I’ve decided next month I’m going to make my first bulk purchase, by which I mean a several hundred gram of just one snuff. Unless my soon to arrive Toque Toast and Marmalade changes my mind, I’m going to buy a 400g economy bag of Toque Bourbon. What was your first bulk snuff purchase? I think bulk should start at 100g.
Fubar Grunt! 260g X4
Holy ravioli - that’s a helluva first bulk purchase! :))
A killer Gram! Toque bourbon has left me cold! I have 400gram bulk of Whiskey and Honey, 200 Gram of plain old Vanilla, and 200 gram of Lavender. Bulk snuff is the freshest way possible to store and enjoy. The WOS bulks I purchased are my favorites from a quality perspective. I am glad that I bought bulk of Fubar, the batches have been rather different since then, I get a small tin every once and a while once a new batch arrives just to check. I have so much snuff that my TAD seems to have abated. I am a sucker for the Gawith tubs though, damn fine snuff and a great tub to preserve freshness. I just dig variety. And over the year my tastes change a lot, give that some thought as far as your choice in bulk. Roderick makes the bulk choice difficult, so many! He is a godsend to snuffers, too bad he is such a pussy when it comes to making a manly snuff though!!! I mean just grind up that Thouc Lao and sprinkle a little PH up on it Roderick!!! Call it Roderick’s Super Viagra Rocket Fuel! Feel free to chime in here guy’s!
Hehe. I have to force myself to put the bourbon down if any of the other snuffs want a look in. On my wish list, which after this month’s crazy expenditure will take a few months is Toque bourbon as already mentioned. Toque whiskey and honey 400g Toque cheese and bacon 400g Toque berwick brown 400g I never want to be without those snuffs.
You live in England right? No reason to fear being without.
Switzerland
A 2lb tin of Kendal Brown Original, meant for sale to retailers. Snuff was usually ladled out of those tall tins for loose sales by the ounce, but I was greedy back then. Remain gluttonous to this day. After sampling tins for experience, bulk buys are best. Snuff is usually better quality and far and away more cost effective.
My first bulk purchase was a 250g tub of Grunt that I got the day it was back in stock after the Grunt shortage, my second was a 200g bag of Quit and I agree with PhilipS, bulk purchases are always much better and fresher than the tin.
Interesting what you say, chaps. I think I’m going to make one bulk purchase per month as I’ve now discovered some firm favorites. The thought of them being even better in bulk just fills me with excitement :))
Still somewhat new so only bulk i’ve ordered is 100 grams of F&T HDT. Can’t live without it!
My first bulk order was 1/2 lb of Tranter’s Country Doctor. I have since bought 1/2lb of Camphor and Mild, which I have since finished, 250g of SG Zip and 1lb each of SM Blue and Camphor and Mild. I want to get some Toque Natural Toast in bulk too, just have to save up a bit. Either that or 500g of Irish D Light, can’t make my mind up. Stefan
My first bulk purchase was a 2lb tub of stokers plain and 2lbs of sweet for good measure. That was over three years ago. Sadly, it is not longer made. It’s still good and fresh! I think the tubs were around $35 each at that time; it was a good value.
My first bulk was 800 g Toque Quit. I don’t regret that purchase. I agree with you Stitch…the Stokers is a good value and I really like the plain too!
If I remember rightly my first was a 1/2 lb of Wilson’s Best SP, only a couple of years ago. Before that I used to buy it loose from the 1 lb tub at the good tobacconists we used to have here.
@ermtony - Best SP was my second bulk purchase along with a tub of IHT22!
And No. 22 was my second!
My first bulk acquisition (it was a contest prize not a purchace) was 400g of a Toque of my choice. Being unable to decide, I was allowed to get 4 100g bags instead. They were Quit, Coke, Original, and Chocolate. I think my first actual bulk purchace may have been Toque Spanish Gem.
Great thread. My first bulk purchase, and that was just a few weeks ago, was 200g of WoS Clove. Can’t live without the stuff! I’m just trying to decide what’s next.
Surely you mean McChrystal’s Clove?
I’ve only ordered bulk directly from Wilsons of Sharrow; half pound of Grand Cairo and IDHT#20 first, then Best SP and IHT#22. Very happy with these purchases.
I can certainly see myself buying some bulk Wilsons too. Camphor & Mild, Princes, and IHT22 being current faves.
My first bulk purchase was the illustrious McC’s Hopfen Schnuf 200g.
I made a few purchases of 100g bags of Perlesreuter and Pöschl’s Schmalzlers, but this summer I purchased a few 1/2 lb tins from Wilson’s of Sharrow.
Like stitch mine was also a 2lb. tub of stokers plain. I then split it with someone here at snuffhouse.
One pound of old Levi Garrett from E-Bay was my first big bulk buy.
Just been checking out the sharrowmills site and their 1lb drum deals. First time I’ve visited that site. Now I’m really excited! lol. Very resaonable prices for their 1lb drums. Skint kid in a candy store. Torture!! Patience… Patience…
@Xander, you’re right McChrystal’s Clove. My bad.
I’ve never bought snuff in any other way than bulk; if you are a serious snuffer little cans that dry the snuff out as soon as you break the seal just don’t cut it. You will notice a whole range of rich flavour when you start using bulk; it’s how the blender envisioned it to be. It’s common to get a blast of ammonia type fumes when you open a bulk can; that’s just an indication of factory freshness and nothing to worry about. Make sure you keep the bulk supply as airtight as possible; the WoS cannisters are great for that. There’s always a lot of discussion about things like freezing it or storing it in the fridge etc etc. The only thing you need to do is keep the air out. Nothing to stop you adopting other methods of course but they won’t have the slightest effect on how the snuff keeps. I have a whole bunch of 30 year old snuffs thats just been kept in perfectly airtight cans at normal room temp. and its as good as the day it was bought. Enjoy. @OscarWabbit
I’m definitely leaning that way; there are several now that I know are permanent stock snuffs and I’m going to be concentrating on buying those for the next few months. I’ll continue to try new snuffs in smaller containers though; too many don’t suit my tastes initially. One thing I’ve learned though, is that something that doesn’t turn me on initially might be good to me a few weeks or months later.
My first bulk purchase was 100g of Toque Original. My biggest bulk buy was 750g of Levi Garrett.
Thanks for the informative and helpful post @Snuffster. I’ve learned a lot from you *doffs cap*
@ddavelarsen - thats happened to me time and again; hated the first pinch and ended up loving it. When Fubar came out I gave it a lousy review, which I regret, because I buy the stuff bulk now; it’s an all day snuff for me. Oscar, no cap doffing necessary but thankyou.
I’ve been trying to trim down the selection here over the last several months, and I’m looking to just have a few experimental tins, but mostly just bulk of my favourites. My first bulk buy was 1lb. drum of F&T HDT, and 1/2 each of McC’s O&G and Hops. I’ve since got 150g of Toque Peanut Butter, 50g of Cheese and Bacon, a 400g of Spanish Gem. The next ones I’m looking to get are 400g of Whiskey & Honey, and 1lb. of Tranter’s No.22 IHT. Anyone have a source for bulk Tranter’s?
I’m waiting on a order of Toque Blueberry menthol and Toque Quit at the moment, this will be my first larger order.
Sorry to revive this thread … but if we order in bulk to the US (for those who have done this), any issue? long delays? need for signature? newbie question. will take me some time to get down to which snuffs i will order in bulk, but ermtony and snuffster have me thinking it is the only way to go. Best SP being one, maybe Spanish Gem another. Still trying to narrow down my toast tastes … leaning towards WoS No. 22 … but more toasts are on the way … just a tad more …
I’ve heard it takes a little more time. Not much. So basicaly what that means is that don’t order bulk when in a pinch but it’s more then worth it otherwise. Many memebers in america have ordered bulk snuff and been really happy with their purchase.
Only way to go, just try to get a handle on what you like first. Buy cheap try out tins, never tap boxes, and get a feeling for snuffs first, and go look at the top ten lists, Any snuff on most lists is worth a go, I try to find a reviewer who’s tastes I can get a feel for.
Thanks bob and Whalen … agreed … I have / still in process of amassing as many 5/10/25g tins that sound appealing to me … and taking notes, determining which ones make sense to bulk up on, following the reviews when I see them and reading reviews on mrsnuff, snuffreviews, etc. But I just wanted to ease my mind about whether there will be trouble or not.
The Wilson’s sale a while ago gave me the ability to stock up on some bulk. Since then I have found numerous others that I would happily have in bulk, much to the chagrin of my wife.
Yes, more Grand Cairo.
Now, now. Actually some Camphor & Mild as well as Aniseed & Eucalyptus.
@Whalen please dont give the false impression that generally all snuffs in tap-boxes are bad. first point is that there are several great snuffs which are only available in tap-boxes (some Schmalzers from Bernhard for example) and second: what the hell is wrong with a tap-box ?? in case you are a heavy snuff user and most time of the day on the run, what is wrong with some good snuff from a handy tap-box ?? btw, to add something to the topic instead of mocking the people around (Sorry Whalen!), i never had a bulk purchase so far (i dont consider Schmalzer 100g packs bulk) - anyway, time will tell…
I’ve heard (and it makes sense to me) that tap-boxes are just fine for snuffs that get their moisture from oils instead of water (Poschl is one that I know of).
@Prismaster: Well, truth is, generally all English snuffs in tap-boxes ARE bad. For oiled snuffs like the Pöschl’s and Bernards, yes, they do just fine. However, for English snuffs they are an abomination. Go order yourself some Gawith Hoggarth or Samuel Gawith, with the same flavour in both a tap box and a tin. Leave them lying around for, oh let’s say a week, and then see how the tap box holds up in comparison to the tin. For those of us like myself and most likely @snuffbrant, who wouldn’t finish a tap box within a week, they just lead to disappoint. Perfectly good snuff dries out and becomes unusable. Now as for the German snuffs, I have months tap boxes of some Bernards that are just as good as when I bought them. Point is, the design only works for one particular type of snuff, so making an exception for it, it’s generally best to take @Whalen’s advice and avoid them.
My first bulk order was half a pound of Camphor and Mild in the Wilsons online store launch last year. I’ve had a two more tubs of it since then.
500 g SG SP No1 HM.
i have to agree with @shikitohno … note that @petersuki lists SG SP No1 HM as one to buy in bulk, which i have in a tap box … based on what I have tasted/sniffed of Sp1HM, there isn’t any way I could bring myself to buy in bulk from tap box tasting alone - even though i know it is a fantastic snuff if only i had tried it in a tin, the greatness of flavors is there, but kind of burned out, in the tap. I also cannot, lord knows I am trying, finish a single tap box quickly - but it did strike me that my SG snuff in tap boxes seemed parched on arrival. so yes, even though I am new, comparing taps to WoS in tins, or even SG in tins … I can tell when something is just bone dry and lackluster. Tap boxes seem cruel for Samuel Gawith’s fine snuff. I do, on the other hand, have some Braniff on its way cross the pond, and am looking forward to tapping some out there! still … back on topic … is there a general agreement as to which “tubs” have proven best at sealing up nicely when buying in bulk?
@shikitohno i see. thanks for the enlightment.
@Prismaster - You have a good point, There are some exceptions! My statement was too general, But the worst snuff I ever had came out of a tap box. And I was under the impression that all GH snuffs sucked, based on snuff sampled from tap boxes. The tubs were as different as night and day! I remember being excited at a chance to try Red Crest, when my brand new tap box arrived I had the worst snuff of my life, it had nothing left to offer in that tap box. But I remain resolute that the Angels dwell in bulk tubs!
@snuffbrant: So far every type I’ve bought has sealed well. WoS, McC’s, F&T, and Dholakia all come in some pretty good containers. I was a little disappointed with the F&T tub, as I was half hoping it’d just be a scaled up metal version of their tins. Just remember that if you buy and Toque in bulk, you’ll need your own container, as they come in bags. I plop it all in bail and clamp jars, myself.
@shikitohno - thank you … was wondering what to do if/when ordered 200g of Spanish Gem
Toque Quit was my first and then Stoker’s Plain .
you don’t even need to let the tapbox sit for a week- more often than not if you order some SG tap boxes they’ll ARRIVE DRY! that’s just unfortunately the way it is with English snuffs. Too bad. Tappers are a GREAT idea! PERFECT for German snuffs all day!
My first two bulk orders were both McChrystal’s O&G, the 200 g. container. I’m about to order my first Wilson’s 260 g worth of Aniseed Extra, I can’t get enough of it.
My actual first Bulk purchase was 500 grams of Dholakia white, and 500 of Black. I need to put some up for trade, I will never get through these! I got them for trading and then was asked to keep my purchase on the QT. Kinda defeated the purpose really!
Well so far in bulk I have: 1lb Camphor and mild Bruton 4.65oz Rooster 4.65oz Tops 4.65oz Garrett 5.58oz Square 4.65oz Honest 5.58oz Garett sweet 5.58oz Levi Garrett 5.58oz RR Mills Plain 4.65oz Dental Mild 4.65oz (x2) (edit forgot these 2) Toque cherry 100g Toque raspberry 100g Toque peach 100g And ordered yesterday 200g of O&G 1lb Best SP Cheese and bacon 100g I’d like to buy Toque 400g’s but am also put off by the lack of container. Not keen on bags. I plan on ordering more bulk from Wilson’s, McCrystals, and now SG too.
That’s pretty impressive bulk collection to amass since the time you started this thead. I think we need to see some photos of bulk collections (snuff porn).
@Whalen In regard of english snuffs, now i am totally sure that you are right with what you said and i had exact the same with a GH snuff from a tap-box and it was just horrible (Strawberry it was), same goes for SP No.1 from SG out of a tap-box. So, that the angels in english snuffs lives in bulk sounds more then true to me now too.
Thanks @Xander, great idea. I’ll post pics next week when my outstanding orders arrive.
@OscarWabbit where did you find a 4.65oz can of Square?
@Prismaster - Two different worlds. My first snuff from Wilson’s bulk was a deep revelation of the “truth” in bulks. The tub has to be big enough for the Angels to fit in! Although they fit nicely in a GH 25 g Tub too! @NIN - My Food Lion has them. Big cans of Square.
@n9inchnail a very kind American Twitter friend helped me source some of those Scotches.
Speaking of acquiring some bulk, today I landed a 2/3 full 2LB container of Stoker’s plain dry snuff. I remembered trying a sample of it when the ‘little old lady’ first got it and I had just starting snuffing. I stopped in today to see where or how she was obtaining the Stoker’s brand since the Pact Act. Turn’s out, she had quit using the dry snuff and went with the Red Man Chewing tobacco. She tried to give the Stoker’s to me but I wouldn’t have it and give your $20 for it. It truly must be pure tobacco without any additives, which surprisingly is very satisfying just like it is.
@hooked would really like to sample that, Stoker´s plain snuff. I am a huge fan of Stoker´s dip and would like to test other products from them as well.
I’ll see what I can do, send your address to randy@heatpumpman.com
200 gr. O&G, received today ;-))
If my memory is right, my first official bulk order was Toque Original, Toque Peppermint, and Toque Champagne. However, I did used to order Reb Bull by the case back when you could spend your money as a free consumer.
My first purchase of > 100g was just a couple of weeks ago. 200g of 6 Photo Kailash.
Grand Cairo
^Yeah, but you order a drum of that once a week.
LMAO! Mine was Best SP. You always remember your first filled up cannister kindly.
Mine was also Best SP.
I don’t know if this counts as bulk, but I count it … since I couldn’t order 200g/400g of it … i have 8 x 25g tubs of GH Irish D … with the screw top GH tubs, I think they will hold up quite nicely.
Another one here for Best SP
Now now Xander, I only have 1.5 lbs of it!
1.5lbs…or 1.5 tons?
@snuffbrant: Aireys of Kendel specializes in GH snuffs. They have them all in bulk. I give them my hghest recommendaton.
@Xander … thank you … I checked them out … QQ, do you have to be a UK resident to order? Or will there be no issues sending to US? So glad you pointed me in their direction … I know most prefer F&T’s HDT, Toque’s Natural Toast or WoS No. 22 … but I find GH’s Irish D my number one … it’s that vinegar niceness combined ~with~ toast “buttery-ness” that makes it stand out. Hell, everything is good about snuff, who am i kidding!?! *grin*
@snuffbrant: I would talk to the proprietor, Peter Baxter. The website might not be set up to handle a credit cars order from the US, but they will ship here, or at least they did about a year ago. I did my business with them over the phone.
My first was Toque W&H, 100g. I still remember the super-fresh reek that was emanating from that envelope…fantastic!
My first bulk order was a one pound drum of Tom Buck. I believe I still have some squirreled away somewhere in a mason jar.
My experience ordering bulk is that I’ve had to wait about an extra two weeks for the order to arrive. The reason for this (as I’m given to understand) is that many bulk selections are made to order. This means they’re exceptionally fresh when you get them, and my experience suggests that they do indeed stay that way for an extended period. My oldest tub is about 6 months old and the snuff is as good as the day I received it. For the everyday faves, it’s the only way to go; worth the wait. Just my newbie opinion.
Here here! I’ll second that last comment.
Kind words for me, who is waiting for a 1/2 lb Wilsons Best SP since two weeks. Thanks for encouraging me to be patient… ;-))
