I recently transferred some old snuff from quart mason jars to half pint jars. This stuff was pretty old - several years. Some of it had a musty smell to it. No mold, just a musty smell. Any ideas on what’s up? Is this snuff still useable?

no clue. Though that sounds gross even if not bad for you.

sounds bad actually.

My oldest snuff is now 7 years old, but this has not happened to me before. So far all of them have retained their original flavours and moisture. I keep them in clip top Kilner jars, filled to the maximum.

It might be anaerobic bacteria. If that were the case, it may or may not be harmless.

I could buy the bacteria theory but it occurred in several different jars.

Did you try to air them out a bit, just to see if it’s a deep fermentation smell?
What kinds of snuffs are these, natural or scented?

@tobaccobob I agree with this guy, air it out a bit first. What brand/flavor was the snuff?
