My First Silver Snuffbox

I just bought my first silver snuffbox on ebay. I may have paid a little too much for it but it was the only silver snuffbox with goldwash I could find that wasn’t too big or too expensive. I think I’ll keep it on my nightstand filled with Himalaya my fav. nightcap. You can see it here http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350429999289&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Much better than my small altoids boxes. But mine are cheaper. LOL

My wife would cut my unmentionables off…lol!! Congrats on your purchase…enjoy!!

Freakin awesome! Man that is sweet all around. You scored, don’t look back at all.

Worth it!

Cool.

Quite the sexy snuff box you got there! I’m sure you’ll love it and put it to good use

i think i might have to take back my previous statement…my wife would just have to leave my unmentionables alone! after taking a gander at these contraptions, it looks like u got a steal!! good job my friend! u could have just sprung for this…lol…http://cgi.ebay.com/EXTREMELY-RARE-19th-C-ARMADILLO-TAIL-SIL-SNUFF-BOX-/300506010844?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f78dd4dc

creepy kind of

@Fisch that is wierd, me no likey lol Stefan

the thing i find humorous, well one of the many things, is that somebody saw an armadillo tail and thought, “ya know what, that would make a great snuffbox!” Of the many things you can use an armadillo tail for, such as a tail for an armadillo, this genius immediately thought “snuffbox”!

LOL, quite right :stuck_out_tongue: . It’s funny you mention that… Our dog likes to chew on things, and so we bought some treats for him… One of those being a Pigs foot (Which looks rather gross, and I wonder how a dog would chew that, but I guess they do). And it’s just like a hollowed out hoof. And when I saw it, I thought to myself, “Hmm, you know, if it looked a little nicer it wouldn’t be a bad snuff box” … But now that I think about it again, that’d be pretty unattractive… Definitely not something you would pull out in public and take a sniff from…

it kinda reminds me of one of those fertility totems…lol!

Now I gotta go look that up… Lol. I don’t believe I have ever heard of that

apparently keeping phallic symbols around the bedroom helps a woman get pregnant. me n the old lady just did it the old fashioned way…somethin to do with no clothes and a bit of exercise! ; )

Yep, that works. I hope the snuff box doesn’t turn out to be a pillbox; happened to me and the hinge was useless for snuff.

Well the snuffbox came in today and I must say I am very very happy with this purchase. I gave it the old shake test, where I filled it with snuff and shook the living hell out it and no leaking snuff and no snuff in the hinges, even did it over a piece of blank paper to make doubly sure no snuff leaked out. I think its safe to say that this is an ACTUAL snuff box and I couldn’t be happier, this is probably the best purchase I ever made. Also I noticed something you can’t really see in the picture. When you open the box just a crack and look in you can see around the hinge on the lid and base are two angled pieces of silver that cover the hinge when the box is closed so that no snuff goes in the hinge, yep I think it safe to say this is a REAL snuffbox. I just wish I could get it dated as it does seem very old, any suggestions on where one might get an antique silver snuffbox dated?

@n9inchnails If the piece is hallmarked you will have a year mark that shows when it was assayed and where, however continental pieces will not have that. If that is the case then its entirely down to knowledge but even the most experienced collector will only be able to estimate in the absence of checkable hall or makers marks. First, scrutinise the box inside and out and look for any markings (they can be minute and easy to miss); if there are any that makes things much easier. If not then an experienced dealer/collector may have an idea simply through the design. Things that give pointers are the amount of wear and the type of hinge or opening catch. Whilst just about all pill boxes are unsuitable for snuff, there are a small amount of very well made ones that do make good snuff boxes (given all the recent advice that obviously makes it harder still for the new buyer) The spring catch on your snuffbox is not that usual on older boxes which makes me think it may be a high quality modern pill box - but that is based on looking at one photo so don’t take it as gospel. My favourite dealer is http://www.ifranks.com/silverware/snuff\_boxes/snuff\_boxes.html You may get an idea from them.
