My first snuffs ordered: blown away by Kralingse Molens

Greetings all! I’m new to the world of snuff (only been at it for a month). Last week, I decided to order a batch of Kralingse Molens snuff. Incidentally, I live within a mile of the mills, and will be visiting them soon. Long story short: I’ve only snuffed Pöschl stuff up until now; all of it mentholated. Kralingse snuff is a wholly different creature altogether. I’ve not had my nose be this happy in 10 years. My sense of smell has come back, even though I still smoke cigarillos. Never dreamed this was possible – being gifted one of your senses back. Let’s just say that yesterday, I ordered 7 more packs. I love all of them; not all love at first sight, but as my sniffing technique has improved they’ve all grown on me. My absolute favorites: Macuba. Rose oil & cognac – this one blew me away right off the bat. I am trying not to over-indulge in this one, it’s just too good. Very easy on the nose, too. Pompadour. Clovey joy. Spicey and full of attitude. I just combined this one with Macuba, and it was highly enjoyable. Pepermuntsnuif. Latakia based. I did small pinches at first, but this one needs larger sniffs to come into its own. The peppermint makes for a great change-up from mentholated snuffs, and the Latakia base is so very deliciously dark in contrast to the refreshing peppermint burn. A/P snuif. Wonderful pine (and brine?) aroma. Once again Latakia based; needs somewhat larger pinches than the Virginia tobaccos. The Latakias seem to have some trouble leaving their plastic dispensers, so I can recommend removing one or two of the little plastic bars in the hole of the 25g pack. I can heartily recommend the above snuffs, as well as the Limburgertabak (pepper!), Mettaijer snuif, Latakaia ao 1860 and Bon Bon. My next order is coming in this weekend. Giddy with anticipation. Never realized how much joy I’d been missing out on when I just smoked the one brand of cigarettes I always bought. There’s so much more to tobacco!

If you’re having trouble getting enough out of the dispensers, you can un-tape the top and dip into with a spoon, I find this to be easier and more enjoyable. It’s a little tricky to find the tape but it’s there and you’ll know it when you see it.

Incidentally, I’m looking to branch out into other brands of snuff. If anyone has recommendations based on what I wrote above, they would be very welcome.

Thanks for your reply, oilmaster. I found the tape (Kralingse dispensers are the same type used by a leading Dutch culinary spices manufacturer). Haven’t tried using a spoon yet, though I do have a suitable one at hand. Will try it now with the Latakia ao 1860…

You’re lucky to live so close to the mill. I’ve tried and love Macuba as well, but I can’t imagine how much better it is fresh. If you haven’t tried it already I reccomend their gingerbread. There’s really not many snuffs like the De Kralingse line that i can think of, but Wilsons honey menthol or Samuel Gawith honey are good mixers with Macuba.

My favorite is Musinotabak, well worth trying. I am green with envy that you live down the street from the mill.

@oilmaster I tried the spoon thing. Very different sniffing experience from either back-of-hand or pinching. Might have to try it with the other Kralingse Molen snuffs (oh, poor me…) @TomStrasbourg thank you for the recommendations. I’ll put on my best puppy-dog eyes and try to charm the muse into letting me use her credit card for an international order. The gingerbread is actually in my next order, as is the musinotabak. I also have high expectations of the bolongaro & the prins regent.

If Molens and Poschl are the only brands you have tried so far you have only scratched the surface of snuff taking. They are both great brands especially Molens, they make some of the greatest dessert snuffs imo. There are so many great snuffs out there to try, I would suggest mixing things up at first and try out as many different varieties as you can. SP’s and toasts are a nice start but keep in mind the finer grind stuff may be a challenge at first. There are many excellent perfumed English and Indian snuffs. Read as many reviews as you can and keep an open mind when trying new stuff. My preferences and tastes change often and I can appreciate many snuffs that I did not care for earlier. Happy snuffing.

@Rotterdxm, You can’t go wrong with the Kralingse snuffs. I love them all. If you want to branch out my favorite German snuffs are from Bernard, and for English I’m torn between Wilsons of Sharrow, Samuel Gawith and Toque, but there are great snuffs from every company! I too live down the street from a snuff mill, but it hasn’t made any snuff in about 60 years. Its a dilapidated ruin to be honest, but that’s another story. So I’m as envious as everyone else. You should get friendly with Jaap Bes, who is a regular here and arrange yourself a tour of the mills. From everything I’ve seen and read it looks like a fascinating place to visit. He’ll probably try to recruit you to give him a hand around the place and get your wind miller’s certification, I beleieve they are all volunteers. It would be a fun job anyway and think of all the snuff!

Thank you all for your kind words :"> Jaap Bes.

yeah well thanks for the great snuffs. I think we got the better end of that deal.

I must agree that the Star and Lily mills produce some of the most delicious snuffs I have ever tried, but I too, dislike the dispenser containers. Personal favorites include Choco, Bon Bon, Pompadour and Musinotabac. Their non-tobacco offerings, particularly Mentholin are also in my daily rotation. i like the two different Potpourris at different times. Just for fun, I ordered some of their Mixed Meat kitchen spice in a recent order from MS. If their cooking seasonings are as good as their snuffs, well…we have double the treasure then! If I ever return to the Netherlands, I will try to find my way to Rotterdam and the mills. I think it would be wonderful to get a tin of everything they make! Dank U Well, de Kraleng’s/Molens!

@Uncle_Squinty: Alstublieft, graag gedaan. You’re always welcome at the mills. But contact me before comming, than we can make some arangements. Sorry but you have to keep up with the containers for quit a while. Jaap Bes.

@Snuffmiller. No worries about the containers. I am certain that the snuff will not stay in them for long, anyway. Pardon the assassination of the spelling, but I just tried the Limburger…tabac today. What a lovely surprise. I have a number of Molens containers about the house, and I often surprise myself, as I will pick one up and have a taste without reading the label. Today saw me sniffing Potpourri #1, Choco Virginie and the Limbeurgerjaktabac stuff. I cannot find my BonBon, nor my Pompadour, and this fact irritates me very much. Thanks Jaap for the wonderful snuffs.

I keep mine cool in glass jars. They are as great as the day I popped the tops off. Just filled a snuff box with Hollandse Bolongaro .Very nice

Hollandse Bolongaro is one of the best plainish snuffs I’ve tried, simply beautiful tobacco. Stefan

So, I’ve had some time to snuff my way around the second batch of Kralingse Molens’ tobacco I ordered. The great: Prins Regent. Hands down. This one has it all. Macuba base with plenty of goodness (citrus!) added. Makes me feel positively regal when taking it. If I’m going out for a night of dancing to quality electronic music, this is the one I take with me. Has definitely interested me enough that I will be checking out other ‘fruity’, (at most lightly mentholated) snuffs. Recommendations? Musinotabak. Didn’t stand out for me initially, but it’s really grown on me. “Complex” describes it well – give it some space. Best enjoyed on its own, rather than right after a simpler, strongly-aromatic snuff. The grind (quite coarse, if I’ve got my terminology right) has a similar “tickling” effect on my sinuses as that of the Limburgertabak – another Kralingse snuff that’s grown on me since I started this thread. The Limburger’s stimulation is more intense, due to the “staartpeper” in it, a dried pepper from Indonesia. Another way to clear the sinuses, instead of menthol. The good. Hollandse Bolongaro. NO idea what is in this; it’s somewhat plain. If you like your snuff au naturel, you’ll probably dig this one quite a bit. Oranjesnuif. This Latakia-based snuff has a (to my nose) very subtle orange undercurrent. Would be more enjoyable for me if it were more strongly scented. Unfortunately, the orange aroma dissipated within a week or two. I blame myself for not using an airtight container. The sweet. I ordered the following three mostly as an experiment. Turns out I really like spicy snuff, occasionally with a fruity accent; food-like snuffs, however, are a bit too sweet for my tastes. There is no disputing the quality of these three, though. First ones I break out for interested non-snuffers to take a whiff of. Gingerbread snuff. Does what it says on the tin. I understand from a thread on this forum that this one is actually a blend of three different, proposed gingerbread snuffs, all of which ended up getting used to make this. Eerily similar to the actual food. Choco-cream & choco-mint snuff, virginia type. Again, virtually perfect emulation of their namesakes. Very good, but for some reason they make me hungry… Still not past halfway on most containers. The Latakia Ao. 1860 has sat mostly untouched in favor of its pepperminty mate. Will be ordering more Prins Regent, Macuba, Limburgertabak, Musinotabak, Pompadour (which seems to have improved over time) and Pepermuntsnuif, and this time I’ll be storing it properly. Wouldn’t want to run out. Next step: adding some summer fruits to my wintery weeks.

Just put a slice of orange peel in with that snuff and over night .VIOLA Fresh orange snuff. Any orange peel will revive the blandest snuff. Tangerine, kumquat, mandarin, clementines, navel,Cara Cara ,Moro.Valencia. Lemons ,Limes. Grapefruit. You choose . For a longer lasting scent use essential orange oil, just a drop on a Q-tip placed in with the dead snuff. Remove before use.

That IS basement shamanism. I’ll try it – sounds really interesting… “hacking” your own snuffs. Thanks!
