My New Snuff Bottle

I picked this up at an antique mall last week. They had others that look like traditional snuff horns, almost like miniature powder horns. Right now it’s full of Samuel Gawith Irish D Light. EDIT: Sorry for the horrid pictures. My camera is dying a slow death.

Very nice find, cstokes. What is it made from? ~Ken

Cattle horn I think

Cool. Very.

Very nice!

Glad to hear it’s not made of Tiger bones or elephant ivory…

When I was a boy all sorts of things were made from Ivory. We didn’t know there would ever be a shortage of elephants, sort of like oil now. We didn’t know cigarettes would be considered bad for you some day either. In fact asthma medicine was dispensed in cigarettes you bought at the chemists and doctors would prescribe them. If a snuff box were old I wouldn’t feel bad about owning one made of ivory. The culture was different then and after all, the elephant isn’t using the ivory any more. In the future, people will be shocked that we could be so callous as to use the things we do. Lets face it, if we felt the same then as we do now, there would be no curry houses in England either, but I still love a good curry. EDIT: I guess I should explain that last statement. The curry coming to the UK as a result of empire and colonialism. Normal then but looked upon askance now.

I’ve seen numerous Ivory snuff bottles, I will never buy one out of principle. It killed me to buy this one. I’ve been eyeing it for a few months and decided that it should go to a good home where it can be appreciated.

Though a mamoth bone snuff box would be the bomb.

Chris, ivory also come form elephants which were culled because of over stock and/or old age. In our Kruger National Park they do it every year, otherwise the animals will destroy the habitat. I will buy ivory items from that source.

I understand, Pieter. I am not against Ivory products like that, and I think there is a market for LEGAL Ivory products along with documentation and such. However, in the states it is very hard to know where this stuff is coming from. A while back I saw a Rhino Horn figurine… not good. Also a Zebra rug with the head attached. Things like this are just strange to me, I don’t really understand why anyone would want something like that when there are synthetic products that look and work just as well.

CATTLE HORN!!! JK JK Dont want to see a tripletech thing start up again, I do love my cattle though

I agree that products made from animals need to be carefully examined for their provenance. I would not knowingly buy a product made from a poached animal, or from an endangered species. However, I see no problem with legally obtained ivory or other such things. The issue is, can you trust the source? It’s not always an easy decision.
