Ok so this my fourth day of snuffing and the skin just inside each nostril is scabbed over and painful when touched/wiped.
Is this a normal thing a new snufftaker gets?
Are Calluses in this area a norm, and if so, how long do they take to form?
Also, how long does it usually take this sort of thing to heal up?
It’s really rough on me not being able to enjoy my new favorite pastime.
I suspect you are blowing/wiping your nose often, and are making it chapped.
I’d suggest a very moist lip balm on the area when you go to bed, I bet it’s much better in the morning…
My first couple of days I had pretty raw nostrils. After a week or two, my nose stopped protesting. I blamed the WoS SM500. :D @DireWolf brings up a good point though. Before I became accustomed to snuff I was blowing my nose a lot more often. It could very well be a friction issue with hankies/tissues.
Make sure to do a proper blow out now and then too. Before bed (at least!) I do a sinus rinse as well.
The inside of my nose is fine although this morning i did find small bits of hardened snuff coming out when i blew my nose. Is it a bad idea to leave snuff in overnight?
I move to snus at the end of the day to give my nose a couple hours to clear before going to bed. I wouldn’t worry about a few bits of snuff overnight though, the mucous encapsulates it overnight and it usually just falls out with the first blow and shower in the am. You could use a neti pot before bed if it concerns you, but in 3 or 4 hundred years before the neti pot no ones really had an issue before.
I always have snuff in my nose when I wake up. A little hedges or sm500 and a hot shower clears it out just fine, and I’m ready to start my day (by shoving more tobacco up my nose).
Yeah I’ve had those with certain snuffs, especially dark coarse snuffs used with regularity.
One time it was like I burned the inside of my nose by sniffing a snuff a little too hard. This was with the FUBAR white snuff (forget what it’s called). My nose was completely stopped for days except when I took more white snuff, which would reopen it briefly, and it was somewhat painful. It felt like there was a sore or wound deep within my nose. It passed eventually though and that was a particularly caustic snuff.
@RCastle Are you using cloth hankies? Paper tissue will tear your nose up if you use them as often as a snuffer needs one. Get a few quality 100% cotton hankies and run them through the wash a couple times to soften them up and rinse away loose dye. I snuff before bed and the only symptom i’ve noticed is occasional heartburn in the morning, i think from backdrip. And some wicked dreams if the nicotine is still pumping through my veins when i doze off.
@Noisebox yes i’ve cloth hankies but they are a polyester/cotton blend. It’s so weird when I go to buy bandannas these days that it is a struggle to find the all-cotton ones.
@horus92 that sounds a lot worse than what I’m going through.
one thing this has done for me is make me a bit more careful about taking snuff in a way that will go back too far, causing me sneezing fits that I will have go cleaning up with my hankie. So the discipline necessary for all day snuffing without the use of a hankie is something i am more determined to obtain.
I do wonder how those folks in those snufftaking competition can keep taking ounces and ounces of snuff without a sneeze.
786 My nose went through a “hardening” of sorts when I began snuffing. I use only 100% cotton handkerchiefs and my nose still gets chapped and raw sometimes, so it’s not the hankies I assure you. The lip balm is a good idea, I have a dedicated one for my nose. Sometimes some neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment is indicated. I apply it (when I need it) at bedtime, right after my bedtime pinch.
My nose also has endured periods of rawness and sores on the inside. There are two approaches to this: either give no snuff to the offending nostril until it stops this foolishness, or continue snuffing in said nostril to show it that you’re not going to succumb to its tricks. Ymmv
I second the lip balm thing! And a clean out before bed. One needs to look after one’s primary organ of pleasure lol
I ran into issues a few years ago when I first started snuffing regularly. I was using paper towels or t.p. Or what have you, whatever was around and my nose suffered miserably. I stopped snuffing for a short time till my nose healed up and from then on used only hankies. Haven’t had any issues since.
