My Snuff Spoons

Ok I’m a pinch kind of guy. Yet there are times when you just need a spoon. I find that certain snuffs just don’t like to be pinched and resist it as best as they can. Either they are too fine or too course, they just do better in a spoon. Also a tin like a Fribourg & Treyer will only let you pinch for about a third of the way, then you have to figure out something else. So you can get a spoon. Sometimes you have a blcoked nostril, or two, and no matter how hard you sniff, no snuff will go in. Well, with a spoon you can kind of pour it in if you tilt your head right. Lets face it, they have a lot of great uses. Be careful when buying them on ebay though, as you have to be certain you are getting something of a decent size. Most times you will find what are actually salt spoons, which I find much too large. You can use the term “salt spoon” in searches though, also “snuff spoon”, “little spoon”, “small spoon”, “miniature spoon”, and even the somewhat questionable “coke spoon” or “cocaine spoon”. The important thing is to get the right size. Something that is slightly smaller than your nostril, I think works best. For me, that’s about a bowl diameter of 3/8 inch, or slightly less than 1 centimeter. In the photo I have included a number of objects to give you a size perspective. There’s a Patrick Collins snuff box, a ruler, and small denomination coin from the places most of you live. Sorry, somehow I got 2 Canada cents in there. Sorry also to Roam, as the smallest Croatian coin I had was 20 Lupa. Also seen is what I consider an average pinch of snuff, divided into two nostril portions. From left to right: 1) Is actually a salt spoon (pewter) from my mother’s heirloom tableware. I used this until I got the others. Now it will go back to the china cabinet. Its too soft anyway, it bent on me once. I don’t recommend pewter. 2) Is one of three identical ones I bought on ebay for $13.00 for the set. Likely they are also salt spoons. They are 800 grade silver. Since I have three, two are for sale at $5.00 each to any of you who want, just whisper me. They are pretty good, for a slightly above average size pinch. 3) Is the one available at Snuff Store, UK. This one is really handy. I actually love the chopper end more for portioning, scraping, or airing out ammonia heavy snuffs. I also got from them the little vial with an even smaller bowl spoon attached to the lid (which is not shown, but has its uses). 4) This one is my very favorite. Sterling silver, ebay $10.00. Its just the right size in every way. It holds just enough for one nostril and can even fit inside the snuff box. 5) This is more of a jewelery charm, but I took a gamble and bought a pack of 150 of these for a grand total of 99 cents! They were made of a zinc alloy in Tibet, and the shipping was only about $5.00 so I think I got a good deal. Best part is that they actually gave me 25 extra ones! Since I don’t ever need more than a handful of these, anyone who wants a one or a couple, or even three, just whisper me your address. I’ve already given away a few, but I’d gladly give away the rest to my good friends at snuffhouse.

Oh, the coins above, since they may not show clearly are counterclockwise from bottom: South African cent for Pieter, US cent, Swedish 5 öre, Canada cent, British Penny and another Canada cent to its right, Croatian 5 Lupa (silver), and 1 EU cent. Here is a close up of just the spoons:

Nice collection! That’s very generous of you, Xander.

Nice post! Very informative. I use the one from Tim, @ Snuff Store UK (it’s ridiculously affordable). Though I prefer to pinch, I wouldn’t be without that spoon. For me it’s a perfect size and I use it daily. From what it appears, my ‘average pinch size’, is exactly what I can fit in the bowl of that spoon - roughly about 1/3 the size of yours, but I usually double-up. Regards,

I love the tiny spoon you included in our trade. Makes me feel like a fancy giant

@ RobMe: and I thought I was a small pincher! I generally just take whatever I can hold in between the thumb and forefinger when I pinch it. The snuff in the photo is a bit fluffy, so it might look bigger. @leman: glad you liked it. I hope its useful to you, at least sometimes. I got the goodies you sent today, I’l let you know what I think after I try them.

WOW! The Big one! That is what I call Snuff Spoon! What kind of snuff do you take with this?

@ Lyubo: The big one is actually for salt. I don’t use it for snuff anymore. The second biggest is good for schmalzler or for transferring snuff into other containers.

He actually uses the big spoon to snuff Dholakia White.

yeah right. I want to live through the night!
