Hi there all you snuff lovers! Today is a great day for me as I celebrate my 1:st year as a snuffer. It’s been a wonderful year and I’ve come to know many new snuffs which has broaden my horizons a lot. While writing this I’m enjoying some De Kralingse Macuba. I think it’s the proper snuff for this special occasion… The world of snuff is fantastic and wonderful!

M

Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary! I can’t remember exactly when I first rejoined the ranks of snuffers, but it probably was less than 2 years ago. Wonderful stuff indeed; it has helped me cut down on my pipe smoking a bit and the pipe helped me quit the cigarettes some time ago. I’ll have some Macuba in your honor, Nusska.

N

Thank you, Mouse. I’m deeply touched by your gesture of celebrating with me. I quitted smoking cigarettes 15 years ago with the help of snus which we have lots of here in Sweden. But it wasn’t until a year ago when I discovered snuff that I found out what pure tobacco pleasure is all about… Cheers!

T

@Nuuska Gratis pa snuffelsedagen!

S

Congrats @Nuuska - did you make a note of the specific date you started snuffing, or just have a good memory??

I first used snuff several years ago, but then it was very rarely. I didn’t know anything about it - someone at a pub had some Lowen-Prise and was offering it to people, I liked it and asked where he’d got it from, so later I bought some and used it now and again. It was just an occasional novelty thing for me though. Then sometime in early 2011, it’d been ages since I’d last done snuff and I just decided to get back into it and do it more regularly and try different kinds.

W

It’s been less than 6 months for me, but something tells me I’ll have several anniversaries to celebrate!!

N

To thorgrimnr: Grattis på ‘Snuffelsedagen’-that was nice! Thank you! To Sloth: I have a fairly good memory. My first snuff was Toque Absinthe in a bullet. It was a totally new expierience for me in a positive way. I was hooked from the wery beginning and went on to many other snuffs from thereon.

E

40 years for me…

M

23 years ago, on and off for a long time, more serious for the last 5-10 years.

T

15 years.

H

Since december 27th 2011.

First took snuff around age 14 or 15, some time 1977 or 78 (J&H Wilson’s SP No 1).  Later duly tried their No.99 Medicated.  Recall a couple of rather red handkerchiefs in the early days.

Delighted some time 1979 ish to visit G Smith & Sons, Charing Cross Road, and to meet the utterly charming and supremely knowledgeable Vivian Rose.  That gent was truly an example to any retailer in how to show dedication to his product and courteous regard to even the youngest and least knowledgeable of customers (as I was then).

Among my first purchases were a quarter-ounce glass jar of Otterburn (still have jar with a few crumbs in), a tin of Golden Cardinal - and an Ozona Raspberry.  That Golden Cardinal was my first real experience of snuff heaven.

Smoking took over from some time in the 1980s, especially good pipe tobacco and the occasional cigar, also a selective few cigarette brands.  I quit smoking in December '99.  Couple of years later, when I started teaching, I found I was catching every cold that entered my classroom, and recalled Medicated 99.  To my delight, as I asked around a few local tobacconists (now living in one of the former coal mining areas of the English Midlands) I picked-up a tin of Hedges L260.  For a year ort two, this was my “staple diet” - augmented by McChrystal’s JIP when the bugs were really bad - nothing clears the nose quite like JIP - the nicotine hit is pretty stunning, too.  And they combine nicely…  After a year or so, summer made me want a “tamer” form of Hedges - and so I blended it with some SP.

Exploring a few “proper” tobacconists - not least Leather & Tobacconist (Abergavenny, Wales), Salt’s (Coventry), John Hollingsworth’s in Birmingham - and a conversation with Bob Gregory at Samuel Gawith’s introduced me to Snuff Store, and to some of the excellent “house” blends that Gawith’s produce for them.

Seldom use medicated sorts now, except for medicinal purposes in the winter…

Nuuska - may you enjoy many more years partaking of the delights of the “proper” way to partake of tobacco!

N

Thank you all for sharing and congratulating!

To Fretless: Thank you! I also used medicated sorts a lot for the first 8 months or so but now I only take a couple of pinches now and then as an occational treat, like WoS Honey Menthol or J&H Wilson Medicated no.99.

P

Four plus some change for me…i miss Tom, and the free samples.

A

3 to 4 years now. Used snus, chewing tobacco, makla and guthka as well. Actually, yesterday was the first time in years I smoked cigarettes and must say it was great! Got gloriously drunk of course but smoking decision was done before.

P

more then 10 years

K

Since 1979. Found it in local store and thought it was cool after seing it in old movies. I use more during the spring and fall. Really helps with allergies. Like a pipe also and sometimes a little snuff in ontop in the pipe is nice.

B

My first committed snuff purchase was from roderick, so i guess he could tell you how long I’ve been at it!

Since 1993, but only once or twice a year until late 2008- early 2009 when I came online to figure out what I was doing wrong. I found this site and it became my support group, which encouraged my previously unknown TAD Then I started taking snuff full time; gradually phasing out smoking. I consider my snuffiversary date as the date I joined Snuffhouse, 6th of January 2009. So I’m three years and some change.

S

I made my first order from Mr snuff back in July and shortly after joined this site. Been a happy sniffer ever since and took up smoking a pipe shortly after snuff. I’ve quit cigarettes now too

J

1987, I think, so this must be my Silver Jubilee year…

H

2 1/4 years. The flame is and probably will be kept lit. And a huge shout out to Snuffhouse and it’s members, I know I’m crazy, but NOT alone!

N

When you begin with using snuff you don’t want to give it up…it’s such a great pleasure! There’s nothing worse than running out of snuff- I’ve even tried snuffin’ Loose snus in the absence of the real thing. Keep the flame lit all you snuffers out there!

E

About 18 months now, when I stopped smoking.   Major TAD in those months, but I’ve still saved money.

T

About 4 years.  I’m a rookie I know
but I have tried TONS of different kinds…
I guess I took snuff for a little while about 10 years ago, but I didn’t start taking it constantly til about 4-4.5 years ago. Helped me quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago!

K

sometime in the summer of 1973.

W

About 7 years I think.

Stefan

N

Interesting with all the comments by both fairly new users and old timers too. And nice to know how many of you have managed to quit smoking too with the help of snuff! What does TAD stand for?

Thanks again for sharing your experiencies- now I’m no longer alone as a snuffman hereabout (except for my old mother who I succeeded in joining me in snuffing too, he he!)

X

@Nuuska Its a sort of local joke on this site. Its stands for Tobacco Acquisition Disorder.

V

Almost 2 years for me, I got a big start though, I have spent a lot of money on snuff to try to get a good sampling

J

TAD is not limited to this site and is common on many other tobacco forums.

F

Off and on since May, 2009…regularly since December 2010 for me. Happy anniversary and may you have many more to come!

S

Does anyone know who first came up with the ‘TAD’ thing, and when?

B

nope it’s that kind of thing that probably untraceable. And probably goes back further then anyone thinks.

T

Re: TAD, I remember seeing it used as far back as the late 90s on the usenet news group alt.smokers.pipes.
