Musty Smell

Hi all, I have a few containers (tapboxes) of Mac Craig Royal snuff from Poschl. The thing is, they all seem to have taken on a fairly strong musty smell. I don’t see any discolouration and the seal on the containers is essentially airtight as submerging underwater causes no leakage into the box. They are all about the original moisture and only a few weeks old. Does anybody have an idea of what caused this? Is it mold? Any way to fix it?

I’ve not had the pleasure of MacCraig. Is it moist? If so it may be tne natural ammonia aromas of the tobacco. If its not discolored it cant be mold. Id think maybe decant it, air it out a bit. Other then that snuff it.

It is slightly moist, but the smell isn’t ammonia, it’s something else and it wasn’t originally present. I tried airing it out a bit but I don’t think it worked. It’s a fairly unpleasant smell, so I might just really dry it out and see if it goes away. Good to know it’s likely not mold though. That being said, up until this point I was very pleased with this snuff. Good menthol, light tobacco, and honey flavour.

MacCraigs is a menthol snuff by Poschl. I would open up the tap box and look at it. It should be the same color throughout. Like saucy jack had mentioned. The royal should be low moist and fluffy. Poschl oils their snuffs and helps them from drying out. It could be the oil in that batch had turned; I am only speculating. I had a tap box of Poschl Gletscherprise that developed a musty odor but it was 10 yrs old, long forgotten found in a drawer. I would send Poschl an email detailing your discovery . It may be a quality control issue.

Yep, it is low moist and fluffy and I did open them up. It could be the oils, I’ll write them.

Yeah that sounds like it, @basement_shaman

You know what, I think it is actually the ammonia or something similar because toque has the same smell. I guess snuff ammonia smells different than snus, which is what I was comparing it to.
