Noticed this the other day on their website. Anyone have any experience with these? They look pretty cheap and are at $5.99 a piece but if they are “air tight” I think I might get a few of these. Anyone buy one and use em yet?
Do you have a link to these? When I click on the category for “plastic snuffboxes” I just see the smash boxes (which are definitely not $5.99). Edit: http://mrsnuff.com/store/bernard-plastic-snuff-p-1486.html
I’m intrigued by the Bernards box. I always wanted to grab one of those Gletscher boxes but never could get one.
$5.99 is a little much for something that is possibly total crap.
I haven’t actually seen one yet, and I must admit I baulked at getting them in stock for ages because of the price. Then I special ordered 40 odd of each for a client so I figured I would try some. I find it hard to fathom that Bernards would sell a crappy product designed to hold their snuff, with their logo on it. I suspect they will be pretty decent for the price, but I could be wrong. Has anybody seen one of these in real life yet? Dave
Another thought: when I first saw these they reminded me of the Poschl Robby Top Mint boxes (remember those…with the walrus on it?). If they are the same quality, then you can’t go wrong. My Robby box was refilled many times till I lost it. http://ermtony.pbworks.com/f/robbies%20snuff\_200x100.jpg Dave
I still have two of those:)
I had one of the plastic traditional snuff boxes once and it was excellent, cheap and cheerful. Im sending off for one today as it happens.
Snuffster… could you give us a review after you use it for a week or so? I’m very interested in this since funds are tight and I dont have a snuff box yet.
I now have a report in on these boxes: “Hi David, tried it with Dr Rumneys and Super Chetak, gave it a good shake lid side down over a sheet of white paper and no leakage.” @ermtony…they’ll be antiques on eBay before long Dave
I have a rubbish, agh, I mean Robby’s box in my hand right now. This is one of the most usefull snuff containers ever made, wish I had another 20 of them.
I remember seeing robby on sale at snuffstore a while ago, I knew i should’ve ordered it…
Any thoughts on the Gletscher sling shot box? I’ve seen a review but it was vague. I’ve been reusing the same Packard’s boxes for over 3 years now and they still don’t leak and work fine.
I can give you a review now because its identical to the one I lost some time ago. Basically, the box is in the shape of a classic flip top wooden box but made of a light brown plastic. The hinge is formed from the lid and the body of the box and holds about the same as a WoS wooden box, maybe 15g?. You can’t go wrong at this price. The last one I had didn’t leak and as they are moulded plastic I would expect them all to be identical, give or take the odd thou. Ill post if its any different but this must be the deal anywhere at the moment.
So the dispenser version is the same only with the dose hole and the Alpina type slide cover?
No, they are two different products, Ive only used the snuffbox.
It arrived today, every bit as good as I remember. 100% leak free, holds a good amount and is in the classic hinged lid snuff box shape. These are like a modern equivalent of the old papier mache boxes that many of the old time snuffers swore by; utilitarian, cheap but excellent. These are little gems and fantastic value. Buy one, no - buy two.
Could you take some pictures of it please, @snuffster?
I’m going to assume the dispenser is simply a modified version of the plastic box with a dispensing hole. I got bored and started fiddling around with some concepts based on the idea. I made a prototype from a plastic container but I believe metal snuff tins will work just as well. Poor Man’s Tapout Container: This one takes about 5 minutes to make. It requires a scavenged tap out box with a rubber stopper and a used plastic snus/dip can. For you military guys stuck in the field, a standard issue rubber noise suppressor for the ears works if you can’t find a stopper. The rest requires only a knife or something to bore a hole with and some tape.
Not pretty but you get the idea. I didn’t get around to the second prototype but it involves a snuff tin and a small set of hinges commonly found on broken eyeglass fames, jewelry box lids, cigar boxes, craft stores, etc… The hinge must be attached to the stopper near its base. Otherwise, the thin strip of rubber which forms the original hinge between the stopper and a small anchor piece will not last long before it wears apart. Just cut off the small tail section attached to the stopper if it hasn’t worn off already.
I know these are silly but I’m toying with the general concept. Personally, I’d rather spend a few bucks on the cool Bernard’s box. Maybe I just watched too much ZOOM as a kid.
There you go, just the standard snuff box type. The other one is on the same principle as the one you made, but rectangular with a Bernard logo on it. Both of them are on the Bernards website as well.
