Hi all. Even though I have only posted a couple of times here, I have been following the various discussions for a little over a year or so. I always find something of interest that you all are taliking about. I don’t recall exactly where I read it, but about 6 months or so ago I came accross an article that stated that Napoleon used up to seven pounds of snuff a month. Do you all think that is even possible. I have only been snuffing about a year, so I am still new at this, but even using it on a regular basis I still barely put a dent in a 10g tin over a 2 week period.

Hi Pfrat. There are various theories; that he took handfuls and just sniffed the aroma and didn’t snuff it and that he gave a lot away. I go with the latter - it was customary in days gone by for kings, emperors etc to give gifts to favoured members of the court, its possible that he gave snuff away to his generals, soldiers etc as a sign of favour or just simply as a PR gesture. He could also simply have hoarded it. It was not uncommon for people to have collections of hundreds of pounds. The Prince Regent - contempory with Bonaparte - had so much that it was sold back to Fribourg and Treyer when he died and they had a large line in Prince’ s snuff which they sold to the public.Its possible I suppose that ordering seven pounds a month has turned into taking it through mis-translations of old French texts. As far as I know, there is nothing in all the literature that gives a precise account so we are left guessing. I think seven pounds a month is simply impossible for one user, however heavy his habit,
I can and do get through about 10gs daily but Napolean definately went up in my estimation when i read about his snuff usage, Wellington was a snuffer too so i have heard wonder how much he got through. If the battle of Waterloo was a snuff off i think the result might have been different.

@snuffson when you say it made you snort very loudly is that because you where practicing for if you are ever in a snuff-off with a general???
