De Kralingse molens Musino Tabak After twenty minutes, this delightful scent still strongly lingers. It’s driving me nuts. It’s really delicious, but I can’t put my finger on any one dominant aroma. The description includes cinnamon, angelica root, , orange peel, permbuco and a couple herbs I’ve never heard of. But no scent, not even the cinnamon is overwhelming. This is a snuff that evokes scent memories for me. This is a snuff that takes me back to my grandparents’ house for an American Thanksgiving when I was five years old. The smell of my grandmother’s baking from the kitchen at the other end of the house mixed with the aromas of my grandpa’s den, the humidor full of sweet Cavendish pipe tobacco, a box of White Owls on a cluttered desk , a subtle scent of fresh pipe smoke on the autumn breeze blowing through the window and into the room, and the scent of his well-worn wool coat hanging on a rack just outside the door. While I am quite certain that this deja vu is not what the creator of this snuff had in mind, it works for me. Smiling. While YOWV (Your Olfaction Will Vary), I think this is my favorite snuff so far, for the olfactory memories if nothing more. Medium moist, coarse grind, easy to snuff in generous pinches. On Molens’ containers: I initially disliked them, as the snuff dispenses a bit slowly for my tastes, and I prefer to pinch when I can. This morning I took a good second look at the dispenser in wich my 12.5 grams of Musino Tabak is sheltered. The design is downright elegant. The small grate across the dispenser opening breaks up clumps, providing a uniform consistency. The box is a bit too bulky to discreetly fit into a pocket, but the flip-top is smoothly worked into the design. And the labels, which appear to have been made on an inkjet printer in someone’s home office are nonetheless charming. And why not simple labels? I read somewhere that Jaap Bes and his crew mill and mix some of Europe’s most unique and flavorful snuffs mostly, for love, and many workers are volunteers. I don’t know if this is true, but on a morning which looks to be of the best kind of autumn mornings, this love of snuff and of craftsmanship, of communal effort and Dutch uniqueness, makes my heart sing. But I digress. The delicious scent of this snuff still lingers. Going on a half hour now. Lovely. Lovely. Lovely.
