Name 5 essential British snuffs to try out for a Dutch noob and where to buy them

Hello gents,

I am pretty new to the whole snuff thing. I tried the whole Dutch assortment of Poschl tobaccos and some of the Kralingse windmills (love the Latakia 1860). Now I want to experience British snuff. So please name me 5 essential British snuff tobaccos which I as a noob should try and the best place to buy them online, tin price-wise and shipping price-wise. Thank you.

@dutch_pipe_smoker: Hi Arno, I think you wanted to write Poschl, but then with the umlaut. Unfortunately characters with signs like umlauts, etc. are not working here. Otherwise everything works pretty well here.

So welcome here. I don’t know if they’re essential but I’d sure like to try the following. Think they will be on my next order.

Fribourg & Tryer, Bordeaux
Hedges L.260 ‘The Snuff’
Mullins & Westley Covent, Jocks Choice
Gawith Hoggarth Sea Breezes
Samuel Gawith Firedance
Toque Bourbon
Sir Walter Scott’s Lundy Foot

For you it would be easiest to order snuff in germany e.g. at snuffstore.de, where they happen to sell all of these.

I can think of four which I would consider the best representations of various styles and covers some different manufacturers (Wilson’s of Sharrow makes Fribourg and Treyer). Of course, just as with pipe tobacco everybody’s tastes are different but these are the ones that stand out for me.

Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original - Kendal Brown snuff is coarse, moist, and earthy.

Wilson’s of Sharrow Best S.P. - S.P. is the most popular style of snuff and this one has been made for over 200 years. Bergamot flavouring.

McChrystal’s Original and Genuine - My favourite medicated snuff.

Fribourg and Treyer High Dry Toast - Fine, dry, with a bit of nuttiness from the toasting process.

As for a fifth choice… There are so many more British snuffs out there in different styles it’s hard to recommend just one. Toque makes the best fruit snuff out there IMO so one of those would be worth a try. My favourite fruit snuff from them is St. Clements.

Mr. Snuff should have all of these snuff, mysmokingshop should have all except for the Toque.

Wilsons Grand Cairo,

Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original,

McChrystal’s Original and Genuine,

Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast,

Wilsons Best SP,

Samuel Gawith Grousemoor,

Gawith Hoggarth Sea Breezes,

Toque Berwick Brown,

Samuel Gawith Scotch Black.

Just count whichever get mentioned the most haha, I cant narrow it down, I love english snuff. I havent even included some of the more modern stuff like the rest of the toque range, and the abraxas/Sir Walter Scott stuff.

I agree with @Mynheer about ordering from Snuffstore.de. Mrsnuff can get expensive, and I dont think Mysmokingshop will ship outside the UK.

@Firestarter0: mysmokingshop ships to me in Canada so I assume they will to Netherlands.

@crullers thanks for the heads up, i checked, and they will. its just the US they wont ship to.

Thanks for the suggestions so far gents!

Viking Dark (more coarse, natural tobacco)

6 Photo Kailash (mentholated incense smell - Indian though)

Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast (a great toast representation)

Toque USA Lime or Whiskey & Honey (my favorites from Toque)

Samuel Gawith Cherry (It’s nice and easy)

These are some of my staples off the top of my head.  Welcome aboard.

I would have said go through Mr. Snuff, but it sounds like these guys know of a better source for ya.

Sir Walter Scott Havana Toast

Abraxas Cerise or Fire cured Cerise

Toque USA Whiskey & Honey

Mc Crystals Hops

Samuel Gawith SP High mill No 1.

These are the best top five IMO

*J&H Wilson - Top Mill no. 1 - A classic SP, finely milled with a light bergamot scent
*Samuel Gawith - Elmos Reserve - rich and moist with a tonquin top note
*Fribourg & Treyer - High Dry Toast - an excellent example of this unscented type
*Toque - Spanish Gem - a complex and unique scented snuff
*Wilson’s of Sharrow - Kendal Brown - one of the best versions of an English standard

Bonus recommendations:
*Viking - Dark - bold and leathery
*McChrystal’s - Mild Lemon - a fine snuff with a delicious lemon note
*Sir Walter Scott - Pontefract Priory - an artisan snuff with a hint of licorice root

I’m no expert but I have dabbled with quite a few British menthols, which I’d say is a British snuff archetype. I’d give a five star rating to:

  1. Wilsons of Sharrow Aniseed Extra - The aniseed outweighs the menthol, but just a touch
  2. McChrystal’s Original & Genuine - Lots of “medicated-ness” but other SP-type scents come through
  3. Hedge’s L260 - Pure menthol blast. Slightly metallic notes, but a must try

Other British snuffs I can’t keep my nose out of:

  1. Fribourg & Treyer Old Paris - Very unique aroma, some say leather, some say dates/figs. I get a little bit of rum or even red wine from this one as well. An expertly mixed enigma.
  2. Toque USA Whiskey & Honey (yes the name is confusing, British snuff none the less) - Finely ground nicotine wallop. Sweet, smokey scent that calls up exquisite barbecue for me. Some say this may technically be in the toast pantheon (something I have no experience with yet).

Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll enjoy!

I have ordered 6 snuff tobaccos at Mr. Snuff (They had more smaller available packages than Snuffstore.de):

  • Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original
  • Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast
  • Wilsons SP Best
  • McChrystal’s Original & Genuine
  • Toque USA Whisky & Honey
  • Wilsons Grand Cairo

Thanks again for all the recommendations!

Landgenoot, Welkom in snuifland.

Toque USA Whisky & Honey
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original
Samuel Gawith Black Rappee
Samuel Gawith Silky Dark (Viking Dark)
Samuel Gawith Blue Crest

It’s different on different people @Roderick. To me, never hallucinations or so: but a relaxed feeling in my tensionsed muscles. Makes my body loose each time I take it. As tobacco is used to be. But for some, a warning might be in place.

@Salmiak: dankjewel! Ik ben al langs geweest bij Jaap  Zit nu (na) te genieten van St. Omer 1

@Roderick: Why should I be careful with Toque USA Whisky & Honey? That strong?
