Mr. Snuff plastic snuff boxes

J

They are on Mr. Snuff. I picked up 2 of them last order. These are very nice. Heavy plastic and they have a little hole on the side that can be opened to pour snuff out. Right now, they are on sale for $5.95. They are awesome. 6 bucks is probably the cheapest snuff box that I have ever seen. I will probably buy more very soon.

A

I bought two more as soon as the first arrived, very good value.

A

In shape and design, identical and from the same mould I would say. The beige coloured ones are made from a plastic that is slightly lighter in weight. The Bernard ones are that black industrial type plastic that rubbish bins are made of.

In use there is no practical difference, but I find the Bernard one has a nicer, more robust feel to it. In normal use it would take decades to wear either one out and unless they were seriously misused they would never fail. Without doubt the best snuffboxes, penny for penny, on the market.

I have not tried any of the brightly coloured ones.

T

They are nice snuffboxes, and can’t be beat for the money, but I do wish they were a bit smaller.

H

Would a smaller box = smaller price?

H

I agree, they are already dirt cheap in price, but so am I so I had to ask, lol.

A

Definitely half the size and in plain black (making them approx the same size as Pat Collins boxes); they could be a standard for years to come like that, like the papier mache boxes of old.

A

Lol, I’m up very late, way past me bedtime.

If you had a logo on the boxes go for embossed, the first thing I did with my Bernard box was remove the sticky label that just made it look tatty, without they are very sleek. Personally I have to say they would look best blank.

A

and now I’m off to bed:)

S

I agree with Snuffster, something the size of a Pat Collins box would be marvelous. As they are, they’re a decent size, but I think something smaller would be better and would be a nicer fit in the pocket etc.

B

I really like them as is. A bit deeper would be preferred, since my fat fingers seem to cause a bit of spillage. I definitely plan to buy more whether the size changes or not.

S

Some of the French Flip top snuff boxes are about the right size. 2.5 x 1.5  with .5" minimum usable depth

A

The very best of snuff box designs, the flip top. Probably a tricky set-up of tools and high skill operators are needed to make one, hence the only ones available these days having sliding lids, it’s about time  some master snuff box maker like PC took the genre onwards.

E

I found the Bernards boxes too big to be of much use, so I’d go for the smaller version too.

J

Dude I love the plastic boxes just the way they are. I can’t think of a thing that can improve them. I love this neon green one that I have.

S

I think the multi-colored boxes are around 2.36 inches by 1.18 inches x .4 inches. (6cm X 3 cm x 1 cm) I had asked jazzi_mike the dimensions a while back and he was kind enough to provide them.

The brown box one that was on the site was huge.

S

Wait, the colored boxes are a different size than the plain tan one?

S

I really would like to see dimensions included in the description for any snuff box listed on the site. After buying hte tan one I was hesitant to buy any of the others.

S

Do the Mr.Snuff Plastic boxes snap closed?

A

No, but they close snugly - they wouldn’t open in a pocket.

B

Smaller? make then the exact size as a Zippo lighter. Then I can carry them in the leather holster on my belt 2.25 inch long 1.5 inch wide 0.5 inch thick .I have a sterling silver flip top 2.25 x1.25 x 0.5 and my fat fingers fit fine, The lid is 1.75 inch long x 7/8 inch wide.I have two of the Barnard’s I keep bait in one and tackle in the other while fishing; They were not air tight and didn’t like my snuff drying out quickly! Besides who needs to carry 25 grams of snuff around ?Also you can delete the tap out hole if it’s a flip top. Less moving parts less to go wrong.

S

I think the colored boxes may be a good size. Perhaps a little deeper for us big fingered fellows…

I need to order one and see I guess

A

The perfect snuff box should hold 10g  - that’s enough for anyone with a serious habit to carry around with them, small enough to be neat and tactile, ok for the stubby fingered.

K

I have metal , wood and plastic snuff boxs the Mrsnuff plastic is the only one I keep on my person 24/7 . The current size 1 3/4  x 3 x 9/16 is vary nice . another size I would buy  1 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 9/16 just a silly 1/2" shorter but I could stuff one more in my pocket . Or a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 9/16 for when im in the tavern and need to share. Or I would buy a 2 1/2" dia. round chrome plastic because it would just look good and be more airtight than any of my other hinged metal boxs … But I’m sure it can’t be done !

S

B would get my vote.

S

B for me as well.

J

B gets my vote too.

K

I would buy   B  .

A

whatever the smallest

D

I have a 1.5" x 1.5" x. 0.5" that is my absolute favorite.  It’s a slide top wood box, and being square, I can really get my fingers inside.  It’s also not as thick as the other square wood ones I have, which makes it so much less bulky to take with me.

S

The Ari. D Norman silver box I have is 2.5 x 1.25 x .5 usable depth. Kind of a cross between the two options.

E

Just measured the nicely sized papier mache box which tends to live on my computer desk - 2.5" x 1.5" x 0.75" deep. I guess that puts me in the “B” group.

A

Those old papier mache boxes were perfect. I would love to find one in pristine condition. As McCausland quotes ‘A silver snuff and I parted company years ago, my standard box is papier mache, plain black’ (from memory but I think I got it)

E

That one of mine isn’t perfect, but it very nearly snuff proof and does keep the snuff nice and fresh. Here’s a picture of it.

E

Thinking of cheap and effective snuff boxes, this one cost me just 99p (plus P&P) on eBay.

It’s 65mm (2.5") in diameter and about 22mm (3/4") deep with a curved underside. The lid is push fit, but a very good fit, making it snuff proof and very good at keeping snuff fresh for days. It’s comfortable in the pocket too. Now if someone fancied reproducing these I am quite sure there would be a market for them.

C

Very nice Tony!

I’ve always dreamed of something like this.  I would love a tin like that, or one that said something along the lines of : Exquisite Snuff, Exquisite Tobacco or the like.

E

I’m sure it was a really cheap item in its day, and no doubt a promotional thing for J&H Wilson’s. Cheap or not, it’s immensely practical and effective. I guess a reproduction could have any wording on the lid.

C

I know that this could be done with a punch set, not sure how nice it would look.

E

A for me–I like them smaller

C

I tried to make a tin like @ermtony posted a picture of.  I used a steel punch set… horrible fail.  The tin nearly collapsed even when I placed support under it.

I have another one, I might try to etch it chemically.  We shall see.

E

I’d better take some pics with the lid off etc. Might make it clearer.

B

My 2 cents.  I’ve got one of the Mr Snuff plastic boxes and I do like the design.  Nice sturdy feel and thoughtful hinged lid and I really like the design of the tap hole and sliding panel covering the hole. I like to carry around more than one kind of snuff to try during the day, so I would like a smaller box though.  Keep the depth the same, but make it a 1"x1" square and I’d really go for that.

S

@mr.snuff I think that sounds right perfect, so you’re thinking the 2x1.5 rather than 2.5x1.5?

S

That would be a good size. The depth would help keep down spillage on the sides from pinching. The volume would be a bit more than the Ari D Norman

J

I have been trialling the coloured boxes from Mr Snuff…

  1. They are a good size, take 10gm perfectly - thus I can decant a full 10gm box of snuff - and are relatively thin so slip into pocket well.

  2. The hinge is excellent, tight enough to not flop open, loose enough to open easily.

  3. The slide end (I like to tap snuff onto back of hand - keeps my fingers clean) works really well.

  4. Colours - I bought two green ones - which I really like - I am sure the other colours are good and great if you want to carry a few snuffs and need to distinguish them.

  5. Nice and robust - dropped them lots of times - no sign of wear or tear.

  6. price - really good - excellent value for money

  7. I’d say these boxes are near perfect - a much better (for me anyway) than the rather large Bernards boxes, though otherwise very similar

  8. I guess a smaller version (with hinge and slide end - essential) would be nice - just a bit shorter on long side would be fine - otherwise proportions perfect

  9. Logo on top - don’t mind - embossed is better than a label (which on Bernards box immediately started to come off - but left nasty sticky film) - I’d prefer it say something like ‘Snuff Box’ or ‘Take a sniff’ or something generic or amusing if it must - but certainly not a deal breaker.

All in all a perfect snuff box - I will be buying more in other colours and to ‘put away’ just in case for any reason they became unavailable - Mr Snuff - thank you for having these!

K

Ok so the new one will be 2x1 3/4 x 9/16 fine ( I would have preferred 2 1/4 ) It’s good to be the king. Now lets talk about the plastic color . I need one

antique tortise shell , A couple mother of pearl . and one that old bakelite color from the 20s or 30s . one chrome and one kind of like a marble or granet. Color of your choice.!. Thanks David

A

Bakelite brown would be very cool, as would a smaller one in the black plastic, which would look like a papier mache snuff box.

U

@Mr.Snuff As with the American snuffs, are you able to ship these plastic snuff boxes from within the US (to a US address)? Here here to the bakelite.

S

I’ve received on the of the current ones offered. I like it much better than the tan one that had been listed. This is a very good snuff box and like @jonathan I will be ordering more. I can’t add anything to his review other than I like how the sides are straight rather than curved. It makes it easier to get those last few pinches of snuff.

@Mr.snuff thanks for getting the dimensions listed!

I look forward to seeing the new ones.

Here is a pic showing size comparisons of some assorted snuff boxes.

B

2.25X1.5X.75  would be great the extra .25 gives plenty of room for fat pinches. flip top would be alright without the slide tap out or if it don’t matter for set up fee throw the slide on

S

Looking forward to getting one of these smaller boxes when they become available. The tan one I have is great, but is too big for practical every day use.

T

I picked up some porcelain looking snap top boxes that are a little big but really nice looking at the dollar tree for a buck each. Ones a horse and the opening is just wide enough for my fingers and the others an egg that I put a few pinches of abraxas in. If you have a gigantic winter coat like I do the horse is perfect. Otherwise there just good for around the house and looking fancy.

T

And my vote would go to b as well

S

Any movement on these smaller boxes, @mr.snuff?

S

@Mr.Snuff, great news! Function over form is always the best way to go. Looking forward to getting my hands on a couple of boxes. Did you decide to get your name put on them?

W

I ordered one of the bigger tan boxes when they were first available, and must say they are bloody good boxes, ok they hold a lot which can be a double edged sword, but it has become one of my favourite boxes.

Stefan

E

Just received a couple of the originals in the post this morning. I must say I am impressed and size-wise, given the amount of snuff I use, the size is right.

Question for @mr.snuff though - will the other colours be available again? I tend to use certain boxes for certain types of snuff and it would be good to get hold of some of the other colours. Black and tan spring to mind.

J

Oh wow - cute! Don’t mind logo - although my coloured boxes show ‘snuff grime’ around the embossed logo - but don’t mind - can we have coloured boxes? How soon?

S

Those look fantastic! I’d say no logo.

M

see you in about a month; logo or not

S

It looks great!

I’ll buy some with our without the logo.

B

logo go for it. Helps us tell people where we got our snuff.

C

I’d say a mix of both.  Boxes look great!

C

Bottom works for me.

N

Can’t wait for this to be available.  I don’t go through a lot of one snuff in one day and from the pictures it looks like these would be the perfect size.  I’d like to see a logo on it as well.  Bottom or top, I will be buying one or two myself either way.

J

Definitely put a logo on - if it were me it would go on top, but top or bottom you should get the full benefit - the logo (assuming it’s not horrible) won’t stop people buying - because judging by the bigger ones of which I have a number - they will be excellent - I will be buying at least 4 immediately. Great price, great fitting lid, nice and airtight, range of colours allow you to put different snuff in each one and know which is which, very robust - don’t break when you drop them, feel nice in your hand and pocket - best boxes I have got (and alas I have a lot) - never not in my hand or pocket

S

@mr.snuff Those are some wonderful looking snuff boxes! Just what I’ve been looking for! Am I seeing correctly that they have a dosing hole on the side?

J

Dosing hole is what makes these boxes really really great!

X

@Jonathan Logos in general stop me from buying (clothing, etc). I prefer not to use my body to advertise for anyone.

S

I will buy far to many of these beauties!

J

@Xander - totally understand your issue regarding advertising - I also don’t as a habit buy clothing with ‘advertising’ - but labels are useful to prove provenance - gold and silver marks, tailors labels -  and if Mr Snuff is concerned about design rights etc then it makes sense for him. Obviously it makes sense for him to do it subtly so he doesn’t put too many people off.

I guess it could even go on the inside - say under the lid.

But speaking personally, unless it was horrible it wouldn’t put me off because the boxes are so good.

T

Now you own the place why not go with the snuffhouse S.

X

That compromise suits me as well. I would like a Snuffhouse snuffbox.

H

Ditto.Snuff House snuffbox sounds really cool.

K

Mr.Snuff is a good looking logo !  Plus they would look good next to my Mr.Snuff wood boxes

T

I am glad you like the idea.

J

Those look excellent - yet another excuse to shop at mr. snuff… As to logo - I really don’t mind!

J

I was wondering, since I am new and all. Where is Mr Snuff located? US or UK?

As for the boxes: I am going to say that without a logo they look a bit plain.

M

However you do them I’m sure I’ll buy 3 or 5. Maybe more!

B

Logo ? paper label ? makes no difference; I will peel the label off and tape my own contents label on.

X

I think we are talking about an embossed logo.

K

Logo - David , Clear to altitude !

A

Wow, I loved this box…looks great with dosing hole, since I tend to use it spilling some on my left hand and then picking up with right hand - index and thumb fingers - to snuff.

Definitely gonna but some! (if you ship to the third world)

A

Just ordered one to go with a bulk can of grunt, they look great.

E

I just bought a couple of these. Looking forward to receiving them and the nice new snuffs to fill them with. How long do they tend to keep snuff fresh for before they dry out? My wooden box is great but will only really hold the moisture for about a day. I don’t get through a huge amount while at work so only really put in a gramme or so each day

S

The new smaller ones aren’t out yet are they?

The ones currently listed work well though.

V

I like to try out all the accessories available for snuff so I’ll be sure to try the plastic boxes.

P

What about every company’s logo with a “made exclusively for Mr. Snuff” at the bottom? That way maybe the company provides you money for part of the process (wishful thinking?) and we could put our Samuel Gawith snuffs in a box with a Samuel Gawith logo, not a Bernard’s logo.
My avatar is of my favorite snuffbox, I’m assuming it’s the same as yours and Bernard’s, but only with a picture of Mt. Everest. I love the box to death, just wished I had ones with all the snuff maker’s logos, not all the mountains.

B

LOGO’S I will have mine on a cap, hoodie ,sweat shirt ,mug ,tee shirt , boxer shorts And handkerchief .You can find me at www.snuffhouse.org.

E

Nice! I will certainly be ordering a couple as soon as they appear.

S

Very Cool! I like the Snuffhouse branding.

S

Looking good! I’ll be getting a couple, too.

C

Now that is nice!

W

Put me down for a couple as well.

Stefan

H

Snuffhouse logo and address?!

H

I didn’t think you confirmed whether or not you were going to actually do it though, not in this thread anyway. Either way, woohoo!

J

Fantastic! Can’t wait to get my hands on a couple. (remarked the Bishop…)

J

@mr.snuff , Well done. Your tireless efforts to improve the lives of the snuffers of the world should be rewarded handsomely.

B

I hope they still exsist when I make my next order.

M

ditto

T

@mr.snuff you really did like my idea. does this mean I get a freebie.

X

I’m with Fry. Order to be placed ASAP. Edit: I need the dark green one. Its been our unofficial color since the beginning. Yeah we’re bright green in some places these days, but only because the days are brighter now.

S

Gotta catch 'em all!

B

Just acquired it’s big brother; and he is tight. If these are from the same manufacturer then I will be over joyed.

B

I hope they still exsist when I make my next order.

I second this post. I think one of each. Or maybe two. Decisions decisions.

S

The new ones are in stock now.

I have 3 on the way. Along with more Grunt and some Viking Blonde

M

cool stuff!

J

Fantastic! Two on order and a pot-luck 25g to avoid the postage penalty.

H

So how much would it cost in shipping to order just one of those boxes to the US? Edit: nevermind…it would cost $15 to order a single box to the US total, including the snuffbox itself…guess I’ll have to wait and go mope in the corner.

K

@Mrsnuff:  Butt  David  Buddy  where  are  the  chrome silver  units  ?   I’m  thinking  of  having  one  of  the  larger  units  chrome  plated . $22.00  at  Show Car Chrome  in  Bremerton .  They  sure  would  look  good  and  no  one  would  be  able  to  tell  they  weren’t  real  silver !

S

Just ordered a couple. Looking forward to getting my hands on them!

B

Snatched one up

S

Boxes arrived this morning. Utterly chuffed with them. Cheers Dave!

E

Mine arrived this morning as well. Truly excellent boxes. Snuff proof, sturdy and compact and yet still hold a decent amount of snuff.

L

I have just had a delivery of a blue one. Excellent, really good. I like the fact that there is a slide for when you want to “tap” as well as take a pinch. The lid fits nice and tight. Its great value for money.

T

I have ordered two.

J

My two arrived in the post yesterday, and they are excellent. Great job, Dave!

T

Mine arrived today. They are perfect. Top marks Dave.

S

Got one in the mail yesterday and so far I’m very happy with it. It was a nice surprise to discover the tap hole on the side. Feels really good in the pocket, as well. I think I will have to order more.

S

MIne arrived in the mail today, just in time to be loaded up for work! Verdict, nice solid boxes, a good value for the money; I have a slight concern about the tap mechanism clogging up with finer snuffs, but at first glace they’re pretty slick!

E

If you get any clogging around the dispenser just tap the box a couple of times on a solid surface. That seems to clear it fast enough.

B

seems awesome so far. Great tap with the tapered hole great touch. The tap works perfectily for me.

K

I bought one, it does the job very well, as has been said. I just find it a bit ugly. My problem. These are very solid and built for purpose.

W

When will the boxes be available on Ebay? I want to buy a few of the Snuffhouse Snuff Box Mahogany Brown or the Mr.Snuff Black Plastic Snuff Box .

A

Just got the snuffhouse one, excellent size for a pocket box. I think on balance the other ones are slightly better (rococo) the plastic is denser and just has a more pleasant feel. These also pop open if you put too much snuff in, but that is being highly picky, all in all the price makes them unbeatable. Why do you want to get them off ebay?

T

Got the ochre orange in my next order. Should go nicely with its blue big brother.

S

J Why do you want to get them off ebay?

Cheaper shipping in the USA. That said I ordered mine when I was picking up some more snuff.

A

@Slide - thanks, I’m not an ebay user. Just a little tip: when I got mine yesterday I found that the lid would keep slowly opening itself. I thought it was because I had overfilled but it did it even with a half fill. Closer inspection and 2 minutes thought and I realised that it was because of the lack of friction because the box is made of shiny plastic - so a light roughing up of the connecting surfaces with the file on my swiss army solved it.

X

I’m waiting for ebay as well, I’ve been searchng and not finding. @Mr.snuff can you post your ebay shop link?

X

Also i’m seeing non-tobacco snuffs being blocked by ebay by a bizarre message: Unfortunately, access to this particular listing or item has been blocked due to a Paris commercial court decision that bans trade of certain authentic perfumes and cosmetic products on eBay because of French selective distribution laws. eBay is appealing this ruling but is nevertheless required to enforce it. We are blocking your viewing in an effort to comply with this court decision. Regrettably, in some cases, we may prevent users from accessing items that are not within the scope of the decision because of limitations on existing technology.

B

August 13 got this reply about the plastic snuff boxes [Hi there, I just wanted to let you know that we have shipped several different styles off boxes here to the US. Kind Regards, Andrea - mrsnuffcom] Still patiently awaiting ???

M

I thought I would revive this thread to give any relative newcomers a bit of background. I am really excited that we have managed to revive the Snuffhouse snuffboxes, designed by consensus amongst Snuffhouse members. As you can see from the ad box on the left we are giving these away for free. All we ask is you buy 5 or more items.

T

Are these on the site yet? I can only see the ejector type snuffbox not being sold out?
