200 grams of. No doubt, it is distinctive.

We all find equilibrium of a kind eventually. For me I’ve tried 300+ snuffs, but I could narrow that down to 40-50 favorites. So, roughly 250 will not get replaced once empty. There are still hundreds more to try. One thing I would recommend, if you say you are finding more that you DON’T Like than DO like is not to trade them all off right away. I’ve made friends with some snuffs that I hated at first, and some of my first loves are now in my “cast-off” drawer. Some just take some time to get to know. I was writing reviews earlier, and reading Snuff Head’s review of Royal George. The exact same thing happend to me, really.

LHB I knew you were sitting pretty. Maybe you could show us a list of your snuff survival kit. We might find some gaps in olfactory care that you could consider filling. This subject is particularly interesting to me because I’m of the same mind now.

I think that most people new to snuff buy and buy and buy and end up with a lot of snuff that soon gets old and when used doesn’t compare to a new batch. It depends a lot on the package (F&T is one of the best around, keeps fresh for a lot of years). I used to like menthol snuffs (they where all I could get in the '70s) but I only use them rarely nowadays. I have found the ones I like most and keep some around at all times but I don’t buy in bulk. And like others said keep the ones you don’t like and try them again in the future.

@LHB. Is your quest motivated by a worry that snuff might be hard to get in the future? Not to be psychoanalytical or anything. I have the worry that I’ll be cut off from snuff and all my favorite flavors will be extinct. But I’m pretty new to this and I only have a few that I would get in bulk, starting next month. I want to try more just to be sure. I already know how fast my preferences can change. Thats why I hold on to that god awful, headache inducing, Dholakia Kamal and Ganga(no offense to fans). Anywho, I’m motivated to buy in bulk for two reasons. One, I hear that the flavor is way better. Two, fear of being cut off. Oh, and maybe Three, so I can be a post-PACT snuff peddler and make hella money.

Thread Necro! >:) I really like the fact I’ve started to settle down and focus on the snuffs I enjoy. A lot of money was spent trying a myriad of different snuffs, and I suppose now I am reaping the rewards of those endeavours. Sometimes I do wish I had some disposable income to throw around trying out many of the flavours (some of them classics) that haven’t crossed my path yet. However, on the whole, it’s just nice to be able to kick off your shoes at the end of the day, open the snuff drawer, and know that you can enjoy the rest of your evening with any one snuff or any combination in there, without encountering one that’s going to make you spend the next 20 minutes or next several pinches trying to get rid of the scent :))
