Okay, so i have been snuffing for almost 2 years… I go through phases where I snuff very heavily and where I hardly snuff at all, and even months where I don’t even touch snuff. I am a full time nicotine addict for certain, though. I originally discovered snuff after seeing a painting called “Jews Sniffing Snuff” or something of that matter, so I googled snuff and found mr.snuff, so I placed an order on a couple of different snuffs. That then lead to me ordering tons of snuff later and having little sessions where me and my friends would snuff everything I ordered, then they got into snuff and placed some big orders and we all tried quitting smoking. I successfully quit a year ago and got into vaping, along with my snuff habit. Vaping was making me feel nauseous and I couldn’t even enjoy the buzz, so I quit vaping for awhile. Now I have figured out how to vape without getting sick (I was just chain vaping 3mg all day long and it was making me anxious and nauseous.) Now i just hit my vape a few times every couple of hours and get a nice buzz, but I find myself snuffing a TON lately. I just love real tobacco and nothing can beat it. I smoke a pipe a couple times a week as well.
Now, the main reason I created this discussion. I have some questions for the veteran snuff takers and uncle squinty could not answer them to my content.
I always find myself wondering "Am I doing it right?’ when I take snuff. I say this, because I always find taking a snuff a hard thing to do correctly and its always very messy, inconvenient, and usually causes a really nasty tasting drip. I cannot pinch take any snuff other than sir walter scott’s creme de figue (which I love) but even when I pinch snuff SWS, I am really just cramming thick pinched clumps up my nose, because the grind is like dip on that stuff. Anytime I actually SNIFF up from a spoon or boxcar, the snuff always goes too far and hurts or gives me an awful drip, and no matter what method I use, there’s always at least a small mess that makes it unthinkable to snuff in public or at work, without a bathroom mirror trip. I always have to use a mirror when snuffing and I am always paranoid I have brown coming from my nose when I’m at work or school or in public. I just need to know if there’s a better way to take snuff that doesn’t go up into my sinuses and doesn’t make a mess. I LOVE SNUFFING, but I hate the inconvenience. This has always been the reason that I go off of snuff for certain amounts of time.
Have you tried the pinch? Take a pinch and roll it out as you sniff so you control the amount going up. I’ve been sniffing for years but still use this approach with toasts Coarse suffs like demi gross rappees are easy, but finer ones need finesse
@Talljim I mainly snuff bernard’s and a couple of p
Not sure why it deleted all of that huge post I replied to you with… ugh
@doggybobos, I’m afraid your message was deleted because you probabely wrote ‘poschl’ and used the propper spelling with o umlaut. This site cannot handle those characters (umlauts, accents, etc.). So best is to write as plain as possible.
Pitty we have to miss this huge post now.
@Mynheer Drat! That’s what it was…
I had the same problem @doggybobos, but mastered it after a few days effort, referring to helpful advice in the below thread: http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/10429/toast-advice#latest
@ nulliverse thanks man! I’m about to go try this method I read that you said helped you.
You’re welcome @doggybobos. Mastering toasts via the advice in that thread changed my whole approach to snuffing.
You probably shouldn’t start with toasts. A “normal” menthol is usually good because they’re somewhat moist and that helps not getting it too far back. If you don’t like menthols and prefer this or that fruit or spice you should ask around and see if somebody can recommend one of those with a good grind and moisture level for starting out.
Remember, snuff is meant to go into the nose and stay there. It shouldn’t be breathed-in. If pinching doesn’t work for you try taking it off the back of your hand. I use different techniques according to the snuff and grind. The fact you’re getting a drip is a sure sign you’re snuffing too hard and/or using the wrong technique.
After you get used to a mainstream snuff you can master toasts more evenly. If you have experienced snuffing friends they can help a lot by showing you in person. If not you can still learn, just work slowly and remember it’s not about going through as much as possible rather it’s about getting the exact amount you want for that particular snuff, placed correctly in the nose by whatever technique you prefer using.
Like eating, you often don’t feel satisfied right after you’ve had a meal. After you take a pinch in each nostril give yourself time to feel whether you have the right dose and then get into a rhythm that keeps you comfortable.
Got a link to the painting? I’d like to see what that’s all about.
@snuffbox Thank you for the reply! I have about 35 different kinds of snuff that I have ordered over the past 2 years. Mostly Bernard’s and poschl and wilsons. A few Toques and F&T, and also SWS. i love Schmalzlers, but I definitely need to get my technique down. The only ways I have been able to snuff without a drip is using a snuff spoon with a heap of snuff on it, carefully raising it into my nose and swiftly pinching my nostrils to grab the snuff off of the spoon. It can be a messy method, but it does work great without anyyyyy overshooting and it allows you to take quite big snuffs. I also have a question.
Is there like a sweet spot in your nose where the nicotine buzz begins, or will it happen as long as the snuff is anywhere in your nose? I find it hard to feel the effects of the buzz often with snuff, but I am moderately sensitive to nicotine from all other forms of tobacco (pipe, cigar, cigs, vape, etc)

My new desktop background. Thank you!
@doggybobos I think because you’re comparing snuff to inhaled forms of burning tobacco you’re not ever going to get the same sensation even though nicotene is principally involved, because the delivery mechanisms are very different and the chemistry of burning tobacco is not like the chemistry of snuff. I was never a cigarette smoker although I smoked cigars and then pipes, but I did it for the taste and not for the nicotene. I don’t find a sweet spot and I can definitely feel the nicotene in most snuffs but I don’t pay attention to it unless it’s high enough to be bothersome. Since my goal was always the enjoyment of the taste of tobacco rather than the effects, I’m probably the wrong one to ask. Some old posts by Snuffster might be helpful since he was a heavy cigarette smoker that was able to quit using snuff. I think it’s a very different angle. I still smoke a pipe occasionally and I definitely feel the effects much more than when snuffing even though most days I take snuff pretty steadily.
As far as the snuffs you seem to be taking mainstream brands that are all known quantities. Perhaps you are just trying to snuff too much in one shot. When I first started out Troutstroker told me to use a pea-sized pinch and to this day I think I use much less than that, one for each nostril. I don’t ever take large pinches, rather, I control the sense I want to get (keeping the taste going without making myself sick from the nicotene) by pacing myself.
Maybe try scaling way back on the huge snuff mountains and just get your groove going with a small pinch in each nostril, wait 10 or 15 minutes, and then try to get a rhythm going?
The painting is sort of what I expected but thankfully not as bad. It seems to me the painter had never seen any Jews. I don’t see anything Jewish in the painting, quite the contrary. There is a cross in the window, an icon of some kind on a stand, and a church steeple in the background. Along with the very foreign setting, the hairstyle and dress of the figures does not appear to be Jewish at all and it would be extremely unusual for us to stand around in the street. Our community is extremely snuff friendly, but snuff is shared in synagogue during prayers and study. I can not ever remember people standing outdoors and snuffing as in this picture. In short, this painting is about as authentic as a picture of fish sitting on web chairs in the park under some big ole live oaks!
@chefdaniel good choice. @Snuffbox I snuff for the scent and the buzz, but I would say both the same. Small amounts do not usually satisfy the craving for nicotine. I quit smoking over a year ago, but I smoke a pipe often. I definitely crave nicotine, I guess that’s why I always go heaps. However, I only do heaps when i use the shovel method which does not involve sniffing or anything, I simply just place the snuff in my nostril and pinch my nose to sweep it off of the shovel. I will try less than a pea sized amount on a boxcar and see how it works for me.
As for the painter, it is by a Czech artist, little known. The painting was finished in 1885, so maybe this is how Jews of the time in Russia looked? I’m not sure. And I’m sure the area was heavily catholic, so could explain the Christian surrounding.
@doggybobos I think small amounts will work for you if you get your rhythm going. Any more snuff in the nose than can coat the inside of the nostrils is just wasted. You get the impression you’re giving yourself more snuff but you’re not because it has no way to get the nicotene into your system. Blow it out before you take the next pinch and I think you’ll find small pinches are most effective and you’ll also totally eliminate drip unless you’re also snuffing too hard.
We were definitely not standing around in the streets in Russia in the the 1880s as it was a very bad period for us. We lived separately for most of our history and would not be found outside our towns and villages. The dress is not the dress of Russian Jews- that’s my background and I’m pretty familiar with it. I can say with confidence that it’s not an authentic painting of Jews and doesn’t portray anything remotely accurate about us. I wouldn’t be surprised if the title of the painting was changed for some reason after it was painted. Otherwise I would imagine it was painted for political purposes and didn’t have to be accurate.
I’ve found Dholakia Red Sparrow to give a big nicotine hit, @doggybobos, and very easy to snuff little and often, as described by @Snuffbox. It’s fairly finely ground, but not powdered like toast.
