Hey all, my first post besides intro. I have been trying to find out how to keep snuff out of my throat and sinuses, a daunting challenge although I’ve been doing the pinch thing and sniffing very gently. I recently have been having luck with taking a pinch and just physically putting it in my nostril with my thumb, sans sniffing, then gently squeezing the nostrils together to distribute the snuff. It is working pretty well, although after a time I find it still ends up in my throat, headed for my stomach if I don’t expectorate. Do any of you know of the long term health consequences of ingesting snuff, however inadvertently? When sniffing a high-dry snuff, if you over-sniff and it feels like you’ve gotten some in your lungs, does the powdered baccy actually make it down into your lungs? If so, again, what are the consequences? I’m currently going nuts over Wilson’s raspberry. I’ve been a dedicated pipe smoker for more than fifteen years, but since getting on to this stuff recently, I’m only smoking one or two bowls. I find this particular snuff utterly compelling, at first I really dug the raspberry scent, but now I’m discovering a really weird taste/smell underlying the fruit. I can’t put my finger on it, it’s fecund, strange, and arcane. Instant addiction. Lastly, I live in Canada and have been unable after diligent searching to find a source online or otherwise for this stuff. Anybody know if US online retailers are going to find a way around this new fascist PACT law? Cheers from the peanut gallery.
I’m just going to throw this out there without too much research since I have your thread open. From what I’ve read, there have been no real snuff related illnesses in the last hundred or more years. The good thing about snuff, is if it does make it’s way into your lungs it does not contain titanium dioxide and all of the other non-absorbing stuff found in oxycontin, cocaine, etc… (for the people that sniff that crap), so it will work it’s way back out thanks to your cilia and break down as well. As for your last question, I have no idea. I just order from nicotinerush.com several times a year within the US. Hopefully I’m not full of crap here…just going off the top of my head.
Hello fellow Canuck! Re: snuff in lungs or stomach - I have never felt like it got in my lungs (even with high dry toast and such) but had it definitely invade my sinuses and throat. It is such a tiny amount, that I doubt that swallowing that would cause a problem. You would have to eat a LOT to even get an upset tummy (think many spoonfuls). Even a few particles in your lungs would not likely be a big deal, unless you do it constantly. Snuff is actually a pretty coarse powder compared to the dusts your lungs regularly have to deal with, so it isn’t much of a problem. It will be trapped in mucous and the cilia will expel it eventually. As it is very soft plant matter it won’t cause scaring or get embedded, the way fine silica or asbestos fibers might. Re: ordering from Canada - NicotineRush and Mr. Snuff both ship to Canada. They are moving to Britain to avoid some of the more onerous PACT issues, and of course it is no big deal for them to mail to Canada from there either. I have bought from NicotineRush before, with great service. Haven’t tried Mr. Snuff yet but folks on this board say he is also a great vendor. Wilsons also has an online store now for direct purchases from the factory, and they ship from Britain to Canada via post as well. See here: http://sharrowmills-online.com/ You can order online if you have a Visa card - otherwise if you have MasterCard, you will have to call your order in and give them your CC #. Be aware that the small tins are about 10g, while the large tins are about 25g, and that prices are in Pounds Sterling. You can also buy 1/2 pound and 1 pound drums of your beloved Raspberry if you wish…depending on how dedicated you actually are. As an aside, other vendors in Britain also sell to Canada, including Toque, MySmokingShop and SnuffSuperMarket. Re: Wilson’s Raspberry - never tried it. I believe you though when you say you like it! Best Regards, Geraldo
Geraldo is correct. Dave and I ship to Canada all the time. Tom NicotineRush.com
I’ve bought from most of the vendors Geraldo listed and had good experiences with all of them. Toque is best purchased directly; for US Scotches Nicotinerush.com and mrsnuff.com are both excellent. I’ve ordered twice from NR and once from mrsnuff and appreciate the thoughtful customer service each provided when shipping. You’ll know what I mean when you get your order. I cannot in good faith recommend one vendor over the other, so I suggest two orders. I didn’t see snuffstore.co.uk listed. The owner is a member here as well, and they are a good place to check out as well. I got my first F&T HDT from them just a few weeks ago. They also carry some pigtail twist, which is wild if you like pipes. A little piece sliced off and hand-rubbed into my tiny meerschaum was strong and awesome. Curiously, the only snuff I’ve seen for sale IN Canada (at least in my part of it) is Poschl, and rarely. The first time I tried snuff, I thought I hated it. Turns out I hate Poschl. One good thing about PACT forcing Our Yankee Friends to the UK is that Royal Mail seems among the world’s fastest. I received my very first Toque sample in 5 days or so, including the weekend. I’ve had crosstown mail take thrice that.
Wow, guys thanks for these most informative and gracious answers. I actually have an order for a snuff box into Mr. Snuff right now, so hopefully that will open things up for me as I don’t use credit cards, only MO’s, which is really tricky most of the time with online buying. Glad to hear we can order from the Uk.Hopefully the duty won’t kill us. They tax the living c— out of baccy here. Good info on the health aspects. I’m learning pretty quick that the Raspberry is a much coarser grind that Wilson’s crumbs of comfort or honey menthol, the other two of theirs I’ve tried. This coarser stuff gets into unwanted places a lot less. Thanks again, I look fwd to happy hours wandering this neighborhood.
I love wilsons but their grinds are not always consistent. The last tin of crumbs I got was much coarser then any raspberry I’ve had. Strange. Either way they are both amazing snuffs.
No great amount of nasal snuff reaserch done to date but British work reported in the Lancet suggested no overt dangers. The consensus seems to have gone on to about the level of being a coffee user in terms of how bad, and no snuff maker has ever had a health suit filed. Bottm line: nothing burns, no condensates. About the worst it can do is cause congetsion if you over do it or find a snuff that doesn’t agree with you, so enjoy.
Thanks Pal. J
